It's a fucking tragedy and a sign of our times that MacAlpine is not given the universal recognition his skill level deserves. The sweeps, the shredding. OMFG!

Tony MacAlpine is just a beast. I'm convinced his hands are bionic. Saw Tony on the Maximum Security tour in 2014, and even his sound check will blow your mind. If he missed a note, he just turned it in to the prettiest sweep arpeggio you've ever heard. They were the best mistakes I've ever heard. Thank you for sharing this piece of badassery.
@davsor08
@davsor08 Год назад
Very late comment, I know :D Miles Davis once said about mistakes something in the lines of ' It is no biggie that you play a wrong note - what matters is the following note' I've been T-Mac fan since Maximum Security and if he ever plays a wrong note, which I haven't been able to hear, well he sure knows how to pick the best possible following note 😉

I wish more genres and the prog scene would treat it's classic songs and musicians like jazz musicians do. A ton of extremely skilled and nuanced players building on standards, and instead of arguing over who should and shouldn't play a song, we just listen. Judging by the comments we are becoming more open to that kind of thing.
@suprchickn7745
@suprchickn7745 3 года назад
Very solid insight. I like the way you think! I think part of the issue is jazz standards are old enough that no one owns the copyrights anymore. All the copyright holders have to play well together for this to happen.

And, are we not all part of the prog rock family? I, for one, feel most grateful these favorite musicians of mine got together and gave me (and all of you) the gift of this performance. Better than Petrucci, Tony has a smile on his face, Petrucci always looks terrified and stressed out that he is going to make a mistake This video was so refreshing to watch, I stopped being a fan of Dream Theater because Petrucci just ruined the band, I play guitar and would never emulate Petrucci's pathetic looking style. MacAlpine is playing with no fear and simply killing it, that is how to play guitar, you will always make a mistake from time to time but a good guitarist you will never know it.

No if's or but's, these guys are shredders. MacAlpine has a much more post-bop jazz sensibility than most metallers. To some ears this may not "rock as hard" as the more traditional harmonies. For me, a blazing lead that suddenly spreads out into a more alien harmony is like a coaster drop. It's great when they lock back into primal grooves.

Just a bunch of guys hanging around the local barbershop, having a conversation in music. They're all fun to listen to, have something to contribute individually and as a group, and no one needs to have the last word. They could do this at a Ted Talk and teach a few people some things.

Ecclesiastical Umbilical cord/ chord - Sheer Honey for the Ears. I am by no means a huge fan of "Prog Rock", BUT this quartet transcends any comparison to that which has gone before in this genre. They are seemingly a hybrid of all that was brilliant in bands such as ELP & Yes, for starters, Man, this is the resurrection of Prog Rock !

***** Odd. MP has been with DT for 25 years. Still a hint of jealosy. You should have auditioned for the band after MP left.

***** Your stupid remarks mixed with unwarranted hate shows us who you are which he was spot on to begin with. A tip that most of you jealous guys don't seem to grasp, if you spent half the time working on your ability to play as you do crying about someone better than you, you might actually be something. But people like you are pretty damn stupid so I doubt it will happen enjoy being nobody.

T-Mac is literally the most underrated guitarist ever sometines I wonder he is not even been called by Satriani once for a G3 tour. Sheehan is always being the craziest bassist ever surpassing Levin and Myung both I must say Portnoy was literally on fire leading the whole group since both of them are his compositions The man who steal the show was Derek, OMG controlling four keyboards together with that god speed like Rudess and tuning some weirdest sounds ever like what Steve Vai do with his guitar

I think Tony likes playing piano too much honestly. That's a lot of touring. Not sure if Tony has ever toured like that!
