Aaaahhhh......brings back such good memories. A beautiful place. Caught some of the biggest spotted grunter in my life there, and plenty. Below the lighthouse at the point I saw a chap get stuck into a huge Barracuda....from the rocks using a surface plug. Just below the then Cape Hermes hotel we caught giant cob at night in the river. Using big Rapallas. Then there is the spot called "the gap." For big sharks and cracker. But you have to have your wits about you. You go down the side of a high area almost straight down at a very acute angle to the rocks below. Plenty smash - ups there, even on heavy tackle. Good times!!
That trip I had a Shimano slx 7ft medium light which I've now sold since it's extra fast action was too much. I usually use a fast action. The reel was a Shimano vanford 4000 with 35lb braid but I usually use a 3000 with 25lb braid. Thin black velvet or whiplash so all 300m fits.
Hi Gregg. What lures were you guys using to catch the Kob with? I do quite a bit of estuary fishing in the southern cape and have never had much luck when trolling. Would like to give these lures a bash
