This song will play at the E3 reveal of the Orange Box 2.0 that comes with Left 4 Dead 3, Half Life 3, and Portal 3..... We can dream can't we?

Ahhhh.listening to opera kinda makes me happy.Once,my friend fell down somewhere in portal 2,and there was this glitch where this played,and he died from...fall damage?

The female turret is GLaDOS singing to Chell, who is her Daughter. The King Turret is maybe Cave Johnson signing along...

In order to decrease this, I had to clean it and strip it a bit (the muffling) and lower the volume significantly. I do hope that Valve ultimately releases a version of the song with just the song. It'd be a dream to have the original, but anything without the sounds (like the elevator, etc) would be great. If that happens, I'll certainly upload a new version. Thank you for your thoughtful critique!

*Spoiler!!* Chell lives, it's implied by the end lyrics "You've got your short sad life left." The four turrets that serenade Chell are the four Oracle turrets found throughout the game (in various states of distress). You'll know them by this line "I'm different!" This is actually Latin, Caroline's last gift to her daughter, her dearest daughter. Caroline's last act of kindness, was to free her daughter. Chell always wanted to know who her parents were, so this was also revealed.

You are certainly not the first one! In fact, I've gotten several comments regarding RU-vid tears. Mike Morasky definitely composed an absolutely beautiful piece. I think it's great that you've exposed yourself to some of gaming's greatest artworks, both game play and music, at such a young age. When I was ten, I was playing games like Crusader: No Regret and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? I know, so old! :)

Uh, at the END of the Co-Op DLC, she gains access to an entirely new section that contains hundreds, if not thousands, more (alive) humans. I'll just end this with a quote straight from Wikipedia: "At the conclusion of the co-op story, the robots discover and gain entry to "the Vault", where humans are stored in cryostasis. GLaDOS gleefully congratulates the robots on locating the humans, whom she sees as new test subjects."

@ahbrother Rather ambiguous hehe. All I can say is that the 'beginning' is the original song, completely and utterly unedited, not only for those who enjoy the original version, but to also juxtapose it with the edited. In any case, I still very much enjoy the original recording and don't think it needs any 'work' at all, but it was fun to offer an extended version. If you are referring to something else--perhaps w/ regards to cadence or pitch--I am always open to musical suggestions.

@DFZero235 I actually completely agree on your second point here. I did not want it to be as soft and muffled either. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to edit and use a pre-rendered track with sound effects, modulation and everything already mixed together. Makes things much more difficult. I had to soften it at this part because, were it to be louder, the background of another part of the track (from which I was splicing) would be too audible and ruin the section.

@Anthony883 At 1:30, I did, actually. It was a very minor (and only) loop to juxtapose the original with the edited--which actually comes a bit later. Also, if you'd like to leave some intelligent criticism, I certainly welcome it. 'Ew' is not very informative. And do try to listen to the entire piece (as opposed to stopping before the actual edits, ~four seconds in the next loop) before leaving a comment. Credibility shoots up this way.

@erWithjana Not sure to what you're referring; 2:20 is the original track, its volume unchanged throughout. I did, however, employ dynamics as I believe it can add to any composition. If a part of the track, like the harmony, counterpoint or anything in the background, is *mp* (mezzo-piano) or *p* (piano), it is on purpose. At the end, I also go from *pp* gradually to *f* (forte). The only case I can think of where background overpowers melody is the use of basso-continuo in the Baroque era.

@WoWFREAK1336 You realize that there's only one defined loop, right? The definition of a loop is a section of music repeated continuously and consistently. And that's at the very beginning. I wanted to juxtapose the original with the edited, so of course it'd be obvious. The rest is adding and layering music, providing counterpoints, harmonies, rounds and implementing time stretching and reverbs. Not rudimentary looping. If you want to critique loops, search other extended versions of this song.

It's not, so it's obvious you didn't bother really listening to it enough or at all. If you'd seen the number and complexity of the edits, your eyes would burn. So, you can have your comment, but somehow--just somehow--I'll live without your single Like! How I'll manage, I have no idea.

Anyone with any sort of musical ear can tell there's more than simply the same thing twice here. The second verse has choral rounds, and the outro has harmonics that aren't in the original, followed by awesome aetherial choral work and a tempo change, not to mention how much work you would have had to do with the instrumental track at the same time. And anyone who says they can replicate this in an hour needs their brain worked on, it would take that long to edit the original to studio quality.

No, it's Greek. The titan prometheus stole fire from the gods and was cast down by Zeus, and was given a punishment of eternal torment, with birds (ravens I think) pecking out his liver every day. Plus you have the bot "Atlas" which is another Greek myth reference. Chell and GladOs fell down the shaft, which is a reference to Prometheus being cast down. And then there's the "Aristoteles vs mashy spike plate", while not myth is certainly a reference to Greece. And there's quite a lot more.

Well considering that Gabe Newell is an atheist I doubt this was the intention. The more likely is that after GlaDOS deleted Caroline, Chell was no longer a test subject and the turrets didn't have to shoot at here. Also, GlaDOS expressed good feelings about Chell, so this was a good-bye sorta thing. The Companion Cube was just there for humor. (Or perhaps to carry around and give to Ratman in another game.)

This is an interesting theory, however it also says in Want you gone "Now little Caroline is in here too" implying she really didn't delete Caroline. Also, in the original Portal, as GLaDOS lowers you into the fire pit she says all Aperture Technology can survive up to 4000 degrees Kelvin so yeah. That implies that the Cube is actually, as GLaDOS would say, Still Alive. I just wanted to share a bit of knowledge

I heard another theory, saying that GlaDOS would actually be Chell's mother. Throughout the whole game you learn that Chell is adopted, right? And at some point, when you have GlaDOS as a potato, she becomes less annoying, and more caring for Chell. That might be because Chell's would be the biological daughter of Cave Johnson and Caroline, and thus GlaDOS's daughter (because of Caroline). In the ending opera, if you translate to english, it sing things like "Goodbye my beloved / my child".

Actually, I watched a vid where someone analyzed the ending a while back, specifically GLaDOS and the companion cube and they pointed out that the cube wouldn't actually be destroyed by the incinerator, only scorched, which is why it is returned you covered in scorch marks but otherwise fine. It deals with the temperatures. I would link the video if I knew which one it is, but the temperature in the incinerator just isn't hot enough to destroy testing equipment.

There's a lot of symbolism about the wheat field that suggest that GlaDOS did kill Chell, like in Gladiator. The theory is that after GlaDOS deleted Caroline, the three turrets immediately killed Chell and she drifted out of Aperture to heaven (the wheat). It would explain how the poor deceased Weighted Companion Cube was there, and what the angelic singing was about. I'm not saying I subscribe to this theory, but it's definitely interesting.

Chell died at the end of Portal 2. The turrets shot her and she died instantly without noticing the turrets shooting her, since it happened so fast. According to Greek Mythology. Heaven is a cornfield. As you rise to heaven, you are accompanied by your friend and hear calming music. The turrets break into song. Then you get shoved out of a shed into a field of wheat, accompanied by your only friend, the Companion Cube.

She wanted Chell to go ("It was fun, don't come back"), she has Atlas and P-Body (they are not quite as intelligent but...), some people suggest that she didn't delete Caroline because in the song 'Want you gone' she says "Now little Caroline is in here too", she could kill herself if she wanted, what I doubt since she does everything for Science and if Wheatley can but her in a potato(!) she could easily put herself into a robot like Atlas/P-Body and just use the elevator and look for someone.

A little critique, if I may be so bold. 1. It is impressive. There is no doubt about that. The dynamics used in the second half of the song add a note of sadness and longing for a loved child missing, an altering of the mood before. 2. My only gripe is in the middle of the song where the song decrescendos to pianissimo. Personally, I find the "distortion" or "muffling" used to try to lend a note of distance is a mite overdone. If a future version were to be made, I would suggest it be removed.

And then...there's ME3... *gamer sadness* Valve may take longer to get games out, but when they do, they bloody deliver, which is what I prefer to rushed, incomplete nonsense released as soon as possible. Never forget...

Interesting. However there is also information to suggest that the companion cube wasn't burned - like when Chell is being lowered into the fire pit in the first portal, when GlaDOS says that all aperture equipment is made to survive extremely high heat. Logically, that means the the cube survived. But Chell wouldn't know that so if it was in her head then...

When this started, I just sat back and watched as I contemplated Portal 1 and 2 and all the stuff i went through and it was so in the mood i started crying as it played and when the mancry stopped "Want You Gone" started and it was so damn beautiful. This is one of the most amazing video games and it will stay in my heart forever.

The words in English were the biggest thing that suggest that to me, and it would be fantastic if it weren't for the fact that the lead writer for the game said he didn't know the lyrics of the song in English when the game was released. So, sadly, it's not got anything to do with the story. I wanted this to be really deep, but it isn't. :\

In "This is the part where he k..." GaldOs tells chell the Co-Op initiative was something "she came out to phase out human testing just before she scaped", and she meant before portal 1, it couldn't be between portal 1 and 2, because a) glados is dead b) there is the story that was cover in the rattman comic.

This song reminded me of Dobby from Harry Potter, Mufasa from Lion King... The guy that hit his head on the propeller in titanic... When Darth Vader died... There's something about Ellen McLain's voice that sends varying types of chills through me. She may have called her Italian bad, but I thought that song was one of the most beautiful parts of the game.

Chell didn't leave Aperture Laboratories. When the elevator went up, she was shot as a trap from the first four turrets and it killed her. The rest of what happened is her descending to her happy place, which was freedom. They also say a corn/wheat field is heaven in Greek mythology.

In Greek mythology it states that when you die you hear music and appear in a wheat field with your best friend. Pretty much the companion cube was her best friend and the turrets where shooting not singing. Throughout portal 2 it makes references to Greek mythology

of course she didn't; there's just a theory that says that the game responds too greek mythology beacuse, as this one regards, once dead the ones not going to the underworld would listen calm music and be taken to a wheat field with his/her best friend (Companion Cube).

Yeah - the idea of the fields can be seen as being very similar to that of Elysium (greek heaven) which is where the theory stems from, it seems a bit daft to me that it means she is dead, more likely the notion that for Chell heaven is away from the testing :)

you know turrets may scare the hell out of you but its not their choice to be like that, the turrets may be mean and you must hate them but you know in every bad person there is some good in them why cant in evry bad machine there can be good. Proof? you are hearing it right now

This is more sad when you think about the whole "Chell dieing" theory. Yes, some people theorize that Chell's ride toward the wheat fields was her ascending to heaven, and that the wheat fields themselves were heaven. The turrets really did kill her. BUUUT THAT'S JUST A SILLY THEORY C:

Maybe she did. In Portal 1 Glad0s DID say "Why sould you want to go out THERE? I don't even know what's out THERE anymore." Somehow I think that is, implying something about the Combine. (APPERTURE does exist in the Half Life universe too.)

She's not alone. If you finished the coop mode, you'd see she's got a whole bunch of fantastic test subjects - which, by the way, I'm under the impression implies character customization in Portal 3. If we ever manage to get that far.

ME3 made perfect sense to me. the boy wasnt a god or anything but (i would think) was a powerful AI from many "cycles" ago either made for the actual intention of "saving" the galaxy or made simply to destroy life and if you think about it this makes sense

(I know that comment is old but...) All Aperture equipment can stand up to 4,000 degrees kelvin, which means the companion cube probably wasn't incinerated, so that shouldn't be used to back up that theory.

not to burst your bubble but all other humans or living things were killed by GLaDOS' nerotoxin the only known survivors were Chell and Rat man (supposedly) rat man placed chell in a certain room which ended up saving her life

the opra singer is supposed to be chells mom Caroline who earlier got deleted from gladoses mind or so we all thought the singer is Caroline speaking to chell warning het to walk far away from science

She could return to ascertain who her parents really were, even though everyone else already knows. Its not Chells fault that she is slow. She does have a minor case of serious brain damage, after all.

actually, you can still faintly hear the opera in the background even after Chell reaches the surface, so it would stand to reason that the actual tune is at least a bit longer than the released version

2:46 is the best bit. You can almost see Chell staring up at the stars, wondering about Wheatly, while this playes in the background. As the song gets stronger, she forgives him and hopes he is okay.

Ah, the soprano is just so fantastic *_* If there is something like a choir of angels, please let them be turrets. And if there will be a Portal 3, please let the Turret Opera become famous.

Do you not know the difference between corn and wheat? Also Greeks didn't have a heaven, everyone went to Hades. The wheat field is The Field of Asphodel where most people go.

This... work of art. I can't call it an ending. It is just way too good. It wraps up the story so completely that it will forever be my favorite ending to my favorite game of all time.
