That was very interesting. In German, of course, there are also possessive pronouns. And they often change because they are used in relation to a particular case. In Finnish, this is probably also the case, for example the word meille, I assume it is in the allative here. In Germany, this would be the accusative. Now it would be interesting to see how they change the possessive pronouns in Finnish when they are adapted to the cases.

Something to point out is that, (to my knowledge), the pronoun and possessive 'hän/hänen' can also be used for referring to someone as 'they' if it is only one person, but 'he/heidän' is used for referring to more than one person as 'they'. Also I think that 'Ne' and 'Se' usually refer to non-person objects, so it could be rude.

are the possessive suffixes even used in puhekieli? I got the feeling that you can say mun kirjani or just mun kirja and it means the same
@mikahamari6420
@mikahamari6420 2 года назад
Exactly, they mean the same. In kirjakieli possessive suffix is not optional, so you could write for example *Tämä on minun kirjani* 'This is my book' or *Kirjani on hyvä* 'My book is good'. Because the possessive suffix tells the person, word *minun* is optional and can express emphasis: *Minun kirjani on hyvä* 'My book is good (but another book maybe is not)'. In speech we don't use possessive suffixes, so they would be *Tämä on mun kirja* and *Mun kirja on hyvä* .
@miem9775
@miem9775 2 года назад
@@mikahamari6420 oh the part with putting emphasis is quite interesting kiitos :)
@ratflail215
@ratflail215 2 года назад
Nah. You can just omit "mun" and just say "kirjani"
@mikahamari6420
@mikahamari6420 2 года назад
@@miem9775 Great. :) The emphasis could mean in different context different things, you can modify the effect with your tone of voice. It could be used also neutrally, but the main rule is: because *minun* is optional, writing it in the sentence have a function.
@Lunaholic94

Thanks. How to use the sufixes ni, si etc?
@okaro6595
@okaro6595 7 месяцев назад
They are mandatory in written language. In spoken language they are rarely used. One could use them for emphasis. Note on written language one can leave the first or second person pronoun out as the possessive suffix tells it. Again this would be rare on spoken language-

Well, talking to my friend it's easy when my/yours/his/hers/its are always "hänen": Onks hänen auto pesty? (is your car washed?) and Hänen avaimet unohtu kotiin (I forgot my keys home). Likewise, we use "hän" for singular subject pronoun and "he" for plural 😁 some confusions might happen but it's worth it

hello sorry i searched on google "possessiv pronouns in finnish" after watching your very helpful video, but they didnt give me the same result as you. for example for "my ...." they gave me = minun kuppini your cup = sinun kuppisi etc so the word changes, at least according to the website. so i was wondering if you could explain why the word change please, if you can.
@KatChatsFinnish
@KatChatsFinnish 10 месяцев назад
The version you are describing is kirjakieli. So the grammatically correct one. In puhekieli (or spoken langauge that people use when speaking) the same would be: “mun kuppi” “sun kuppu” etc
