The fact that we get free documentaries on RU-vid by FRONTLINE PBS is truly a gift. 👏👏👏 May I also remind you the fact that our Native American population in our motherland, the Continent of America before the European Colonizers arrived, was around 15 millions, while the European population in their motherland, the Continent of Europe was around 25 millions. Today, Native American population is 15 million, while the European population, in the Continents of America + Europe, is a staggering TWO BILLION! A shocking sad truth. 😔 In my humble opinion, it's about time to decolonize the Colonized lands, and return it to rightful owners Native American people. Notorious global cardinal crimes the Christian West has committed, and benefited a great deals, such as Slavery & Colonialism had long been over, why on earth is notorious Colonization still lingering on, may I ask? 😔
I keep on seeing this comment on Frontline documentaries. Keep it up, I'll keep on liking it. I completely agree with you, Frontline on YT truly is a gift.
It came about more probably in the 1800s or earlier. I don't remember the particulars..you can look it up. I think there weren't qualified people, or there were not a lot of things to look for...
@@frankskoda-simmons because of my occupation I personally know of cases where a coroner didn’t list the accurate cause of death or other things that contributed to death. When families hired their own pathologist and the the coroner made addendums to the death certificate
My husband drown and the coroner took body parts without verbal or written permission from myself or his family. It took 2 years to just get the paperwork. On the paperwork they forged my signature. It was a complete nightmare and very painful to go through.
i love these documentaries that frontline puts out, and this one is exceptionally done. thanks for the amazing work put into this, but maybe it’s almost too good. because i can barely get through this due to how mad i’m getting. these incompetent coroners need to be punished. or at least have the same bogus causes of death they’ve dealt out placed on their own loved ones. i feel so sorry for the families that have lost their loved ones and haven’t gotten justice, hearing what happened to cayne miceli makes me so sad and scared that something like that might happen to someone i know and love… as mad as i am, i’m glad i watched this because now i am aware of this issue. also, i had to pause and take a walk when they talked about minyard’s “palace of truth”. please shut up oh my god
Thank you, Frontline. I never would’ve thought about this industry without the series. Everybody who reads this comment thumbs up this video so more people can see it.
This is very disturbing indeed!!! I am a medical doctor, trained in the U.K., and forensics is a well established sub-specialty within the specialty of pathology. In problem cases a Home Office appointed forensic pathologist is appointed to oversee all the proceedings. In S Africa there are also dedicated pathologists. I did my research paper (for a BSc Hons in Aerospace Medicine) on the identification of civilian cockpit crew following a fatal aircraft crash using forensic odontology (dentistry). The forensic odontologist works in very close investigation with a forensic pathologist. In the UK the coroner is not a medically qualified person, but someone appointed by the system to oversee the procedure of establishing the cause of death - he/she gives no medical opinion as the cause of death is made by the forensic pathologist. The coroner rules on the manner of death - natural or unnatural, and the latter includes suicide, homicide and accidental.
My profession is regulated by the state. Training, continuing education, clinicals, a very hard national test on all the nerves, bones, muscles etc......I'm a massage therapist
So the one owner of FMG who was interviewed about Dr Gill coming back to work there (seen toward the end of this video) showed a lot of deception with his body language when answering questions about Dr Gills skill and competency. (One sided shoulder shrugs, verbal hesitancy etc.) It was actually incredibly obvious how much he DOESN'T have faith in the Dr's ability. And I really do think it all comes down to a lack of trained people applying for these jobs. They have a position they need filled, and they're just taking what they can get. Which is really sad. Still, not at all surprised the company fired Dr Gill after the interview. They knew it was a bad look.
This is very alarming, my father was murdered in Indiana 20 years ago. My mother was beaten severely and was left in a coma in Arkansas, we were told she would not be alive in a couple of days yet she was able to come off the ventilator two days later, she was not able to talk, eat or function independently but we had hope so against the advice of the hospital that said we should just not bother any type of care at all, we hired an ambulance to drive my mother back to IN so she could go to a care facility here and we could be with her and support her in hopes she may recover some brain function again. She ultimately died from this beating so she was murdered in Arkansas technically I guess but died in IN and doesn’t matter, nobody will ever be held accountable it seems nobody cares now! I think I know who killed her. It’s even in the hospital records the beating photographs, injuries, and a report yet no investigation or charges or anything she is just dead and nobody cares!
I worked in death care for many years. Most people we not aware that each state and county have different qualifications for certain jobs. So in Illinois you had to be an insurance agent to do some of the work. Others are Virginia you had to be a licensed embalmed to work as a funeral director. Always make sure you know who you are trusting for death care.
I wanted to be a PA in pathology, but I’m already 50, having only become a RN in 2019, so I’m too old. Maybe next life - after I’m examined by a ME. Thanks to all the pathology teams who do great work. It’s an important responsibility and should be regarded by the teams as such. PS: why Dr Gill’s arms so skinny?! Maybe it’s just the camera angle.
First of all being a nurse is an awesome profession. Thank you for doing that. second of all. it’s never too late. to go back to school. being a nurse, however. is good enough. If your dreams are to be a pathologist, however. You should go back to school.
Isn't this quite the eye opener?? I had actually only realized that not every coroner was not a Doctor when the recent Idaho College Murders happened, as their coroner isn't a Doctor. Of course those coroner's that aren't physicians don't actually perform there autopsy. But they're still the one who ultimately signs the cause of death and conducts the death "INVESTIGATION". I definitely think there needs to be some oversight on something SO DRASTICALLY IMPORTANT!! Theres needs to be more continuity for sure!!
The dude needs to find some clothes that fit! Seriously though, what is with the roled up sleeves? Does he think his arms will hrow if exposed to the light of day?😂
Incredible documentary, I had no idea about the lack of regulation of forensic pathologists around the country. This is news to me and Frontline always does a great job!
John Oliver covered this as well. It's a great episode. This is not uncommon. This is an issue in my county. No one drowns in my county. All accidental drownings and overdoses. Nothing to see here folks.
In MY state of all places!!🙄🙄 Embarrassing actually🙄........ The county I live in has an actual forensic pathologist that is elected... I know this bc he did my 46 y.o. husbands autopsy... 😔😢💔
Explains a lot about how some of these examiners get things entirely wrong and you need a second opinion. Once again Frontline hits it out of the park.
@@Pink_143_6 wow thank you! And nah, I didn’t have the jails there in mind. I just think MA has some of the most unique, strangest names for their towns and Rhode Island as well and I just was thinking about Worcestershire sauce and how hard it is for people to pronounce it. Lol. I was on RU-vid under a different name for years but wanted a fresh start and kept trying to think of usernames that would stand out. It’s also cause I was born not too far from Boston myself and lived in New England for several years so there’s that. I was recently back and all the memories came back especially of places like Swampscott, Revere, Winthrop, Salem, and Somerville. I still got family up there too. Go figure.
Think about the "experts" that testify at trials who later were found to not have any real experience or supporting wrong theories with bad science like the fire experts!
I agree, it's an outdated position. The office comes from Medieval England where a coroner was a local county official whose primary duty was to protect the financial interest of the Crown in criminal proceedings. To make matters worse, not all Coroners are elected. Some are appointed! Some coroners hold office by virtue of holding another office. Like in Nebraska, a county's district attorney is also the county's coroner. In Louisiana, coroners are also sometimes involved in the determination of mental illness of living persons in the case of a crime, and may I remind you that most coroners in Louisiana aren't forensic pathologists OR psychiatrists. Most are general practice, emergency medicine, etc. You might get lucky and have one who's a general surgeon. But even then, the deputy coroner can still be someone like a funeral director!
This is a huge issue. I have been screaming about this FOREVER. The coroner in my county is the elected District Attorney. When I saw this, I thought it was a mistake on the website. So the person elected to keep the violent crime rates low is also the person who decides if a death is suspicious and gets investigated AND then if or how a case would move forward. He either has to produce charging documents or take a case to the grand jury. I don't think anyone has been murdered, unless it's made front page news, since I was a kid. Just a lot of accidents. It's gross. I tell people don't get murdered here. Cross the county line. They have a medical examiner and investigate deaths.
This report flabbergasts me. I am a retired nurse of 50 years. I never knew that medical forensic exams did not have to be performed by highly qualified and licensed personnel. I pray that this Frontline eye-opener will cause major national changes and requirements in the investigations of death.
It's much much worse than just bad forensics. Some people are not even examined because the coroner's are not qualified or have conflicts of interest so they immediately determine there's nothing to see here. It's a broken, disgusting, shameful system.
This documentary is 12 years old. The issue of elected officials with no medical background performing autopsies still happens everywhere, every day. It does not appear to be a priority.
I bumped into her in a tiny little hospital in Washington State, near Canada. Her husband was a physician there. I had to look two or three times, and she caught me looking and just said “Yeah it’s me” 🤣
As always Frontline posts an accurate documentary. As a former Healthcare worker this footage isn't disturbing. When you work in a Large Trauma 1 Hospital you see it all. I appreciate the warning as others may be affected. I've gained new knowledge after watching this doc. My dream is to make documentaries. Frontline produces greatness!!!
Well, I’m a retired LEO and firefighter, and boy did I learn from this. Our system is definitely broken and just makes me sick of the corruption I’ve seen in this. Just very sad…….
If you are a retired cop then you know how this works. You show up to a death call, and the coroner looks at the body, snaps a few pics and calls it a heart attack. If they even show up. Where I live, I pick up for the coroners office. I'm a funeral director and we contract our cooler and pick up service to the coroners office. Ones county I pick up in, the coroner hasn't been out to a death call in 5 years. He's like 90 years old and lets the police tell him how they died. Cops don't want to touch bodies. Cops aren't looking at them. They say "looks like a heart attack to me" if there isn't anything obvious. And that's what it becomes on the death cert. I could stab someone in the back, lie them in the road, roll over them a couple times and the cops would call it a hit and run. Call the coroner and that's what goes on the death cert. Its insane.
You are correct, corrupt cops, corrupt sherifs corrupt judges(x1000) corruption in every part of our society. It’s sickening, just look at that so called case against Trump, so much corruption the Supreme Court is calling the criminal democrats out.
Fascinating...and yet horrifying...depending on the coroner and outcome. Thank you for your difficult and brilliant work...forensic scientists and Frontline.
Our age has reached a conclusion in the wake of arriving at its zenith. The downturn and financial exchange crashes are influencing everything, not simply FTX and 401Ks. My retirement values portfolio, at $750K, is bleeding cash. I'm continually losing because of expansion. This world will disintegrate under its authoritarian rulers, similarly as. Assuming you are contemplating resigning yet are concerned that your annuity won't take care of the increasing expense of living, I am sorry. All over the planet, there are poor administrative, monetary, and energy approaches as well as awful international strategies.
We read news in the media that doom and gloom is coming and we just accept it, doom and gloom doesn’t always have to be coming, I’ve read numerous success stories of people that are pulling off tremendous gains of up to $250K within weeks in this crazy market and I just want to learn how to achieve such figures.
It all relies on your strategy and your willingness to stick with it, and the stock may fall further, but if you are a pro, making significant profits on this downtrend should not be a problem.
@Randy Pats How to find a creative FA, I buy the idea of using their services, it's a shame stock market collapses have become a custom for stocks lately
And you just know he probably terrorized pregnant women, some of the most vulnerable people in society. Even under the best circumstances today with no malice giving birth is often traumatic. I can't imagine what that doctor was allowed to get away with back in his early career as an OB/GYN.
I first saw this documentary in an anthropology class about 5 or so years ago. It changed my life, and the entire trajectory of my college education. Thank you.
Here in Australia it is a very different story thank goodness! As I love my craft (forensic psychology, criminology, forensic pathology) our credentials are gone over with a fine tooth comb. I can not believe something has not been done! It is absolutely ridiculous and disturbing.
Death is the one area of life people naturally prefer to not think about. But as a Baby Boomer, I'm cognizant of the fact that the person who will one day handle my remains has already been born and probably is now working in that necessary profession. Pretty sobering, and it makes me appreciate each day I'm above ground. Life is a gift one should never take for granted. And it's fleeting. Everything, though, is ephemeral, temporary. And the child conceived today most likely will be gone in 100 years or less. 👍👍👍
"And the child conceived today most likely will be gone in 100 years or less" Is that Nihilist outlook why your generation has caused so much destruction and misery? I believe the country, and therefore the world as a whole will balance itself and heal once the Boomer scourge is completely extinct in the next few years, God willing.
@@ctrl8337Wars have been going on since beginning of recorded history. Boomers tried to change things but too much money to be made from misery. Usually in God's name!
My youngest sibling died at age 31 at home so in our state an autopsy was mandatory. In life, she was 5'4". In death, she was 5'7". SMH ...bones don't grow 3 inches after you die
That’s interesting because when my father died, I remember thinking how odd it was that his body looked tall again. He was 6’ 3” most of my life, but had shrunken and become a bit hunched by the time he died at 86 years old.
Im gonna have to say that I feel it's quite possible. The fact is that more than likely, no one really knew her EXACT height. And when laying down and kind of pulling on a body to straighten them out to measure, may just make them a bit longer. And taking all things into consideration.... I think it could also depend upon the rigor of the body also. If its in a state of relaxation.... all the muscles possibly being looser than normal could also make a person longer. So all in all... between a person never really having an EXACT measurement of their height. And possibly the medical examiner not making a 100% spot on measurement among the other things I mentioned.... I don't think a couple / few inches is probably that abnormal. Additionally.... I'd also like to say how sorry I am for the loss of your sister. That's absolutely horrible! I can't even begin to imagine you and your family's sorrow and pain. Im so so sorry.
I think that when you’re laying down and your feet are pointing vs flat when you stand adds inches. Like the entire foot size and that can be 7.5 or whatever
I had no idea this was going on. It's literally insane what these incompetent people are allowed to do with our loved ones. I wonder what the state of affairs is now 10 years later. I hope the federal government has put a stop to this and actually provided the needed funding for legitimate medical pathologists.
All religious organizations should be required to pay: federal, state, County and property taxes. They should be required to do bookkeeping. What do they spend their money on: lawyers, lobbyists, campaign donations, payments for lawsuits--pedophile priests and their accomplices, travel, life insurance, retirement, building and maintenance, vacations, landscaping, building insurance, stock markets, health care for themselves, advertising, landscaping, vehicles--food and shelter for themselves, and such?
@@dianahill5116What gives you the right to decide that. Those donations go to food banks, church services and various other important projects for the church and community. Autopsies are against our faith we think these people are just as evil as the killer.
This is pretty scandalous ❤️ it. The fact that we live in such a crazy society, with litigation and incarceration, and you can’t get a proper autopsy? The fact that my manicure might be more well regulated than my eventual cause of death? I guess I’m not surprised, just may be a bit disappointed. Wonderful documentary, thank you Mr. Bergman! Loved The Insider 🙏✌️
That first case, the wife in the water, face down. It takes a tremendous amount of internal fortitude to drown one’s self, I would think it’s difficult, because of the mind and body’s reflexes naturally trying to prevent it.
Right, I find it crazy that they just glossed over that. I’d be interested to hear more details because with the information we are given, I’d think it’s more likely she was drowned.
You have no idea what gruesome ways determined or very mentally ill people have taken their lives. At the ward I was staying a guy in secluded padded cell took his life by smashing his head over 300+ times. They didn't think it was possible due to the heavy padding... People eviscerate themselves with glass. She could've drank or taken something for courage as many of people who are to take their lives do. Some of us do it sober and feel a sense of relief instead of pain, that we remember if medical intervention comes in time. Please speak not of subject so heavy, that still weights on this family.
I almost died like Miss Cain. I was a nurse during covid and came down with it bad one day. The ER didnt believe me and had security escort me out the front door. Ive had asthma my whole life and was refused a breathing treatment or any treatment at all. In my chart they called it “anxiety”. It lasted seven days. I feel for her family and hope they win against this tyranny.
@@ifyouonlyk6556 maybe because she didn’t get vented. I was taken in to Mayo Clinic with blue lips at deaths door with Covid. In icu for 9 weeks but not vented. They Absolutely saved my life. I’m still on oxygen over a year later, but I am here ❤
They treated my daughter the same way. Wrote "anxiety" and gave her antibiotics. She had long COVID also, and it took from February to September to get her back to work and regular life again.
When five point restraints are used ; in Virginia a patient ( by law ) must be monitored every twenty minutes by a doctor or nurse. We are losing are doctors and especially are nurses faster than you can blink an eye . I've seen 14 year old patients in restraints for hours without being check on. It's a nightmare to watch and proven not to work. I ended up having to be the nurse. If people only knew the patient abuse that I have witnessed they would cry. I'm so sorry Mike.
@@isaidwtfover Unfortunately, too few care anymore about spelling and grammar. I could spend all day every day finding errors, although when pointing them out in the past I’ve been called a spelling Nazi and worse. Now I just shake my head and raise my eyebrows, just not at the same time. 😉
“Dead people don’t vote or I’d be elected governor or president.” What a total narcissist, remember when he said, “I’m not a politician…”, of course he is, and so he lies about whatever he has to so he can keep his bosses happy. These unqualified coroners are a cancer in our justice system and we need to unseat all of them.
This re-hiring of a failed coroner repeatedly after moving him around reminds me of the catholic church's handling of abusive priest's. One exception, no witness!
He was an OB/GYN beforehand, you just know he was probably terrorizing his vulnerable pregnant patients. At the very best case, condescending badly down to them, or not listening to their concerns. The job is hard enough with doctors who have the best intentions!
Wow, that clown car of the incompetent coroners. Every time they spoke they just dug their hole deeper. This is why lawyers won't let guys like that go on the stand.
Unbelievably sad 💔 we all deserve so much more in life and even more in death. My heart broke for the 80 yr old man who was beaten to death, laid to rest, and then exhumed. I’m glad that the person responsible for his death was sentenced to life ! Thank you to the person who spoke up. Who knows how many people were saved from that monster.
In Louisiana the coroner in every parish is a medical doctor but they have "Assistant Coroner's" (usually a nurse) that actually goes out to do the duties on behalf of the coroner. Working in EMS for 20 years, I've only questioned 1 of them and that was because she had no idea how to pull blood from the heart (for alcohol/drug testing) that is standard procedure for DOA vehicle accidents.
I worked in Autopsy while getting my Clinical Scientist degree. We went to scenes that were horrible. Doing the children and babies is the worst. I would love this job. I found I could show dignity to the physical body I worked on, and have a dark wicked sense of humor. Death is part of Life. We have divorced ourselves from death. Because it can be uncomfortable. Start having those conversations. I have cancer and I found this book called.... I am dead, now what? Excellent and easy to follow directions for your family and friends. The great common transition.
@@moniqueengleman873 Read Caitlin (Ask a Mortician) book,it's great! Also, fascinating lives of cadavers (loose translation). But... I'd rather have people like You live longer,so beat that bastard, will ya? 💖🤞
When that poor father, Mike Macelli, was recounting the removal of his daughter's life support, he said "... it took 5 minutes for her heart to stop". What he was thinking and wanted to say was... 'It took a lifetime, forever, an eternity for my sweet, sweet babies heart to stop killing my soul at the same time'. That poor man losing his daughter in such a miserable needless way is criminal.
It's absolute torture having to take a child off life support and watch them fade. I myself found myself at only 28yrs old in this situation 4yrs ago with my daughter Journey, nothing I'd wish on my worst enemy
@Kayla Guinn I wish saying "I'm sorry" was even close to expressing deep sympathy over both your loss and the horrific ordeal of what you've been through. The decision you made is the hardest thing any parent will ever be asked to make. You made it and survived... I'm proud that you came through and hope you continue to heal & prosper. Best of luck to you and your entire family! Tari
When a patient gets taken off a vent, they're supposed to get a high dose of Morphine pushed into their I.V. to stop the heart and lungs, so the patient doesn't suffer as their breathing decreases. 5 minutes is a long time. Poor little children. 😢
That poor woman was killed like George Floyd without the cameras. She suffocated to death, probably wishing for someone to save her. What a horror show.
Although I’ve known about this issue for a number of years now, it really shocked me that in the richest, most powerful country on earth, medical examinations are done by elected officials that are sometimes blind, and have no medical qualifications to speak of and or arrests for fraud, drunk, driving, and fuck you plethora of other crimes😅
This was a great documentary! And so good for that person that made the anonymous phone call in regards to the senior citizen that passed away in the senior living home. Absolutely awesome that they did the right thing
You are right wishing that “everybody see this documentary” because then, people will vote for the right person. This was so disturbing especially the cynicism of that Cornel (looking like L Graham) when saying “death people do not vote”. 😮
It's interesting, the original coroner's in NY were elected officials who were more beholden to their political party than medical science. If I remember correctly, one coroner was a fire fighter, not a doctor. It seems to me that the Louisiana coroner has more in common with a weasel than a medical examiner.
I like this lady doctor Fierro, very knowledgeable but yet humble with a good sense of humour. Thanks to all doctor’s autopsy to help the dead to be able to tell their real reason for their death. 🙏🙏
Interesting how he said we “peddle the truth” - not realizing “peddle” means sell. You don’t need to sell the truth. All these unqualified coroners are violating people’s constitutional right to justice. There should be federal standards.
That guy is a complete jacka$$ who sounds like he obviously does not give a hoot about much OR what anyone says about him. I thought that an odd statement myself. THEN he says he couldn’t do this job without his pathologists. Well then step down sir. You’re completely incompetent!
The Boys on the Track case in Arkansas, that was an example of either a corrupt or just plain dumb forensic pathologist. He concluded the 2 boys smoked so much weed that they passed out on train tracks and got ran over by a train. Well a 2nd autopsy found one of the boys had blunt for trauma and the other boy got shot. The whole case is just wild!!
Oh my gosh yes!! My theory is when those boys were goofing around in the woods, they saw Bill Clinton’s cocaine drops. He and George Bush Sr. were both involved with those drops. There’s a book that’s been written about those boys who lost their lives. It’s titled The Boys On The Track. It’s sold on Amazon. I feel so bad for their parents. I watched a video about one of their moms on RU-vid and how she had to fight to get the truth. Bill Clinton and Bush were sending weapons in exchange for cocaine drops.
Dr Sexton in SC was an excellent pathologist. He was very thorough and knew what he was doing. He taught me a lot when I was training as a Paramedic. Very good man.
My brother was 29 and found hanging dead in his front yard…an autopsy said suicide… we did not believe this but had no options… 10 yrs later we found out from an unidentified police officer that he was murdered by drug cartels… the undercover agents would have been put in a discovered and dangerous situation if the truth had come out… so his 6 and 4 yo sons were forever ruined… they are grown men now addicted to drugs and serving time in prison and jails from the death of their father… it’s very sad…😢😢😢😢
I’m an EMT and a police officer, and I’ve (tried) to comfort many dead victims I was attending to by talking to them, because I care about them even though they are no longer there. There’s nothing like trying to help someone who has already gone. It’s heartbreaking.
That’s awesome that you’re so caring even though they might not be there to thank you I am sure that they are thankful not everybody can do your job I’m glad it’s somebody like you and not some incompetent person like in this show.
I'm a funeral director who also picks up bodies for the coroners office. And let me be the first to tell you that in the 3 different counties I work, these people know nothing. They have missed so many things it's crazy. Had one guy on my table where they said he died of a heart attack. But on the back of his head was a small but deep laceration. Almost looked like a claw hammer. I brought it up to the coroners office and they were like "he must have fell and hit his head". Did he fall from a second story onto a hammer? Because this cut went almost through the skull. They missed it completely and didn't want to admit they made a mistake. Another girl on my table was declared to have a stroke yet I found a bullethole in her nose. I've seen bulletholes that they call "cancer blowouts". One county I work,, the coroner is like 90 years old. in 8 years I've worked here, he has never once come out to call a death. The cops call him and tell him what it looks like and that's what he writes on the death cert. You could literally beat someone to death with a bat, put them in your car, take them up the road, and roll over their body a couple times and you would get away with murder. Because the cops will say "he got hit by a car". And the coroner would say "he got hit by a car". If we show up at a decomp (body that's been dead in a house a while), the coroners office does nothing but tag and bag. Take maybe two or three pics and just want to get out of there. Never take the clothes off to look at the body. Never investigate anything. Just a few pics of the body on the ground, bag 'em and off to the crematory. It is wild stuff. I always thought it would be like impossible to get away with killing someone. I'm here to tell you that in a lot of areas of this country, it would be extremely easy. And I'm sure there are countless people walking around who have gotten away with murder.
My daughter died unattended. No sexual assault or exam done. I asked the examiner why not. He said it was not needed. Yes it is needed. We still have no idea what happened. No excuse for this action.
