Source visited Portishead's Adrian Utley in his home studio. Here are some of his first reactions to Arturia's MiniBrute analogue synth, which was on loan for a few days. Adrian's got it hooked up here to his Maestro Echoplex EP-4, running into a Universal Audio 6176 channel.
Information on the Arturia MiniBrute can be found here:

me. I keep on watching Adrian Utley videos over and over again, just for pleasure. He's my hero. But I keep on watching this particular one because that bugger tuned me on to buy a Minibrute and I am looking for interesting details I may have missed or forgotten.

I just did 6/24/2019, for about the 6th time. Every time I think about buying something new, I come here and listen to the sounds he created with the genesis of the small analog hardware gear, minibrute! I'm so glad I didn't sell mine.

I fuckin agree. It's like instant flashback to The Rip or Machine Gun. He really has that dark style for playing synths, like detuned jazzy space, most of it into basslines. I can hear Beth singing over any of the things he played out of the Mini

This synthesizer is an absolute joy. If you're questioning your decision to buy it, just do it. Don't let the "one oscillator" fool you. This thing is POWERFUL, and it allows you to make so many sounds that you wouldn't expect from a $500 instrument. Thanks, Adrian, for helping make my decision to purchase easier! ;)

Such a pleasure and treat to hear someone who is talented, creative, and with deep knowledge of analogue synths “go on a journey” with a quality piece of hardware. Thank-you for this. I’m so tired of hearing talentless amateurs on RU-vid with their new $3k synth when they don’t have a clue.

@Bobby Lawson There is nothing quite like the MiniBrute. It is affordable, raw, and doesn't hide behind any brand name. It is a great starting point for anyone not familiar with sound design. The packaged templates make it easy to get started and get to making your own unique sounds. I love my vintage synths, but you can really push this and know it won't cost you thousands of dollars if you decide dropkick it whilest on stage.

By far still one of the funnest demo videos. A great synth and a great synth player! This was the video that introduced me to the minibrute some four yrs ago. After watching this synth guru rock it you can't help but be hooked and sold on analog and the brute.

So cool to have my comment highlighted. Thanks!! It just so happens I had sold my Minibrute about a year ago to get another synth, but I had to get it back. So I found one recently with a broken keybed and my dad bought it for my birthday coming up here at the end of this month. So now I have my first analog back and converted it to a module and you highlighted my comment too. Talk about a cool birthday, thanks again for getting this interview and demo, I watched it again just a few weeks ago too. Ha Ha!!

@@TwinCitiesOxygen Yes, though I use a Moog Sub Phatty as my main mono synth now I still use a bunch of the samples I recorded over the years and break it out when I want to get it’s more raw tone, as the Moog in a way is kind of more subdued.

jamie munro I want to buy a synth but I KNOW I'm gonna need some good effects. Can I get by with a multi-effect? I'm really not sure. I almost think it'd be worth it to just spend 300 bucks on a reverb. One effect might be enough for awhile...
@THEMASCHINER
@THEMASCHINER 9 лет назад
Matthew yes a Multi will be fine mate , just get the best you can 300 on one effect is great if you have that sort of cash but then you'll wanna look at delay etc also, gets pretty expensive at 300 a pop Obvious argument is buy once and buy one good version of each type then you're sorted but a decent Multi will be plenty sufficient plus you get variation and effects in parallel or series The weird trend at the minute is to completely hide synths with extreme effects such as strymon etc , I don't like that personally as I buy synths for their sound but each to their own
@mobile513
@mobile513 9 лет назад
Matthew C Good effects can be found all over eBay for under $70. Scores of them under $30. Behringer, Danelectro, Digitech, Arion, DOD, Line 6, EHX even. The Zoom G3 would be a really great start on multis, can be had used for a $100 and very clearly maps out how all the effects work analog style. You could get an idea of what you like and go from there, and there's a looper. Easy to get rid of too, they're popular. Digitech, Line 6 and EHX all have really good reverbs under a hundred dollars. Don't feared used pedals on eBay, as long as it was tested, you'll be fine. I've been on forums where people bought scores of them on weekly basis, it's worth it and addictive.

Do it! There are used Fulltone TTE’s and SSTE’s for decent prices. They are smaller, lighter, quieter, more reliable, and still being made unlike a Maestro Echo Plex. Not knocking Echo Plex’s at all but I felt more comfortable investing in a Fulltone. Still *need* a Roland RE:201 though. As far as pedals go the Skreddy Pedals Echo is my only delay pedal that comes close to the real tape echo. It’s absolutely wonderful.

I like to go back to this video. Adrian is a wonderful musician. Since this video was made, I have owned two Minibrute SEs and two standard Minibrutes. Now I only have one of the SE units left. It's an amazing sounding monosynth with its own character (one that is not present in the Minibrute 2) that sets it apart from other monosynths from past and present. If only it had been made in sustainable material. The rubber parts detoriate (especially on the OG that has these rubber sides, and also on the Microbrute) after a couple of years and melt, leaving you a sticky feeling and oily fingers. They should compensate this by offering cheap replacement parts for all units that suffered from this. I tried to get help with replacement parts for my Minibrute SE but they didn't have any (although it was made in 3000 units) and only offered Minibrute OG replacement pots and faders at around 80 euro in total which is too much, and the colours and amount of pots and faders är different on the SE). They have a chance to build a legacy with their early hardware synths but when they can't offer solid replacement parts to a synth that they retailed 5 years ago, I question if it's worth to buy any of their more recent hardware synths. If anyone has good replacement parts suggestions for the SE, as well as the other early Brutes, please leave a comment). I tried the baking soda bath to get rid of the oily feel of the pots and faders but this helps only temporarily and I don't tend to keep doing this.

all right! Pros: Its affordable, has a very flexible and otherwise pretty rare Steiner Parker filter in it, it has unique sounds which greatly differ from "moog standards", it can be very aggressive and gritty, but can also sound mellow, if you know how to tweak it. It comes with a great arpeggiator and has even aftertouch which makes it really fun to play. It has also a lot of connectivity with midi and CV so you can use it in modern and vintage setups.
