In this video, we'll look at setting up the PortableApps.com platform on a USB stick. This will allow you to carry some of your favourite (free) software wherever you go and use it on almost any computer at your disposal.

Well, I did it. I had to go get a USB 3.0 thumb drive, but I got it all loaded on the drive and followed your instructions. Now I'm going to plug it back in to see if Inkscape works as well as I hope it will. Thank you.

This is amazing!! Thank for the video sir! If I use this at work will IT people be able to tell what apps I'm using on my work computer? Or will they see only network traffic and a USB stick plugged into the computer?

Happy to help. PortableApps won't leave any personal data behind, but there will still be traces of apps that have run in the Windows operating system. I wouldn't advise doing anything that contravenes work policies.

Would it be more efficient to do it on your faster hard drive first then just transfer your folder to a USB once you’ve built up your initial baseline?

Thank you very much for this lovely in depth tutorial for using portable apps. I have been pulling my hair out trying to find information. I have a mac computer, with windows 7 installed through Bootcamp 4.0. Bootcamp came free on the Mac it's an OS-10.something, specifically to install windows. But it still worries me because many of the keyboard shortcuts are missing, even though it's supposed to emulate the windows shortcuts. So it gives me pause to put programs directly on the hard drive. I tried Gimp twice. I haven't tried Inkscape yet which is one of the ones I want to have. I'm familiar with CorelDraw 9 and I also have CorelDrawX5 and 2020 which I haven't been able to use because they will not run on this computer at all! Not even my CorelDraw 9 will work. I miss using it. Microsoft Word works but it's limited. Someone loaded this on for me so I don't know how to tweak it to work right, besides I've lost some of my risk-taking ability. I'm 60 now so I've learned to be a little over cautious, especially since I don't have access to computer people who can get me out of a jam if I get myself into one.

You're welcome. I'm glad it helped. It's possible some of the problems on your Mac are connected to the older version of Bootcamp and Windows 7. You're probably aware that support for Windows 7 has now ended. It looks as though you'd need Bootcamp 6 in order to run Windows 10. The good news is that lots of open source software is cross platform and has a Mac version - this is certainly the case with both GIMP and Inkscape, which can be downloaded from the following websites: www.gimp.org/downloads/ inkscape.org/release/ Thanks for your feedback.

@@bytemypi2918 Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. It's refreshing to know I'm heard. I will look into upgrading a little further, I'm a little set in my ways so it's a bit scary. Again, thank you.

@@bytemypi2918 By the way I am listening to your VM tutorial; is Bootcamp a type of virtual machine?

@@evvie01 No problem. Hope it goes well.

My understanding is that Bootcamp is a utility that allows you to set up booting multiple operating systems on a Mac. Each OS runs independently. So in answer to your question; no, it's not a virtual machine. A VM runs inside your main operating system. Hope that makes sense.

I don't know how to share my first picture with you but I'm putting it on my facebook. It's a bowel of flowers with a thank you. I don't know if you can follow where people share your videos but if you can you'll find it there.

@@bytemypi2918 You're welcome. I don't blame you I get frustrated too with all the snooping and surprises, but my family lives there and so far the best they can do is annoy me.
