I would say Portal. It's the first and has that creepy feeling. If I could replay it for the first time and slowly learn about what had happened to Aperture, I would.
2. The story and characters offer a whole lot more. Wheatley is amazing and I love learning about the history of Aperture throughout the decades from everyone's favorite lemon-grenade-throwing madman.
The message you talk about at 16:11 is what appeared on the site right after the potato sack ARG had been "solved" but before it swapped to the GLaDOS@Home one, where all the collected potatoes contributed to "rebooting" GLaDOS. I definitely remember seeing that message after completing the potato sack ARG myself. The "I know its arriving later than expected" is because everyone was speculating that solving the ARG would end with Valve releasing Portal 2 immediately/days early, but in the end it only sped up the release time by about 10-15 minutes or something. Either way it was something really cool to be a part of, and very memorable (and as a bonus I now get all of Valve's games free for life on my steam account!)
@@KiraSlith yup, HLA just appeared in my account for free when preloading was available. Also got Artifact (and the early beta) but that was uh… less impressive
While I remember the ARG, I never played around with either of these sites. Really cool that they are archived for posterity since so many ARG sites are lost in time when the company just pulls them offline.
I used to dig quite a lot that website. I managed to backup one of the first flash files from the site for the community. Man it's been YEARS. Even the most complete videos on YT still miss quite a few stuff. KEEP DIGGING. IT'S NOT OVER.
17:20 there's also text on the website, but it's black on a black background. If you select it, you can read: Content on this page requires a newer version of Adobe Flash Player. Also some details i saw on the application form, it sometimes has flashing letters, which would make the sentece: cake is a lie It also flashed a ASCII picture of a cake once for me
I mean recently the creators of Portal have talked about wanting to make a third game and even a movie, they just need to get a team together so there's still hope. Correct me if I'm wrong but most of Valve's games were made for mainly the purpose of trying out new technology. I mean Portal 2 was made for improved graphics, Half-Life: Alyx was made for VR and now we have the Steam Deck so possibly we could get a full-on Portal 3 for the console~
Though we already did get Aperture Desk Job for the Steam Deck, so I wouldn't be surprised if that's all we get (but I am going to hope and wish for something more).
I always thought a good idea for a sequel would involve GLaDoS needing chell to assist her... Like say she gets a virus, and needs chell to do her thing, and kill it. How? By using a special headset to enter her code itself, testing in a NEW environment making use of a different KIND of portal. Thus no worry about nausea or anything. Start in an dilapidated home, where chell does the initial movement/usage tutorial, etc. Ends up attacked by some robots trying to bring her back, she fights them off, etc. Gets a recorded message from her, uses the provided device to end up back.. Turrets are deployed accidentally but they are obviously glitchy, broken speech, erratic movement, etc. Proving to chell that she really DID need her help, not to worry though after Wheatley's occurence she made modifications to make the reactors self sustaining to prevent ANY potential meltdown while chell is in the code. Chell goes in, destroys some errored code, malicious code, etc. Then finds the cause of her glitches... From a source unexpected... INSIDE aperture itself. A person who found themselves in a similar situation as caroline, but in an older body. Lost to time. Cave Johnson who the scientist decided to give him what he wanted... But NOT the facility, leaving him abandoned forever alive in old aperture. This drove him to try to HACK back into control, inadvertently causing the whole Glados murder event, etc. Defeating him in the mainframe results in glados shutting down and rebooting to finalize the changes after chell exits the code in a sleep state. *The mental strain was strong due to it being an experimental gadget* When chell wakes up, she is not greeted by a robot... But a human, a bunch of them. They say hello, tell her SHE is waiting for you in her chamber. You would then enter the room, and find a new robot walking around.. Who would then approach you with a familiar voice saying their thanks and saying how it seems that annoyance actually caused her to want to harm people and not just for science. Her new goal is to actually bring Aperture BACK, humans and robots working in peace to bring about advancements.
Oh wow this brings me back, used to mess around on this site in highschool (literally half my life ago, god I'm old). Love the video, thanks for showing all this!
You are my favorite lore channel! your content and lore breakdowns are amazing, and not jumbled up to confuse me at any point. Your content Helped me overcome my Insomnia and getting through nights that I felt no hope. Keep up the masterpieces!
3:31 Gnome Chompski is Officially part of the Portal Lore!!!!!!!!!!! 4:14 Gnome Chompski is acting like Gman. Always watching the player!! NEW THEORY!!! The "G" in "Gman" stands for "Gnome" man and gnome chompski is in the briefcase of the gman and in half life 3 gman will open the briefcase and reveal that gnome chompski was in it and gman disappears and chompski starts to talk and it will be the best scene in gaming history
@@iamalsoaduckhead I didn’t refuse to elaborate. He never once said “please elaborate on what you mean”. Are you unable to read and comprehend what you’re reading?😂
I have discovered this channel last week and i literally fall in love with your contact Keep doing more ❤ And also please make a video about the potato sack arg i REALLY want to hear it from you
its not lost, if the website is still up we can get an old web browser and access the page again, ill see what i can put together and see if the comunity likes it, maybe if we do more digging we can find out more about it.
@@Skyrionn unfortunately gaming isn’t about developers having a unique dream and the desire to create an amazing new gaming experience, but about big corporates making the most money with the least investment: Online Multiplayer, loot boxes, microtransactions and DLCs. It’s so sad that there was no groundbreaking, focus story based game in a long time.. The last really good thing in my opinion was bioshock infinite. (Of course there are amazing indie games and mods still, but I’m talking about AAA here)
@@Ubreakable-lr2dk half life: Alyx is really amazing, I just love the whole half life/portal lore and alyx also was very good! Unfortunately it was to push their VR sales which are going down rapidly, because somehow PCVR isn’t catching on, even if it’s amazing technology. It’s very sad in my opinion because VR truly is the future and people spend 1000$ on a computer monitor and even more on TVs but think it’s unreasonable for a VR headset to cost that? The experience with VR is so much better and absolutely unique, so the price is definitely acceptable for a high end VR Headset. I don’t know about elden ring, as a traditional rpg player I highly dislike it. Super weird huge weapons. Super weird huge bosses. A world that never looks pretty and always weirdly dark and the story is very bad. Every western rpg is much better than elden ring, maybe Japanese people like this stuff and because manga/anime is all the rage now for kiddies out there they think it’s cool if rpgs are like that. I’m hoping for the elder scrolls 6 as the next big amazing rpg! The Witcher was great, but it also was a bit to much action for my taste. My favorite single player rpgs are still the elder scrolls series and the gothic series. It would be amazing if gothic came back, it was one of the best fantasy rpg franchises!
Man, I remember discovering this back then and working through it. The excitement I got when I saw the login on the second playthrough and went immediately back to the site. I did all the questions and got to the end where it asked for the ID and went and redid it all, screencapping and hand writing down the User ID, not knowing it didn't actually work. It was such a cool thing to discover.
We do technically have a new game with Aperture Desk Job, I have it in my library but I have been so focused playing other games on the deck but I should really see if there is any lore in the game but thought you might take a look first.
I did not know about any of this. One of the many reasons why value knew how to communicate with their fans. Thanks for the video John. Merry Christmas 🎁🎄
Merry Christmas! I'm glad I could introduce something to you that you did not know! I'm hoping one day we will get something similar if Valve ever follow up on Half-Life: Alyx.
this has likely been said already but its likely that the clip from david copperfields tornado of fire was of his magic trick called Portal where he pulled a member of his audience and teleported them to a pre-selected location such as hoover dam, hawaii, or australia
8:44 The 58th cake is "Vanilla Crazy Cake" which may be a reference to a removed GLaDOS voiceline, which is basically an extended version of the intelligence core dialogue. GLaDOS would repeat "Vanilla crazy cake" multiple times before moving on with a bizarre cake recipe.
I dont know if he mentioned it but on the archive website there was a question about light and a prisim I started noticing flashing letters along the test could this mean a new arg
Portal 2 is best but this link just reveal my appetite for more lore I can finally know more of the portal universe and what seems to be Aperture Science
So, something really interesting i found while bored one night, in the modern AS website, if you Google the url, and check images, there's these strange, almost Aztec looking squares, going to the page for that reveals, i believe, 20 of these squares aligned on a grid in a black page, the squares don't do anything, there's nothing else to see as far as I can tell, i made a reddit post almost a year ago but no one had any clue what it could be
Just a tip, custom browsers made for stuff such as old flash games do exist, and could probably be used to view the website in its last form if you ever revisit this!
Can you do a video covering the Black Mesa Pizza ARG? Its hard to find the whole story online and it seems like a pretty big part of games community so id love to see the full story.
Favourite letter answer according to ChatGPT: To solve this problem, let's analyze the given information step by step: 1. We know that Sally, Dwayne, Anthony, David, and Franklin are exactly 10 years apart in age. 2. Let's assume the age of the youngest person, David, as "D" years. 3. Sally is two years older than David, so her age would be "D + 2" years. 4. Dwayne, Anthony, and Franklin's ages can be expressed as multiples of 10 years added to David's age: - Dwayne's age: "D + 10x" years - Anthony's age: "D + 10y" years - Franklin's age: "D + 10z" years Now, let's consider the favorite letters: 1. David's favorite letter is 'g'. 2. Anthony's favorite letter is also 'g'. 3. Dwayne insists that he likes all the letters equally except for 's'. 4. Sally's favorite letter is not mentioned explicitly. 5. Franklin's favorite letter is the missing piece of information we need to find. Since Dwayne likes all the letters except for 's', we can assume that his favorite letter is any letter other than 's'. Therefore, we can assign Dwayne the letter 'g' as well. Now, we have the following information: - David's favorite letter: 'g' - Dwayne's favorite letter: 'g' - Anthony's favorite letter: 'g' Given that three of the five people have their favorite letter as 'g', it would be reasonable to assume that Franklin's favorite letter is 'g' as well. Therefore, Franklin's favorite letter is 'g'.
I tried for hours to get this site working on 3rd party programs, however I was only able to get the site to load with the green square, and typing anything I think brought you to an error.
@@Skyrionn Yes I see that, and thank you very much for that! I'm legit the slowpoke meme so sometimes I figure stuff out way after the fact lol. While I'm at it, happy holidays! :D
Been binging these Valve game history/timeline videos and it really hit me just how great Valve used to be and how quiet they've been since Portal 2. I followed every leak about Portal 3 and Left 4 Dead 3, saw the pictures and screenshots of their work on L4D3 with Source 2, etc. I lost all hope when Marc Laidlaw left Valve but then I was finally excited when HL Alyx came out thinking they were finally gonna start working on games again and then AGAIN we were greeted with nothing but radio silence. Growing up with the HL universe and adoring it for being one of the most original IP's to exist and how everything is seemingly tied together by little hints and clues scattered through each game has kept me hooked and then it just stopped, I'm worried we'll never see a continuation or ending as all the original story writers and devs at Valve get older and older and start to retire. It's been over a decade since we had any real development in the story and HL Alyx was just one big retconn so it doesn't really count. And I keep hearing these stories about how so and so higher up dev at Valve wants to make a new L4D or new Portal or new Half Life but they're not being given the man power to start the project so it just makes me wonder what the heck is going on over there that's keeping everyone so busy that they can't actually make games anymore.
Atleast half life alyx actually came to fruition, it shouldn't have restored your faith tho, not with their track record lol, abolish those expectations because as you said yourself all the ogs are gone it'll just never be quite the same
@@imonke5303 Yeah my thought process when Alyx was announced was; New engine, new HL game. Maybe they'll actually start dropping new games again but nope. And don't get me wrong, I'm glad HLA at least pushed the story further but all we really got was a change in Episode 2's ending and like 3 extra seconds of actual story continuation. HLA proved they can still make a game and continue the story with who they have currently but they need to actually continue the games/story.
@@CheekyChan fair, guess it's a matter of them not being lazy now and actually trying to get manpower behind these games, guess only time will tell once again.
at 15:55 who ever said that was galdos it might be a differnt bot considering that galdos is dead in between portal 1 and portal 2 and it wouldn't be wheatly or a core but an ai like galdos who is simulating the world of portal and half-life
I hope the independent people making the 2 different versions of Half-Life 3 release this 2023. Both looked great but have been silent about updates for almost a year
8:32 I think the answer is H. the H in "Dwayne has no preference" is fading in and out. Then again, a few of the letters were doing the same in other places, and I'm sure somebody's figured out every appearance and their meanings.
I stumbled upon your channel in the begining of the year and I'm Glad I did. You do a truly quality content, I wonder if you would do videos about the Team Fortress 2 universe too. Anyways I wish you Happy and Relaxed Holdiays, see you next year.
My very first computer game was half life its kinda bad to get Spoiler with such a masterpiece it was hard for me to meet the expectations in other games because it had such a high standart.
Appreciate this moment, cause you're going to miss it. I am always mourning the experience I had when I found out about Portal 1 and 2 for the first time 😭
in the wich is the favorit letter the answer is probably "s" because if you look closely s does not exist in the list and when you write logout you can hear glados speak in the background (it jumpscared me one time)
I don’t know if you do like speculative theories but I remember when before JJ Abram’s movie Super 8 came out, there was an interactive feature in the game of portal 2 I guess in like the extras menu? It was years ago so my memory might be hazy but I remember it involved the train crash from the movie and the alien that broke free. I was wondering what your thoughts were on it?
I just watched this video, i dont think you know this, but the site still works entirely, all you need to play it is a browser/modded browser that supports flash or an old version of a popular browser to get it to work.
@@Skyrionn i actually already use one that works, with it being an old google chrome version and i tested the site with it and both the 2007 version and the 2010 version work pretty much how its expected to work
