Hey Friends! I'm back with another follow up video on the Portkeys LH7P on camera monitor. It's good - not great, but i'm learning to love it more and more every event I shoot with it.
If you learned anything from this video - or have any questions about how the monitor can best fit into your workflow - i'd love to hear from you!

Definitely appreciate the follow up review/overview on the monitor. Been considering a Portkeys monitor for all of the same reasons on my A7sIII.

Hope they bring control support to fujifilm. We use Sony and Fuji and would be great to have a monitor like that to use on either system for control

Ahhh, it’s easy to forget wireless camera control isn’t a feature available to all. Surprised Fuji doesn’t offer that - especially on their more video-focused line.

Wow, that’s a really detailed on-site review! I’m currently using a Feelworld monitor, and it’s frustrating because every time I playback footage or navigate the menu, the connection between the camera and the monitor gets interrupted for 3-4 seconds. This issue prevents me from checking the footage immediately. Does this monitor also have a similar problem?
@RossBarnett02
@RossBarnett02 6 дней назад
@@jimuking4224 this monitor isn’t as bad as most. I had issues reviewing footage on my portkeys PT5, but not with this monitor. I don’t have a Feelworld to compare it to, but compared to Atomos monitors (which have the same problem) it’s fantastic at playback.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I was wondering does the monitor still display image and have all function if you shoot 4k 120fps? I am more into wildlife videography so I would quite often shoot in 4k 120p. Thanks again 😊
@RossBarnett02
@RossBarnett02 23 дня назад
I'm fairly certain it will work in all the modes, including 4k/120fps. Granted, the monitor doesn't display in 4k120, but it will still show image on screen.

Love the review, do you think it’s possible to have the v-mount battery setup on a gimbal? Or is it just better for handheld setups? I ask so because I shoot main handheld or on a gimbal.
@RossBarnett02
@RossBarnett02 23 дня назад
I think it's mainly best for handheld setups. If you were going for a gimbal with the v-mount it would probably have to be mounted to the side handle separate from the camera. I've seen some pretty cool setups with a v-mount on the back of a monitor off the side handle of a Ronin gimbal. But the monitor + battery is connected to the gimbal, not the camera. There's ways to do it, but ideally not like this setup.

Thinking about getting this monitor but just have 2 concerns. The 1000nit during daylight, like mid day, had any issues with this? And 2nd the 8 bit color, does that have much of an effect? I was thinking it might effect how luts look.
@RossBarnett02
@RossBarnett02 Месяц назад
For me, it’s less about the brightness and more with the reflective display that makes it difficult to see in direct sunlight. However, it’s much better than the standard monitor on the camera / so, it could be better - but it’s one of the tradeoffs. Technically a sunhood would help but in my opinion it’s not worth the extra weight/size. As far as the 8bit - I don’t mind it at all. I’ll save the 10bit for editing/delivery. Mainly I’m using a monitor for framing and not color accuracy. I know my cameras/exposure well enough to not need perfect 10bit color out of an on camera monitor. Most of the day I tend to be using the monitor for framing and watching the waveforms for proper exposure.

I just got myself one and in spite of being extremely helpful with all its functions… this thing is LOUD! Before moving to video I worked on set as a sound mixer for years and I would never allow anything this loud to be on set while shooting with sound. I see you have a shotgun next to it, how do you manage?
@RossBarnett02
@RossBarnett02 11 дней назад
I can see that - for me personally, the shotgun mic on the camera does just fine picking up ambient sounds at live events (laughter, cheers, general city noises, and the occasional talking directly to the camera). So, I don't rely on the on camera shotgun for much. But I have used this monitor often for interview content where I'm running a shotgun mic boomed overhead and have this monitor on the camera. I've never noticed the volume of the monitor to be an issue in any of my work.
@DrewProject
@DrewProject 11 дней назад
@@RossBarnett02 i hear you. For what I do for myself (film acoustic instruments while recording them live right under the microphones) this monitor is straight up unusable. For client jobs it depends. When I need to place ambient mics for background sound accuracy it could be risky depending on the environment. Interviews and spoken videos in general can definitely be set up so that the monitor’s fan isn’t an issue whatsoever so I can see why it’s a non problem for you. Ugh. I really like this monitor 😫

The infos you get displayed on the monitor are crucial.but man 7inch android slow booting…. 😢
@RossBarnett02
@RossBarnett02 Месяц назад
It’s the slow booting PLUS the additional steps to get wireless connected that adds to the boot up process even more. For me, it really took some time to get into the habit of not turning off the camera after grabbing a few clips. But I’m finally getting more used to the workflow 😅

Is there no way to let it automatically connect? I've read that the 5" version automatically connects to the camera wifi. That would be the only dealbreaker for me.
@RossBarnett02
@RossBarnett02 27 дней назад
@@KarelDebedts (unless I’m missing something) the “auto connect” is still going through the monitor’s menu and selecting your previously saved camera. Although it saves your camera info, you still have to select it and tell it to connect. So, not very “auto” in my opinion.
