Welcome to 1 Minute Animals! Join us as we discover the most fascinating facts about the Animal Kingdom. Subscribe for an exciting and educational journey into the wild!
The Portuguese Man O' War, also known as the "Bluebottle", is a marine animal that belongs to the hydrozoan family. Despite its resemblance to a jellyfish, it is actually a siphonophore, which means it is a colony of individual organisms that work together as a single unit. Its tentacles, which can grow up to 50 meters in length, are covered in venomous cells that can cause painful stings to humans and other animals. Despite being commonly found in tropical and subtropical waters around the world, the Portuguese Man O' War is a dangerous animal that should be avoided by swimmers and beach-goers.

My mom and I stepped on the tentacles of one of these in the 1950’s, Jacksonville Beach, FL. It had washed up on the beach and people were gathered around looking at it. Their tentacles are long and invisible against the sand. We didn’t know we were stung until we got back to the house. My foot went numb first, then the numbness traveled up my leg until I couldn’t stand up. We called the coast guard and they put witch hazel on our legs until the pain subsided. After that, there were no other side effects.

One day, the wind had been blowing portugese men o war all day onto the seagrass. They say you’re supposed to pee on it or put meat tenderizer… in Hawai’i they say to rub wet sand on wherever you were stung…. the wet sand seemed to work for me, the pain went away faster than it did for people who peed on it🤷🏽‍♀️. We’re taught to always look at the sand before going in the ocean to make sure there’s no man-o-war washed up on the sand, if there is don’t go in the water. If we find them on the sand, we pop the “bubble” and bury the tentacles/stingers deep so they’ll dry up and die and not sting anyone else.

Got my right hand really tangled up in one of their tentacle thingys. Probably some of the most excruciating pain I have ever felt in a long time. We were at a beach in Bermuda, it was was 2019 I think, and I was swimming in a bit of a rocky area of the beach. There were a bunch of kids there, really young ones too by the way, anywayd I see this thing floating in the water. I think it's some weird kids toy or maybe some weird purple plastic bottle, so I swim over to it trying to grab it, and to my surprise, it was NOT a kid toy/plastic bottle. I swim and run out of the water screaming of course, had no clue what even happened. The bus ride back to the cruise ship we were on was an hour by the way, and the trip to the actual hospital on the island was like an hour and a half. We headed back to the ship since it had first aid and was closer, and I was absolutely delirious on the bus lol. Anyways, spent most of my trip back on the boat, hand my hand wrapped up in warm wet towels for a few days too. Overall... not fun

These are very common in the beachs off Australia. We just call them Blue Bottles, and whilst extremely annoying, nobody is terrified of them. We are acutely aware of how painful they can be if stung, but apart from being extremely painful, being stung doesn't cause any other problems. They may cause anaphylac shock in the same way bee stings can, though, but I've never heard of that occurring.

I think they're also called Blue Bottles and they sting so bad. Their tentacles will wrap themselves all around your legs, arms and body and its so difficult to get off of you. You can see when somebody meets one while frolicking in the waves because suddenly they're frantically thrashing about and screaming while grabbing at their body. The burn intensity doesn't let up for a half hour, which seems like you're on fire for hours. Longest half hour of my life.

My sister and I were swimming in the sea once, and she pushed me out the way as we both raced to get the colourful balloon floating on the water. She suffered greatly for the next 12 hours. Normally a very strong girl, she kept waking up, coming into the kitchen screaming and shaking her hands, asking us to help her. Nothing we could do. We'd already pulled the stringy bits out of her hand and I believe the hospital said she'd have to ride it out. Thank God she was a stronger swimmer than me 😏

We grow up getting stung by these in Hawaiʻi. I can assure you a box jellyfish sting is MUCH more dangerous, unless you’re allergic to man-o-war stings. In that case, you may die of asphyxiation, but usually it just means you’ll welt more. Vinegar or meat tenderizer tends to be the trick, but I also rub sand to get the stinging polyps out and I find a specific kind of leaf, chew it, then spit it on the sting to try and numb it until I can get the person to a cold public beach shower and some of the aforementioned vinegar or meat tenderizer. After that, Benadryl if need, and some Tylenol or ibuprofen for the pain, if it’s bad enough. Most people just rub sand on it, pee on it, and deal with it, even go straight back into the water 😂 I just know what to do because my family has pretty bad reactions to stings in general.
