You got me from just the intro man 🙌 been going through a crazy time in my life, and I'm trying to take my passion for videography and photography into a career. Just started a youtube a month ago. This way, I can always create when I don't have clients, 61 subs in a month seems pretty good to me plus I'm doing for the passion 😁. Keep at it man you got a new viewer, I always look for more camera related content.
Nice video Ross. I have a quick question, if I only have one camera and I want to use the all 4 microphones in which mode you recommend me to use it. In Mono mode?
@@SANTYPR15 depends on your editing process really. Mono mode will merge all 4 tracks into one audio track, which might be best if you want to have a file ready to post. Stereo mode will merge two channels on the right and two channels on the left, which would give you some control in editing, but not perfect.
Or the latest Tascam. Similar to the F3. I find the Tascam is way better since it has some features the F3 doesn't have. I almost ended up getting the F3 bit now I want the new Tascam.
@@GizmoMaxx lol, I rewatched what I said. I see zero lies. Portkeys could fix their entire touch to focus just by showing you a box of where your tracking focus point is. Currently, as the software stands, monitor+ is by far the best controls for this. Which, is sad. The recent touch to focus update from Atomos is even more sad. If you watch all my Shinobi II videos, especially the new ones, you’ll see I’m nowhere close to an Atomos Sponsorship 😅😅 I hate them all equally. Nobody seems to know how to make a perfect camera monitor with camera control.
@@RossBarnett02 just watched your latest video on the tap to focus “update” which still buggy aka no working 😵💫 tools are tools and that’s how I see and use and I don’t 😏 idolise no brand or anybody for that matter. All the best.
@@KayaSunerMedia yes, kind of. Tracking works - but Portkeys doesn’t show a box. Similar concept here, but without looking at the camera screen you have no idea where your tracking box is located. Still buggy, but it does work.
I think that’s why I’m so hard on Atomos. They don’t owe anyone a software update, but the fact they teased it for a month and then dropped a sub-par update deserves a roast.
@@domesdayfilms3165 Absolutely! An affiliate link is in the description of the video. If you purchase through that link, I’ll make a couple bucks. Appreciate it!
Tap to focus not working for me. Sony A7IV was on 3.x, now 4.0, Shinobi is on 11.02.00. Camera is in Spot Focus, Single Shot, Shinobi see's the camera, and Tap focus toggle is ON. Focus is AF-S or AF-C same behavior. Tap focus works the camera display, but not on the Shinobi II. A white focus box appears, and if I use back button focus on the camera body it focuses there. Anyone else seeing this issue? I am awaiting a solution from Shinobi.
well, I've got nothing... Seems like you're doing everything right that I would tell you to check. Didn't work on 3.x or 4? I wouldn't think it would work on 4 since firmware 4 came out after 11.02. Wish I could help!
@@RossBarnett02 Correct, didn't work on 3.x. Now, not on 4 either. Waiting to hear from Atomos. Their initial response asked me to confirm the very settings I told Tham I already had on. They didn't mention an issue with my going to FW 4.0, But, maybe they didn't notice that bit if info. We'll see.
We need to relax. It’s a new product, and firmware upgrades will happen in the future, hopefully. :) Works perfectly with the EOS R6 II, but no luck with charging the camera.
That's actually a good question. Do companies owe consumers software updates? I’m not sure. This is the second update since launch in August, so there will probably be more, but - it's an interesting question.
I just followed you from your comment on a video where you commented that you were 400 watchtime away to being monetized . Awnn .. congratulations. I’m 600 watchtime away too . Can we connect on instagram? .. what’s your IG ? .
@@elisguerra2491 Sony A7Siii is listed on the small list of supported cameras. Apparently, from what I’ve learned in the comments, the R6 mkII is the ONLY camera that supports tap to focus with tracking. Only one camera. It’s weird thing / not sure what to make of that.
@@seansiquig seems like if you have the R6II it’s an easy yes. It’s such an odd short list of “supported” cameras, & the R6II is the most supported of them all 🤷🏼♂️
@@Weddingcontentsweden I hope so. It’s obvious doing a single blanket firmware for all camera manufacturers isn’t working. I would like to see something like a separate firmware for each camera brand that just works. It just needs to work. It’s so darn close.
@@RossBarnett02 agree with you brother. So close yet so far 😅😅 I love the monitor, they just need to sort this last bit out then it’s the perfect monitor on the go 🙏🏼
Hello, i have purchased this monitor. Is there any reason my monitor is displayed the full 7 inch display? It’s only showing the camera display view from the camera it’s, in the center of the monitor with black edges around it. Any suggestions?
@@ashstonk interesting! I’ve heard of it working well with the r6II. This is on the Sony A7SIII - from what I’ve seen, focus tracking isn’t available on any of the compatible Sony cameras.
@@bogdanalbu_films nice! R6II is one of the listed supported cameras. Does autofocus allow focus tracking? Or is it still single shot autofocus like this?
Atomos is a bummer. I was unbelievably exited for the connect, and they shipped it without hardly any features working. And now it seems like they’re doing it again.
@@KevinBrady253 I think atomos needs to hire a few portkeys software engineers and blend them with the Atomos UI team. Then we might be cookin!! There’s definitely big flaws and big wins with both brands…
The concept is cool but the actual lcd display is terrible. Laggy and smudgy when you move the camera. And the USBC power out is only 10w which isnt enough to power most cameras, meaning the camera control cant be used anyway (if you usually power your camera via usbc) My R5C uses 27w I think. So it's actually useless. I'm going to have to do the right thing and get the SmallHD Cine 5 😢
@@sambowks Yeah.. C series canon cameras are specifically listed as not compatible. They at least don’t even try to make people believe that they work together.
With your videos out and your tests atomos can only improve with the next update ! Bought the shinobi and the simple fact of having a monitor is a game changer. Keep up the good work and thanks
Hey so have you figured a way to both power the monitor and run usb c control through the single usb port. Was thinking a usb c splitter , one cable into camera, the other into vmount battery.
@@nicholasrobertphoto yes, but opposite direction. From my V-mount battery D-Tap to the Shinobi II. Then USB-C from the Shinobi to the camera. Standard battery in the camera keeps the camera charged all day.
Working ok on a7iv for me. It's useful for touch focus racks and slides where you want to quickly change focus to far edge of screen, so I'm half happy. The disappearing focus box is hopefully something they fix asap.
Thank you for your honest informations, and you're absolutely right. Who tf thought this through? Can't be a camera operator.... My hopes were high, because it's ... well .... Atomos. But the lack of Tracking and of course the disappearing of the box in Single Point Focus is very disapointing, even if I never use the later. So I'm staying with the Monitor+ App and my iPhone or Pad mini as my monitor solution, because it can everything of this and much much more. Great App by the way, even has EL Zone for years. But of course it's still an iPhone/smartphone, and it's dimming when used extensively outdoor in the summer. Sigh*
@@KayaSunerMedia Yes, you can. An by the way, Monitor+ can record your clips in a proxy format too, and you can decide if you want record Log footage or bake your LUT in.
this is a fuckup on both atomos and sonys side. Sony because there is no mode in the camera that lets you export only the focus bracket to the HDMI feed, like canon does. And atomos for not copying what the Sony phone app does with its touch focus. For now I will stick to the phone app until they get this figured out. Ross. Since you are already yelling, could you please yell at sony a little, so they make a focus bracket HDMI out option? Thanks.
I updated last night, I came to the same conclusion, same issues, the next update also needs a low power mode when no signal is detected so I don’t have to power down so much, it’s annoying…
@@joelmoralesiii9427 that could be a good improvement! I don’t tend to turn my camera off very much during a shoot but would make sense for conserving battery.
The Shinobi II is a half finished product. And I fear will never be finished. I bought the LH5P II for my GH6 and the camera controls work great, but the micro USB to USB c cable doesn't have enough amps/Watts to charge the camera when it was on and the battery drains. I noticed the Shinobi II had USB c to USB c connection so I bought that and was going to send the LHSP II back, but the Shinobi arrived and felt cheaper, the power through the USB c was still insufficient to charge the camera when it was on, and the camera controls were worse. And the the Shinobi doesn't have an input for f tap power so I had to buy a d tap to NPF adaptor. Add3d to that Record doesn't work, and of course no focusing, so I susp3ct the Shinobi will be the one going back
@@ukwildlife interesting! I had nothing but issues with the usb connection for the LH5P II on my Sony A7Siii. The wireless connection worked great. So, I opted for the Shinobi II over the LH5PII because of the reliable USB connection (and, it keeps my camera charged all day with full power). I like the Shinobi II. I really do. But, this recent firmware with the “tap to focus” update is certainly half baked.
@RossBarnett02 sadly no wireless connection with the GH6 which limits my options. Th fan on the LH5P ii is a pain too. I might send both back and stick with my cheap monitor for now. Might email atmos and see if they can give me the output of the USB c port, pe4haps the Panasonic bodies require more Watts than the Sony bodies
@RossBarnett02 I suspect this is the issue. I thought that was enough for GH6, but turns out I remembered wrong. It needs to be 27W! I'm not sure why it won't record with touch screen, but I've seen other folk found issues using the gh6 and shinobi ii.
@@ukwildlife Exactly why would they make a monitor with camera control that cant be plugged into the camera because it can't supply enough power to even the most mainstream mirrorless video cameras. Surely that is what it's intended to work with? It's cheap but 100% not with the money. Rather go for a SmallHD the panels are WAY better.
What I don’t understand is how an app for your phone (monitor+) does focus tracking perfectly! But a company of this size can’t even keep a box on a screen!
@@niallpattersonmedia7709 that’s a fair point. I’ve always wondered the same. I think it has something to do with camera companies giving up a lot more control via WiFi, and not via USB-C. I just want a usb-c based monitor+ where I don’t have to use my Phone on set…. At this point buying an additional phone is 10x better than any camera monitor. MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!!! WHY??
Man, it's a tough call. I love the wired connection of the Shinobi II. The USB-C connection for camera control is solid, and always works. The LH5P II and LH7P are the best alternatives (LH5PII is the best 5" alternative), but I don't love the wireless connection to the camera (it's unstable). HOWEVER - the Portkeys monitors both utilize touch to focus with tracking, and both have HDMI out ports. BUT I still like the software on the Shinobi II.... so, it's a toss up.
Update: from what I’ve gathered from the comments section, focus with tracking works perfectly with the r6 mkII. Seems like that’s the only camera model this update was built for. Every other supported camera works identical to my Sony A7SIII here. For what it’s worth: I’m still using this monitor on my main rig. Mainly because I’ve developed a workflow around using a combination of manual focus and center auto focus. Regardless, the Shinobi II is still a fantastic option for seeing your settings on the monitor. BUT MAN, I know so many people were holding out for focus features and I know so many people are going to be disappointed in this update. Stay tuned for more. 😅
Yes, maybe we’ll need to wait a little longer. I’ll try it on my R6 Mark II in a bit. Let’s hope this drama has a happy ending sooner than we expect This is my first monitor, and I really like it. There’s a slight delay when reviewing footage after recording, and I’m not sure if that’s normal. However, I think it’s worth the money if you have the budget. It would be helpful if there was a thread on the left side as well, not just at the bottom, so it could be used vertically too. Overall, I’d give it an 8 out of 10.
This is kinda how I feel. There are features that they keep teasing that would be incredible, but end up being a letdown. Overall though it's still my everyday monitor. The camera control is enough for me as is, but touch focus (that utilizes tracking) would be nice in some instances.
@@RossBarnett02 Sorry for the delayed response. I tested it on my R6 Mark II, and I think it works great. When I tap on the screen, for example, on a moving person, it performs excellently. I don’t think I have anything to add. Thanks to Atomos. I wish you success with your videos as well.
Idk if you watched the IBC videos about this touch to fucus. But I kinda figured it would be like that. Idk if u noticed but the rep was trying to follow the person on the screen but he kept touching it to keep the the person on fucus. Maybe this should be this first of many updates
@@HorizonVisionaries oh yes. I remember seeing a demo where they only had it in photo mode and would just single tap. I had a feeling this would be the case.
The shinobi ii has been such a disappointment. From the failure to support features they advertised to the advertisements themselves. They advertised this worked with the R5C. Even their latest videos still show the R5C on the clips and thumbnails. No such support exists and camera control is all over the place with all the cameras. People wanted to at least see touch focus and they come out with this lol. I returned this so fast the day I got it. Wasn’t down to wait for firmware updates just to be disappointed. Form factor is nice, it’s got that Atomos image quality, nice glass touch feel, great power options (which btw the usb c pd out is a hit or miss)
I get what they're trying to do. I see the vision, I just don't understand who at Atomos is releasing these incomplete products/firmware. Seems like it's more of a PR headache than anything giving customers empty promises and underdelivering over and over again.
It doesn't supply enough power for the R5C anyway. Not even half.I dont know why they didnt just make the power pass through, I mean USBC can handle 100w right?
I am just simply confused I have researched everywhere and it seems like nobody wants to review a field monitor or external viewfinder if you will but basically I want an external monitor such as this mounted on the top of my camera where the hot shoe is.. I have a Sony a74 and all I want to use it for is simply so I have a bigger screen to look at while taking a photo or reviewing the photos. I would like to be able to control the ISO and aperture and what not I don't need a million controls I just want to control the main settings. I don't want to have any lag I would just like for it to display what is currently being shot and I only do photography I don't do videos. So I don't need a recorder. If it comes with it fine but I don't necessarily need it. I would like to screen to be bright as I do a lot of photography in the day and in the sun
The Atomos Shinobi II will be your best option. With the recent software update - they've added photo controls to the monitor so you can see all your settings + physically take a photo from the monitor screen. The Tap to Focus is somewhat limiting in my opinion, but it's there. Check out my latest videos on the Shinobi II!
@@RossBarnett02 out of curiosity would you spend 350 used on a Ninja V or New Shinobi for 350? On FB Marketplace I've seen a few I know it's a recorder but is it any better? @@RossBarnett02 hmm well alright then thank you, am curious however would I benefit at all from a Ninja V+ ?? @@cleysoptique8749 Typically the record feature of the NinjaV line is for getting codecs (like ProRes) out of a camera when you can't already record to that codec internally. From what you're describing - doesn't sound like you need all that. Also - NinjaV doesn't have camera control.
@@treelinevisuals I thought about a comparison video, but I don’t have any of the 35mm to compare to 😂 I’ve just kept the 27mm equivalent on the camera and rolled with it.
