Thanks for the explanation. This is something that is very much glossed-over in high-school and undergrad physics curricula. It's always struck me that it seems very unlikely that any atom will ever transition to a higher energy level, if it will only accept photons of a very vanishingly exact frequency. What if that photon has infinitesimally more energy than is needed for that transition? I've often wondered if that extra energy will be channeled into other modes. That's not quite what was addressed here, but I'd love to learn more. What other sources would you recommend, for further research by those of us who want to learn more?
