Portfolio Tips: The Portfolio I Used In My 2003 Interview At Nike

In 1998 I did a sponsored project for Nike in college. In 2001 I worked on projects for the Nike Innovation Kitchen while at Evo Design. In 2003 I finally interviewed for a job at Nike. This is the portfolio I presented along with some of my tips for putting together a portfolio that suites your personal style... and by the way, I got the job after presenting this :-)
7 years later in 2010 I interviewed at frog design for a creative director position I brought no sketches! I only Brough physical product samples. I laid them out on the conference table and when the interviewee said "no presentation?" I replied "pick a project and I'll tell you the story."... I got that job too :-)

Thanks for watching, Ani! I built that portfolio one sketch at a time over 5 years! Just do a little bit everyday. An hour or two a day makes a huge difference. When I was at Evo I was probably sketching 6 hours a day and then a bit more on weekends and nights to practice.

You've got some amazing designs. Had to pause a few times, seeing some that looked like something I'd draw. Been sketching shoes since the late 80's till this day, but never pursued my passion. I'm 47 now, and I look back on stuff i did in high school and think.. those would sell!

Probably the most important thing in your portfolio is first to think about it, and this video shows how we should do it. Thanks for mention the actual similarity between portfolios (and super cool stuff and photo editing that they show nothing). Thanks for sharing our experience and knowledge

What a refreshing perspective Michael. I think many of us have been drilled to present in-depth rationales and stories behind the birth of our ideas. But particularly if you're sharing work with other designers, I think it can largely speak for itself. The ideas are on the page. If people want additional explanations they can ask, but our value comes from an ability to synthesize new ideas and solutions. My first internship in 2017 I didn't have much direction, but I spent a ton of time sketching and came away with a stack of ideas. Like these, the volume alone was impressive. The reasoning behind them was icing.

So many portfolios have almost the same research recap and problem statement pages and sometimes you are 10 pages in before you can even see some design work! They start to blend together. You want to stand out and be remembered by the hiring manager who is looking through 50-100 portfolios.

Always great to look back! This is really insightful Michael, thank you for sharing. Most designers I've met have always been very private and precious in regards to their interviewing portfolios, so the transparency is always fun and appreciated. Seeing the sheer volume of work here that you were outputting with just a few years of experience is really inspiring. I would love to see a follow-up video with how this interview has contrasted with your subsequent interviews at Frog and Sound United as your career and position have evolved.

Thanks Ray. For frog I didn't show a single sketch. I brought production samples and said "pick a product and I'll tell you the story"... at Sound United I showed nothing. At that point my reputation did the talking... pretty drastic shift based on where I was in my career.

Great idea for a video Michael! Brings me back to 2006-'08 portfolio reviews and IDSA Conferences. I lived at Kinko's around that time. Also looks like the Zvezdochka shoe was inspired a lot by that sketch!

Ryan, LOL, yes. My local Kinkos knew me back then! ... that’s the shoe. I’m told that he saw our Evo prototype when he was getting a tour and that was the starting point. Who knows though, it was a little before I started there so it was a second hand story. The timing lines up though.

Thanks for the video, Michael! I went to the Art Institute in Portland, and had the pleasure of being instructed by Larry Selbiger, specifically for footwear, and its funny, as soon as I saw those car rendering on toned paper, I thought to myself "Larry did say he worked with Michael, and man, do the styles line up!" Both of you have really great touch, and precision on paper, and with pencils!

Good stuff, man! Fun to see this and if anyone doubts that there’s no singular “right” way to do a portfolio, I’ve done the exact opposite with mine and have landed some pretty cool jobs over the years. :)

7 years later when I interviewed at frog I brought no sketches! Just production samples. I laid them out on the conference table and said "pick a product and I'll tell you the story".... so both extremes can work. The only question is what can a person make work for them.

Wow I’m 17 years old and I never imagined that designers will need to present portfolios for 7 hours straight😮😮😮😮 I might quick my passion for it if thats my case 😢😢 Oh and also I was confused about the part where you said that in presentations you gotta tell them your experiences. But how if I’m barely 17 years old and I haven’t been in companies yet 😅😅 I’ll love to get an answer for that.

Hi there. That is why it is important to go to a good design school and get a few internships before graduating. Then you will have some experience to show and talk about.

That bubble bottom looks familiar... can’t place it, however. Razors you drew in 2000 were cutting edge (no pun intended) by current, space-age standards. Great stuff

Cool stuff, Michael. When you interviewed at Nike, were you still at EVO or had that already run its course? If you were, I'd be curious about showing concepts that may not have been released yet. It's a dilemma, especially for those who start looking during or right after their first gig.

Michael, what is your position on showing process from a current job? I don't want to set off any alarms with my employer by suddenly asking for permission to put sketches and renderings in my portfolio. I feel like my hands are tied with NDA.
