update seven years later....they are now $299. there are many similar ones on the market at the same price. don't know if the quality various. .... i doubt it. BTW, about the BTUs.... there are two BTU metrics out there now. at one time in the past, life was simple and there was only one. and it was simply called a BTU (British Thermal Unit). but now we have two: the old BTU, sometimes referred to as a "BTU DOW SACC" and the newer metric referred to as ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) which is a BTU per hour metric. usually, the ASHRAE rating is higher than the BTU rating. the 5000 BTU or 8000 ASHRAE unit i bought will satisfactorily cool the cabin on my 38'' sailboat in 100F temps. and yes, they are as easy to install and operate as demonstrated here, and amperage required is little enough such that i can run my 110v mini-fridge along with the AC and not blow a fuse. whether i can use my coffee maker and my toaster too RTBS (Remains To Be Seen).

How well does it cool the boat on a really hot day, outside your covered slip? It has been my experience using the single hose on the boat that it cools it down, but pulls so much cool air out, that it really never gets cold,. That thing is not really pulling 15 amps is it? Check the specs on that one, should be more like 8.5. I have been using a portable ac in my 27 for a few years with decent results, but just not like the old window unit I used. The problem is, it's like running your car ac on the outside air setting instead of recirculate. If you rig up a separate hose for it to pull in the condenser cooling air instead of robbing the cooled air, then you will greatly increase the cooling. Or get a dual hose model, but those really do use more like 12 amps.
masdbo it will not keep up with the beating Sun. it will cool it while in the shade of my slip or at night on anchor but the temp in the cabin will reach about 80 when out it the Sun on a really hot day.
Yeah same problem I faced, fine at night kinda air in the daytime. How is the drain situation? Accumulating a lot of water? I ran mine into my fresh water tank..... it's a water maker! I don't drink it anyway, just for washing, etc.
thank you. I must say the addition of this a/c unit made spending the night on my boat much more pleasurable. it was kind of miserable in the hot sticky southern summer nights.

One of the big problems with these is the cheap uninsulated hose. If you will wrap the hot exhaust hose with insulation, you will cool easier and faster in a house or boat!
Correct, most home improvement stores have wrap around insulation with a foil exterior that is easy to put on and keeps the hose from radiating out heat.
He should be venting in outside air directly into the condenser which will get hot and then exhaust out. It works ok like he has it but he's sucking in hot outside air to replace what is going out of the exhaust.

For every bit of hot exhaust air from the condenser going out will draw in the same amount fresh air from outside. It's like running you home AC with the door open. He should duct in some outside air directly into the condenser.
