Ian Hislop talks facts and he’s isn’t afraid of calling out the people who are culpable for this fraud and fiasco. This shows how important and how vital journalism is in society.
IAN HISLOP. IS RIGHT !!!! Fujitsu apologies . hoo, that's. OK then.. But apologies won't pay the bills and the debts. Get the corporate cheque book out and start paying them back..NOW!!!!
Yeah. But he is a tosser on TV. He doesn't need to interrupt the MPs - they can condemn themselves. That said, I've subscribed to the Eye for over 20 years and followed this case with bafflement. Jess Phillips says she's had several cases over the years. Hislop's question should be - when have you raised this in Parliament?
Private Eye has been calling truth to power my entire life. It’s the scourge of politicians but is less powerful and has less impact in the age of social media. Maybe that’s why Ian Hislop is so animated. He’s been banging this drum for more than 10 years and only now that ITV has blown a massive hole open on the story is he getting a platform on it. There’s 10 years of frustration coming out here.
@@paulrichards6894, he went to public school and had (I believe) wealthy parents. His school would have forced religion on his cohort, just like crap school dinners. A very good education and a clever mind -- you can't get much better than that.
Private Eye is such a valuable champion of free speech. Kudos to the lady at Computer Weekly who first had the guts to expose this monstrous injustice.
She did that in 2009 and the system came up in 1999..... The Computer Weekly was at this case in years because they did NOT get any info on it from Post Office, Horizon and Fujitsu...... they all try to cover up!!
I don’t know how Ian keeps sane. He knows the truth on so many scandals and still looks and sounds so normal. He is a national asset. If only he had real power to do something.
I can understand your thoughts. I had to give up reading Private Eye, because the blatant rampant corruption at all levels of business and finance and politics was just making me so angry, it made me feel ill.
Erm, as John says, Panorama exposed this a couple of years back. The real problem is that many among ‘the voting public’ don’t take notice until it’s in a drama. People need to stop relying solely on social media for their ‘news’ and start watching the broadcasters (who do present what’s going on) and ‘decent’ newspapers.
No Hislop only yelled at Tories for this Post Office scandal despite all the prosecutions in 2000s being aggressively done by Labour. Both parties acted like scum but LABOUR caused this travesty.. What leftist media bias of Hislop and the rest to ignore Labour was in power in 2000s and pickin and running prosecutors.. It's like blaming Reagan for Vietnam, off by a decade.
A system can't be either corrupt or dishonest. The people with the power to do the right thing are corrupt and dishonest. If it were up to them, they'd rip The System down - because that only ever benefits people like them and their donors.
he was sued succesfully by Robert Maxwell for libel and when he left the court someone asked him how he felt he said: "i had to write a fat check for a fat czech!!" legend..
7:27 - Ian absolutely nails it here. The post office staff who were prosecuted were given no presumption of innocence, but the Post Office investigators, head office staff, and Fujitsu were believed without question.
Labour government where trying to sell off Royal Mail and post office was part of it. Union fought back so they attacked any way they could. They also got paid by stealing the post masters money from them. now you know why the post office is still tax payer owned and Royal Mail is not. The business tycoons did not what to bay out after the court cases. Don’t get me started on the contracts and sell offs in the NHS new labour did. Blair ended the UK, the rest just cashed in
The victims deserve damages, the tax payer deserves punitive damages from Fujitsu back into their coffers, the victims deserve full compensation on top of damages. A criminal investigation needs to take place. The money was stolen, which is a fact established by law. Who got away with that fortune?
2 PARTY SYSTEM, FIRST PAST THE POST POLITICIAL SYSTEM IS NOT DEMOCRATIC AT ALL PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION IS A MUST. ASQ. ASQ. ASQ. ANTI STATUS QUO. STARTING IN LIVERPOOL. David Baxter 😊
I truly admire Ian Hislop, he’s been chipping away at the ridiculous and downright corrupt way that this country is governed for decades and he shows no signs of stopping. Private eye is just about the only publication that informs the public about their government. Many attempts have been made to silence PE and yet it’s still as dogged and hilarious as ever. Long may he reign.
Well done Ian, this type of thing should never ever happen again those at the top should not automatically be believed, the arrogant attitude of post office management and their contempt for postmasters should lead to charges against them
yes - it seems they have power with no responsibility. post office is some kind of rogue gangster outfit. beyond belief really. it needs to be shut down. it must be rotten to the core.
@@sordel5866 He isn’t a serious journalist. He always just laughs or stutters or mumbles without ever saying anything of use breaking the flow of in this case Ian Hislop telling it like it is.
Tony Blair did get a massive cash payment from Fujitsu for signing off on the project. Can somebody please prosecute Blair and confiscate all his loot ??
Innocent people were sent to prison, committed suicide and had their names dragged through the mud, the compensation for that is accountability of those responsible 😐
I appreciate Hislop here so much. We disagree about a couple important things, but literally no other public figure in the UK is willing to speak plainly about this. Peston's persistent attempt to relabel theft and perjury and conspiracy, largely unsuccessful in the face of Hislop's passion and direct knowledge, is simply one more embodimentnof the toxic classism which drove this corruption and its coverup. Either rich people follow the same laws as everyone else, or they don't. If not, and of course we already know this is the answer, then the judicial system and legal systems MUST change, MUST be brought in line with the interests of the non rich. If they are incapable of being reformed, then tell me... in what universe should the non rich obey properrty laws and not simply reverse the generational theft of our labour?
@@garynicholls1448I think his ‘TL;DR’ is that all laws should apply equally to all, regardless of status, be it financial or otherwise. Which I don’t think anyone would seriously argue with if they wanted to enjoy the benefits of an equable society. He’s not coming for your premium bonds.
We suddenly "LOST" our sub postmaster, Martin, and all we knew was he had gone BUT not for medical reasons, he was a type 2 Diabetic. I heard he passed away not long afterwards. Q. How are the people who created this going to pay, NOT just financially. We need Fujitsu Senior Managers (and Ex) charged with Computer Fraud, Fraud, Theft from Sub Postmasters, Perverting the Course of Justice, and Assault. The same charges to the PO Investigators and ALL managers above them. THIS IS SICK. The DPP, CPO and Police also need to pay. REMOVAL OF PENSIONS, both State and Company/Private should also occur.
The people who were guilty of this fraud do not care at all. "So what, I ruined someone's life... I don't care. They're not MY family so I don't give a stuff. As long as I'm sitting pretty everyone else can go and 'F' themselves." Selfishness, greed and an utter lack of morality will be our collective undoing.
Well done Ian. Keep on telling it as it is, because the vast majority of people do not have the opportunity to do so. I am looking forward to the next issue Ian Hislop gets his teeth into. The Conservative governments timing of trying to fix the terrible criminalisation of sub-postmasters is so bloody typical. "Lets give the public a positive before the next election." Scumbags!
Ian seems to be the only person who is asking the obvious follow up question. Where is the money, who stole it, when is there going to be am investigation into this? The bug was not an accounting error, the bug was that people at post office head office and at Fujitsu had access to sub post office accounting pages and their business accounts. Money went missing, that is financial crime, not just incompetence or negligence.
Brilliant verbal dexterity by Ian Hislop to reinforce his points. I thought his attack on the comment "claims to like". It's a great pity we don't have politicians of the calibre of Ian in Parliament to sort out the country's problems. No waffle, flip-flopping, just action packed facts!
@TerribleFire couldn't agree more. He showed how arrogant he was when he couldn't say "I'm Sorry" to that postmistress who was at the inquiry. What an ignorant bastard
Private Eye has been consistently pushing for justice for the victims of the corruption by the main players.PE's tenacity has been ongoing for at least two decades. My only subscription is for this magazine. I support Ian H because I believe in him and his team. We need PE's type of journalism.
Good to see everyone, except Ian, laughing about this. If people remember one thing about this it's that parties of all colours think this is amusing. The whole scandal transcends parties and just demonstrates that they're all only interested in what they can get from the trough.
Why is it that the main journals in the U.K. have avoided this issue for years and years ? Thanks to Private Eye and Ian Hislop, the truth of the matter finally moved beyond computing journals.
What a sad mess. It’s obvious that someone at the PO knew something was up - with the “you are the only complainant” line - but why did they do that? As with any big software package, it would need updates, which is no big deal and is fairly easy to implement. Why wasn’t that done when the problem was revealed? Who stood to make money by NOT fixing this problem?
Well, Fujitsu was saying there was nothing wrong with the software, and it would have cost a lot of money, possibly £ millions, to hire lots of IT consultants to prove the software was causing trouble, as it wasn't everybody, as far as I can see, only 10% - 15% of users being unlucky enough to have it malfunction. So they just blamed it on the postmasters, and recovered the missing money from them by ruining their lives, as the simplest and cheapest method of dealing with it. And once they had started on this course, they were on a roller coaster they couldn't get off without dire consequences for them. So on it rolled,
@@edeledeledel5490 It's very suspect that only 15% of post offices had significant errors in the typical business as usual functions of the system. However continuous improvement is normal for any large system, especially accounting, since managers are terrified of Audit Findings against the system and those who operate it. Being a Public Sector organisation may have some impact on the Audit that was required. You'd imagine that was at least what a commercial enterprise must do, but I'm not confident of that. How could a system with significant faults not have Audit Findings if that were done correctly. How would it not be an Audit Finding that there were 980 fraud investigations in progress... You would certainly expect that an IT company like Fujitsu has a large number of specialists doing testing and that every major release of the software would only be deployed after exhaustive testing. Thus Post Office would only accept the release following acceptance of the Test Report that shows the scope and results of testing. Anything less is negligent application management (ITIL). For an application of such critical function for the Post Office best practice is Automated Testing which makes it cost effective to do wide and deep testing of the business functions largely untouched by human hands. Thus credibility and repeatability is assured at best value. Building and enhancing that test set is standard best practice so should not be in question for a critical application.
Ever since the government gave in to the bankers there’s has been a culture of avoidance and of getting away with criminal actions. This is done by endless enquiries and procrastination
Did no one just say "how the hell could there be 980 crooks in the post office at that level" several dozen yes but that number in itself should have had people wondering
10:01 All of them should be stripped of their bonuses. The problem for the Tories is that they themselves have a long history of not calling out failure and corruption in their own ranks and a long history of paying unjustified pensions, severance payments and giving out gongs that are not deserved. One example, the Liz Truss severance pay, pension and awards list was a corruption of public life in full view. That is why they did not want to call out the problems in the post office. If they get money back from Fujitsu, the media and public will then say “you have acted on Fujitsu, why can’t you do the same with the PPE scandal?” Big can of Tory worms.
Lets wait until the statutory inquiry, lets wait until the Court of Appeal judgments, lets wait until the High Court has ruled, lets wait until after the criminal trials, lets wait, lets wait lets wait. Waiting is so much better than giving redress for vicitims, or punishing perjurers or asking why the legal and parliamentary system so abjectly failed to protect ordinary people.
Great work Ian, totally agree holding the politicians to account. It is absolutely disgusting that it has taken so long to get sorted, when several challenges l levied in the early days should have been enough to question the integrity of the system... Get the post masters compensated now, they should all be recompensed to put them where they were should this had not happened plus compensation for the suffering they have endured
"I think we should give her her CBE back then publically strip her of it". If he thought he could cosy up to Hislop by saying something that sounded like a line from Brass Eye , he was mistaken.
Two politicians from opposing parties displaying utter pathetic incompetence. It takes the razor sharp comments of Ian Hislop to expose their failings, yet they still procrastinate about the real causes of the Post Offices illegal actions. No wonder our Country is broken. We all know that those responsible will not be held to account, that Fujitsu will walk away with pocket full of taxpayers money. The old saying of “Nothing to see here, move along please”
My father was a Post Master in Canada and when I think that a good man like him could have been prosecuted like this if it happened in Canada it makes my blood boil.
Totally given up on politicians, and the corrupt system they all now represent...But now decided to subscribe to Private eye. I'm a long admirer and occasional reader, but actually now I think they're more important than ever.
Hislop is not given to ranting. Even this is not a rant. But he does get a point across. I find Peston wearisome and a little too pleased with himself... But the presence of Hislop makes this watchable.
Well done Ian Hislop totally agree, please keep this disgraceful, appalling, upsetting story at the forefront of the tv media / newspapers/ online until all post masters/ mistresses get their full generous compensation.
How long will we wait for the people responsible to go to prison? Proper compensation for victims is one thing but justice dictates that the people who either buried evidence or refused to properly do their jobs, need to be sent to prison
I don't even live in a country with Common Law justice system... But each time I see any of this cases my blood starts to boil, the amount of not only Incompetency but utter liars whiling to destroy hones people's lives is horrendously too much, even for me, someone who escaped a communist country that was used to see al kind of abuses from the government... W. T. F.???
Jake Berry’s face during Hislop’s rant says it all. Doesn’t care about the mendacious corruption he’s talking about, just that Ian isn’t comporting himself in a seemly manner. These tories are the worst
@@MrChiddler Ok I'll re-phrase it. " Many people who came into contact with Savile knew about his actions." For example I heard that nurses at Stoke Mandeville hospital complained about him, but it fell on deaf ears.
@@andrewoliver8930 which is very very different to ‘everyone’, isn’t it? There were a lot of rumours but very few people knew any facts. I also think that most people don’t grasp that Savile last worked for the BBC in about 1992. All those that might have known sonething concrete are long gone from the BBC and most are dead.
Just like the MP expenses scandal, (which was an open secret in Westminster), that took an outside agency (in this case an ITV drama) to get the establishment to respond. We look like a banana republic.
MP expenses, Partygate, PPE scandal, Post Office scandal, cost of living crisis, Thames Water, pollution, the many by-elections because of misconduct… and most of us are just going to lie down and take it.
They're still using this broken software too from what I understand. They were offered a version of it for the NHS a few years ago and they told them to jog on because it isn't fit for purpose.
The British public are absolutely fucking livid over this! We're raging and our politicians are shitting themselves right now long may it continue I say
Well done to Hislop. Absolutely right to hold people to account for what they say immediately upon it being said. There are far too many who say whatever comes to their heads without having any idea of the validity of the statement being made. Bravo to Hislop!
Ian Hislop should be appointed High Inquisitor. Scrap PMQ’s altogether and have Ian brought into Parliament once a week to ask questions of the PM live on TV for one hour. They would never let it happen.
Robert Peston there being the eternal pain in the backside that he's always been when a situation hasn't been all about him for at least ten seconds. He should've just taken the slap on the wrists for going over time. Ian was going on the rant of the century.
"There's an enquiry". That's a relief..................A bit like the Westminster Paedo Ring enquiry that had the can kicked so long down the road that people forgot about it being swept under the rug?
One can only wish , in a Briton of power and privilege that is beyond truth , with a media that defends the vile in society, not the public, we have been in a spiral of corruption, with the corrupt in control.
If you ‘belong’ to a certain class in the UK you are given the presumption of innocence. If you don’t belong or associate with people of this privileged class you are guilty as charged. It’s just the way it is in the stratified UK society.
Greed, Ignorance and Moral deficiency can be found in management generally where they are not led correctly on Vision and Values. I see no evidence that's limited to Post Office Counters rather it's a general human behaviour problem. Is that limited to any 'class', no not really. The Peter principle in action.
Love Ian Hislop's point that although Ed Davies is being held responsible at the start of the scandal, as additional facts came out, he was followed by 12 years Tory ministers in the same role.
