What a slice of Country! First class. Many thanks for this posting. Porter showing he has a great sense of humour when Faron cracks a joke about the rhinestone suits. The laughter is so natural. Good music, good singing- long live RU-vid.
+Robert Bales Well, actually there is.Check out RFD-TV on the dish.Every Saturday night they have The Marty Stuart show.Marty has a lot of old and new country stars on the show.In fact Marty was a huge Porter fan and he produced his last album "Wagonmaster".
I really wish they'd put these old Porter Wagoner Show's out, on DVD. There are some great memories in these programs, like this one. And in brilliant, glorious, nudie suit, color.
I remember every sunday sometimes after church this show came on . It ran about 15 years I think . Osborne brothers , Pop Goes The Country , Arthur Smith , Bobby Goldsboro and Buck Owens had syndicated shows like this that we as a family watched together .
Always wished they'd put his show on dvd. Its my favorite of all the stars who had their own shows : ) Ive never seen an episode in its entirety before. THANK YOU for sharing : )
After watching this video, I know now what made these entertainers so special. It's not just the apparent raw talent that they possess, but they all have their own individual sound. When you hear Porter, you know it's Porter. When you hear Mel, you know it's Mel and so on. Today's acts sound so much alike that I can't tell one from the other. Thank God I grew up hearing these people's voices around my house. I truly feel fortunate that I was exposed to such good music.
Of all the many versions of "Ruby" there has never been one to compare with this, Mel's own version with just his acoustic guitar.... The most haunting song possibly ever written, especially knowing the fact it was based on a true story that Mel had read in the papers. I could loop this and run it all day and never get tired of it.
@@knowmusicman157 getting technical. I see your point. I still believe every version is a version cover version or not. Hell of a song Oil well always believe.
I know that I am replying to a very old comment, but it is with a touch of irony (because he was on the show), that I must say my favorite version has always been the one recorded by Faron Young (Jerry Lee Lewis also did a great one).
+Freeman Eaton Buck Trent tells a story about him and Grandpa Jones playing a show together and when they left they got their banjo cases mixed up and the next day Grandpa called Buck from a show and said "How the hell do you play this thing!".
These days are gone. Sad. This is when country was “country.” Mel sings Ruby better than Kenny EVER did. To me, Faron Young is the Pavarotti of country music. Best voice there ever was.
Porter was just a good ole boy, this show was one of a kind, they just cut up and had a blast. The talent back then was just second to none, I too could listen to Porter talk all day.
Porter was real. A country plowboy who made it big down in Nashville. I saw his show in person six times. He was a darn good guitar player and his custom made guitars had an incredible tone. He surrounded himself with some of the finest muscians in Nashville. He was one of, if not the first, country star to have his own show. He was the first country star to sell ten thousand seats on a regular basis. He was humble and appreciative. As my grandpap said one time... If you gave Porter and Dolly a mule and a plow, both woulda knowed which end to hook it to! 😆
I love how they left in whenever Porter had a brain fart (briefly forgetting lyrics) and how Porter didn't take himself too seriously. BTW, as of early 2020, I live in West Plains, MO, where Porter (and Speck, BTW) grew up. Porter has a street named after him here, too -- Porter Wagoner Boulevard.
I saw Faron Young in Meridian Ms in 75. It was at a calf scramble. He came out after Hank Snow and some of the other guys played. People just got up and walked out...but not me...I stayed. I saw the Hager twins from Hee Haw too...they stunk! Connie Francis I think it was...she sang Harper Valley and a couple more. She was really nice and a little on the lit side I think. It was a good show!
You prolly dont care but if you guys are bored like me atm you can watch all of the new movies and series on InstaFlixxer. Been binge watching with my gf these days xD
Just got to pickin your video.THANKs. i have been to all these entertainers shows.more so porter & mel as they played at. Our local ranches bsck in the 70s 80s Reedsferry N H. I will put thus in my play list.THANKs again
I had no idea that Mel Tillis wrote the song "Ruby." This song alone made him a millionare when Kenny Rogers and the 1st edition put it out in the late 60's.
Met him at Shonees in Nashville..HE saw my name on the bus and said Howdy Rob! My band members said you know Porter Wagoner I said yes we are old friends,,HAHA true story!
This is a great show. So much fun with Faron Young. The early years of Dolly. Mel Tillis, RIP. Ole Speck Rhoades, always tickles my funny bone. So good to see all the Wagonmasters.
When I was 16 years old, I would hurry home from my Saturday job, shower to get ready for my date, mom would have dinner, and I would eat while Daddy, Mom and I watched the PW Show. Then I was gone to pick up Rhoda. They're all three passed away, but I so wish I could just have one little Saturday night again.
to my understanding, the only WagonMaster still with us is Buck Trent. Buck is one of the greatest banjo players around. Most banjo players now only see his tail lights. Superb string bender technique that he uses. That Buck . Still on CFR vids with BIll Anderson
its strange watching porter wagoner now, he was my grandpas' brother.. i met him when i was 6 yrs old .... remember having to go with my grandparents to see him off at the airport. Back then i didn't think of him as famous, just part of my family... the man with the cowboy hat and flashy clothes.. that was all that stood out to me then... haha
Hi Paula.. Just read your post.. About 30 years ago there was a family driving around out here in the country where I live ( Oklahoma) claiming to be Wagoners. They were looking for a old house that they said Porter lived in when he was a little kid.. I always thought that little red sign that said that said Porter Wagoner lived here was a joke.. I guess it was true?
@@MarthaMedicare Ralph Emery interviewed Porter and asked the same question. Porter would not give specific reply stating did not want to talk about her after their so called feud. (confidentially)
Does anyone know if these RFD-TV broadcasts are the first time Porter's show has been seen since it's original airing? It's unusual to see these type of shows in reruns.
Virtually ALL the Porter Wagoner Shows were great - just totally natural pickin', singin' an' jokin'. Porter was way cool back then. Mel Tillis w/ "Ruby" - a true example of a real-deal "Singer-Songwriter"...just like he wrote an demo'd it. And what about "Unmitigated Gall"...now there's a number which Faron delivers as he also does on "I Just Came to Get My Baby Out of Here". The whole Wagonmaster gang - great players/singers. Man oh man - Mac Magaha and Red Hayes twin fiddlin' plus wonderful of Porter to sing (and acknowledge) Red's "Satisfied Mind" with Don Warden and George McCormick joining for the trio. Finally...can' t forget Dolly (that's for sure!) and her clever "I'll Oilwells Love You" song.
Does anyone remember if Porter ever was on Hee Haw? Somehow I can't recall seeing him. Hee Haw lasted 1969-1994, so makes one wonder why Porter never made the show. Hopefully I'm wrong.
@@jamesmitchell4160 Thx Oh, where did you find such specific info? There have been books written by several producers about Hee Haw. But good that Porter with Dolly appeared on the show. Just about every other Nashville star(s) appeared one time or other. The question now is where are all the taped 600 shows being stored? Suspect that Gaylord Enterprises (Opry) bought them around 1985. Interesting.
@@mosrite60 I googled Porter Wagoner Hee Haw and found it. Listed every song and the particular artist in the episode, which included 2 by Porter and 2 by Dolly but apparently no duet. I didnt actually watch the episode to see if the report was accurate. Watched her haw back then and it sounded odd he never appeared. He had his own TV show which may have limited him performing else where
