I grew up in Russia and studied sociology at a Russian university and OMG this video is SO GOOD. Not only did you use some awesome sources for research, you dug into Russian modern history in its insane complexity masterfully. As someone who has lived through a lot of it first hand, I am thoroughly impressed and can't wait for the next chapter. In the meantime I'll definitely share this video with my American friends. Thank you ❤️

18:00 My grandad was in Moscow during this event, and he told me this: the only reason Yeltsin got away with dissolving the parliament and then bombing it is because this hapenned so fast, most of the Russian people haven't even knew about it untill it was over. In fact, a day before the bombing there was an armed attempt by the parliament's communists to hijack a TV station and make a public broadcast to rally around the people to support them, but it was stopped by the Yeltsin's forces. My grandad was doing lectures in one of the Moscow's universities, and there were several communists among his students who were eager to go and assist the hijackers the moment they learned about it, but were stopped by their friends who were afraid this will get them killed. As my grandad said: "If social media existed back then, there would have been a civil war in 1993".

I remember first learning about that events when I was just a kid. Neither liberal (oppositional) or conservative media really brought them up back then (and they don’t do it now). But I found a lot of footage online… That videos gave me strong 1930’ Germany vibes and were basically the first step for me becoming a communist sympathiser

I live in Russia and want to say thank you for this video. I might make russian subtitles if I'll have the time. The saddest thing for me is that Putin does have some genuine support in people: while some are made to vote and participate in pro-goverment "meetings" by their workplace, some are thinking of Putin as bringer of stability. 90s were really bad here and people think Putin saved them, when in reality, just as this video tells, the 90s crisis happened because of Yeltsin's and now Putin's regime. Edit: grammar

Back when I was in college I took Russian for my foreign language, this was during the 2016 election and my Russian teacher (who was actually from Russia btw) didn't really understand elections but told our class "I don't know why you guys think you can change any of that anyway". At the time her pessimism struck me as strange but as I got older and learned more about Russia, the Soviet Union, and the ACTUAL system of the USA I get it now.

Great Video. Contributing to the Imitation Democracy observation, I myself previously have observed that the modern russian state and intellegentsia in certain ways try to mirror the west and the US, and argue on common arguments and points. Most recently for example, allegations of Ukraine developing their own bio-/nuclear weapon programme ala Iraq situation, invading x country for "freeing" people from oppression, and much more political, economical destabilization and meddling than in soviet times. I wish I could be more specific, but I have not taken note of my observations, and I'm def just talking out of memory here. One thing concerning soviet nostalgia in modern day russia, it very quickly becomes obvious from watching soviet documentaries produced in russia, as well as museums and memorials, that the russian state weaponizes soviet nostalgia only in specific ways, especially praising it's military, cultural and world power prowess, more than it's other successes in politics, economics, theory etc. Often they will and can mention the atrocities commited by the soviet government or the terrible inefficiency and oppresion of communism they were under, but that they were still so powerful and glorious because the russian nation was still under it and holding it together or something along those lines. Previous chants of success thanks to the hard work, suffering, unity and working together of all the soviet people became chants of success thanks to the russian people keeping the system alive.

Good video. In fact damn near-perfect. I'm glad someone actually talked about the farce that was the 1996 Russian presidential election, I've literally not seen a video on post-Soviet Russia even mentioning this, despite blatant US intervention. Incidentally, for all the faults with Western media, I do recall Channel 4 (I'm from the UK) talk about the shelling of Parliament the day Yeltsin died (It mostly was clips of him being drunk and I couldn't blame them since that was the material they got). Look forward to part 2. I expect to see clips of Clinton (and Bush for that matter) and Blair being all chummy with Putin!

@@1Dimee I've probably seen it already. It's not the only one - during the "Russiagate" scandal, I think it was a piece at the Atlantic that pointed out that the US is the business of election meddling and used Yeltsin's election as an example. I think the Time cover all but states that's what the US did anyway, and of course, presents it as unambiguously good.

Also, I really liked that you used Boris Kagarlistky's book as one of the sources for this video. The man introduced me to the world-system theory and Wallerstein. Also, Boris Kagarlitsky's book "A peripheral empire" is still relevant to understand more about Russia from the world-system theory framework (I am not sure that it was translated into English, tho).

@TrueDefectv

@@brokkoliomg6103 You basically imagine whole world as 1 cell of capitalist society, where “central” states are capitalists and “peripheral” ones are proletarians. It’s profitable for central states to maintain other states on the low technological level, so they (peripheral states) can produce only raw materials or goods with low added value and basically make no money in comparison to, for ex, European countries or the US, Japan, South Korea etc. Don’t know about any online-presentations. I cannot express ny gratitude enough. The amount of videos where RF and Putin are mischaracterized in the most ridiculous ways made me think that westerners can never be taught to spend at least a dozen minutes on researching a subject before making ridiculous claims on top of pre-existing propagandised misconceptions. RF is pretty bad, but it is at worst on par with USA (which is, ofc, inhumane levels of "bad", but still), and it is mostly USA's own doing - they wanted to make a capitalist hellhole here, and they succeeded.

@31:20 just a friendly tip 1Dime: maybe don't capitulate to neoliberalism yourself by stating the Dumas ran "very low deficits". It's bad language framing. To the monopoly issuer of the ruble a deficit/debt is a trivial concept, what really matters instead is full employment and price stability. The neolib/Dumas policy was "running very low currency refuelling/injections" (same as a low gov deficit, but better framing). No matter what the rate of change of prices, a growing population still needs a growing money supply in _real_ terms (unit purchasing power). If there is even a tiny +ve inflation rate + growing population, that implies the _nominal_ currency supply has to have a positive rate of increase, i.e., government net issues ruble, if real production is semi-stable.
