Have been making my way through the 2022 season after getting the foundational knowledge from your video (thank you very much), am currently watching Mugello and I noticed how many times the bikes cross what would be considered ‘track limits’ in F1, especially they cross the broken lines to the pit entry after the last corner before the start/finish straight. Are there no warnings and penalties for running outside the painted lines? It seems that as long as the bikes don’t crash they can take a racing line at the very limits of rumble strips and any asphalt?

@@MV-vv7sg I think since the riders don't go into the pits often in the race there aernt any rules around crossing the lines on pit entry. In terms of other track limits, you may have noticed the green painted pads on the outside of the rumble strips this is the track limit, if they cross onto that they have exceeded track limits. Race direction has sensors on all of theses green sections that detect when any bike crosses into it and they are insanely tight on it (they will detect a tire millimeters over for mere seconds). The riders can exceed track limits 3 times before receiving a warning and if they exceed two more times after that they will get a long lap penalty (one of the corners at every track will have an extended section the rider must ride through, normally adding 3 ish seconds). If any rider exceeds the track limits on the last lap they will get demoted one place unless they have a huge gap to the rider behind where a minor infringement will be ignored. It's a pretty good system and catches tiny infringements but is absolutely clear

No problem, I enjoy answering questions. The answer is that racers and teams have huge, homologation and testing restrictions during the season so can't go out and ride next year's bike on a free weekend (much like F1 I think) and because of the homologation rules they also can't fit all the newly developed components on the current bike just to test in a practice session. However, the teams will still be building and developing the next year's bike during the season. Each manufacturer has specific test riders that can ride and develop with no restrictions, but because of the rules the racers don't get to ride and thus share their thoughts on the next year's bikes so the mid season test allows them to try the next year's bike and make sure it's heading down the development direction they want. I hope that explains it
