In Portrait Photography Light Painting : Guide with Flash and LED we take a look at how to paint with LED light in the studio and combine it for both still life and portrait images. In the video I demonstrate various LED products and how the different types affect the results. I also go over things such as camera settings and environmental considerations that will give you the most control over your final images. Light painting can be applied without flash photography, but in all instances this video features a flash-lit subject as well because I think that's more applicable to portraits.
One key to control is a very dark environment. This gives you the flexibility to use really long shutter speeds which is necessary for covering a lot of space with physical movement.

You sir are the first RU-vidr to actually use tl60 for the light painting rather than just saying it. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. The only question is TL60 or LC500R?

Absolutely loved this content, could you do a more in depth of this topic like comparing tube lights vs the mini leds? I have a normal light stick and rgb small leds, wondering which is better and how to simulate the tube shape with mini led. And other question the back button focus so if you use that on auto you don’t need to turn to manual after ? Thanks!

Great info. Any recommendation on setting when, let say, self-portrait with light painting without a second helper? thanks.

Hey Robert. Is there any real reason to buy magmod grids/gels over the godox round accessories? I own ad200 and shoot weddings/portraits

So first you expose for the led light so put the setting in camera take photo to see if the led shows well . And later put the flash right .?

I’ve been doing this on my Sony but I picked up a Olympus camera because they have live composite where you can take on image with flash and then while watching on a monitor do your light painting and view it there.

That’s wild, and would be extremely helpful to know how much you’ve filled a frame, or if you were trying to make a certain pattern. Seems like something you would see on a phone app, which I think camera brands need to do a lot more of.

I joined PPA this year and it's been a great learning resource. I've thought about going thru the CPP process, more so as a confidence builder than anything else. Any thoughts you're willing to share on this certification? Thanks!
@robhallphoto
@robhallphoto 3 года назад
In general, I’m not interested in certifications unless they are a) required by a client b) preferred by clients. To me photography is a “Wild West” type industry; that anyone can market services without any form of check or balance. Because of this, results, pricing, experience and service are really the aspects that define a client’s choice, and I’ve never had any client mention any form of certification. Even things like those stupid “ask your wedding photographer this” lists from the knot that clients use, don’t include any questions about certifications. That being said, because I’ve never gone through it, I have no idea if it’s beneficial to skill growth as a photographer.
@ulloajosh
@ulloajosh 3 года назад
@@robhallphoto I agree, and even the survey data that PPA puts out show that a small percentage of clients care about certifications. If I were to do it, it would only serve to take the edge off the imposter syndrome that tends to creep in. Really appreciate your response. Thanks for your time and the content you put out.

Too bad the big companies don't have live composite which works great for light painting. Maybe one day technology will get shared across to the other brands. Plus, you don't run into the over exposure issues you do with a long exposure.

4:13 and on - I don't get it. Turn the lights on, get autofocus real quick and turn the lights off??? Do you not have a humble _autofocus assist light?_ I am confused.
@robhallphoto
@robhallphoto 3 года назад
No, I don’t use AF assist beams or grids, never found them to be all that reliable for accurate focus on mirrorless in these situations. That’s why I just do manual. But you can use whatever focusing method works best for you!
@mediocreman6323

@@robhallphoto - Then why not use a flashlight? They usually have a button which keeps them on only as long as you have your finger on it, it is sure quicker, and should you not want to blind your models, you could always dim the thing somehow, to just give the autofocus system enough light to work with. Do flashlights come with holders for ND-filters? Hm… 😉
