Great interview series. Thank you Shehzad. For Punjabi-Urdu debate, here is a “revolutionary” 😀 idea. Urdu is a dialect of Punjabi. Urdu means language of army/troops/soldiers. And guess what majority of soldiers during British Raj (and even before British) were from Punjab. This is why Urdu evolved in few major cities including Lahore, Delhi, and Lukhnow. People like Nizamuddin Aulia were pupils of Punjabi teachers. For Punjabis it’s no effort to switch between Urdu and Punjabi. Peace

What English was to British colonialists, Urdu has been to Islamists that created pakistan. Forcefully imposed on Bengalis ( which they resisted successfully ), Sindhis, Baloch, Pashtoons and Punjabis by Punjabi Establishment/Elite.

PAKISTAN, THE U. K., AND THE COLONIAL MINDSET Shehzad, what's with Pakistan and its colonial hangover after 75 years of the so-called independence. Pakistan acts as if the U. K. is still its colonial master. Notwithstanding the anti-Western rhetoric while at home, Pakistanis run to the U. K. when things get hot for them at home. Same with the Pakistani media persons, Moeed Pirzada for example. They have properties in London. Compare this to India. The only Indians that run to the U. K. are the financial criminals like Nirav Modi and Mallya. These guys are in good company with the Russian oligarchs. No Indian politician runs to the U. K. If you see the latest international meetings, Rishi Sunak acts like a school boy in front of Modi looking for a pat on the back.

Hackneyed discussion. If East Pakistan (later Bangladesh) wanted Bengali to be the national language along side Urdu, why did its elite accept the Radcliffe line in the first place? Its linguistic heritage was secure in a United Bengal operating under an Indian Union. You can't have your cake and eat it too. You remain wedded to the Urdu speaking Nawabs as long as it was in your interest. Once the partition took place, suddenly, your 'nationalistic' feelings came to the fore. It was rank opportunism and nothing else. Secondly, this drivel that Urdu was 'imposed' has outlived its significance. Come up with something fresh. Urdu came with a formidable Farsi-Arabic pedigree. The latter two languages plus Sanskrit have, like Urdu, also nourished regional languages here. The differences are largely phonological and syntactic. Vocabulary is shared across the board. The big icons of Sindhi, Punjabi, Balochi, Pashto etc. had all been well-versed in Farsi and Arabic the knowledge of which they then deployed in polishing their own dialects. There was nothing 'imperial' occuring there. Arabic and Farsi are also part of their collective heritage. I am sure a Baloch, Pashtun, Sindhi, Punjabi, Hindko, Kashmiri, Seraiki etc. recites Arabic whenever he prays. Am I to accept that it is not part of his identity? The point is Urdu was not something crafted in Byzantine corridors of power and then forced upon a hapless population. It has always carried the spirit of this soil. However, I still think Farsi should have been made compulsory in schools. It would have solved many of our problems. Kindly, avoid applying these trite leftist abstractions on post-1947 domestic linguistic dynamics. It reeks of intellectual laziness. Lastly, there is no need to indulge in this politically correct bunkum that 'Oh all languages are equally great. And therefore one shouldn't grade them.' There are no Hafiz, Ferdowsi, Bedil, Saadi, etc. in the Urdu language. Likewise, there are no Wali, Mir, Souda, Ghalib, Anis, Dabeer, Hali, Iqbal, etc. in Punjabi, Sindhi, Baloch, Pashto languages etc. It is a fact. Let us not whine pointlessly. Some languages are more refined than others. And in our case it doesn't imply any hostility or condescension. As I stated earlier, all great regional icons gave due regard to the matriarch of this family i.e Farsi. Urdu is not just any other language. It is the Persianised representative of our collective heritage.
