Thank you so much for the amazing informative videos. I feel many postdoc applicants,myself included, make the common mistakes you highlight in your videos or ignore fundamental must to do things you recommend and they fail to make the cut for the final shortlist and interview process. Please keep up with posting more videos 👍

Thank you so much for these amazing videos! Please if you are still looking for ideas for new videos, I am super interested to know how to do a presentation for a post-doc position when we are still in the middle of the 4th year, meaning with no publication as a result of our dissertation, and possibly just some results of our analyses...

Thank you so much. Great video and advices. As applicant for a postdoc fellow (not sure what is the difference with normal "postodoc" ) I am invited for a second interview to give a presentation of 45 min. During my first interview, the interviewee mentioned to me that the PI (Institute director ) is looking for analytic skills for his biotech industrry clients, though publications are not a required outcome from this postdoc position. My own objective is target an academic position, so publications matter to me. I am hesitant about this position. Maybe it is good for industry path deviation. I feel that postdocs are recruited for their thecnical skills. Do you think working in parallel for publishing methods/ tech papers would be feasible? I could imagine there is a lot of pressure and maybe no time will be allowed for writing publications in parallel. Just wondering your advice on that. thank you

Thank you so much for your information. I was wondering if our PhD project not follow same story, how we should prepare presentations? Are we lose our chance? How we should prepare ourselves about that? For example my first project is on Trp on neonatal pigs but then my next project is completely another amino acid and another goal?

Thank you for these wonderful and useful videos. I really appreciate your passion and effort in giving us advice. Currently, I have been given the chance to do a second interview from the lab of interest in front of PI and lab members (I already have done the first interview in which I briefly presented my Ph.D. works for 20minutes in front of PI). For the second interview, the PI wants me to give a 1hr talk about my Ph.D. works (similar to PhD dissertation). Since I have done two major projects in my graduate periods (co-first authors of those two projects), should I present all these works within a 1hr talk? or should I focus on one project and tell them the detailed research journey? Also, do you think it will be helpful if I use the last 5 minutes of my talk to propose the future plans/projects to the lab of interest?
@gradschooladvice9537
@gradschooladvice9537 2 года назад
How closely related are the projects? If they can fit under one umbrella, it may be worth discussing both. If not, I would present just one and let the audience know you’re only presenting one project but you have others not presenting. Either way is acceptable. I think it’s ok to give some highlights of what you think the next steps in the project should be even if you aren’t there any longer.

@@gradschooladvice9537 Thank you for the quick response. As you mentioned, the subjects of the two projects are slightly different. Rather than presenting all those works and confusing listeners, I should stick to one specific project and let them know I am presenting the one project. Once again, thank you :) Your advice really helps us a lot.

Thank you for the video...I have a postdoc interview with a 10-15 min presentation included....I have decided to have the slide sequence --> "About me followed by my PhD work and then How I would be a great fit to their lab". I was just confused with what the Title slide should say??? Could you please throw a light in the same ?
@gradschooladvice9537
@gradschooladvice9537 3 года назад
I would say your title slide should be something about your research you’re going to give. That’s the main bulk of your talk.

Hi. I'm glad to find this vedio. I'm currently applying for several postdoctoral positions and looking forward to get invited to the interviews. All of these projects are almost exactly what I have done in my MA which led to publishing three peer-reviewed papers along with collaboration in several projects. unfortunately, these postdoc jobs have no common area with my PhD thesis at all. I do have other qualifications as well. Do you think that I necessarily need to assign a part of the presentation to my PhD dissertation? How can I catch the attentions from my PhD dissertation and magnify the relative parts of my academic research? What's the best strategy for a candidate like me? Thank you
@gradschooladvice9537
@gradschooladvice9537 3 года назад
Great question. I think moving to a postdoc position doesn’t have to necessarily overlap with your dissertation work. In fact, I know more people that totally move to something new than stay in the same direct field. I would highlight lab skills you have that will translate.

Hi. I am very much glad to find your channel. I have invited for a postdoctoral interview on Wednesday. And i did my PhD in molecular diabetology. The PI asked me : “Please prepare to be able to show us Your recent work in a short presentation of 10-15min.” Since this is my 1st face to face interview, i would like to kindly ask you if you can give me an idea about my presentation. I had already prepared my ppt. I will briefly introduce myself and my background (in 1 slide), then i will talk about my main result related to main project of my phd study, and at the end 2-3 slid related to making connection between diabetes and panceratic cancer and why i want to continue my postdoctoral in panceratic cancer. What do you think? Is that good idea or you would suggest another style?
@gradschooladvice9537
@gradschooladvice9537 3 года назад
Good luck!!! The short talks are the hardest because it’s hard to condense so much information into a small presentation. I think your idea is perfect. Just make sure if the lab doesn’t directly work in your field to give adequate background. Hope you crush it!

Thank you for giving me confidence. They are also working in cellular signalings and finding biomarkers released by tumor cells in pancreatic cancer. I had read some of their papers and I think they are familiar with the basis of my experiment. But I will try to keep in my mind to explain shortly about mimicking diabetic conditions for our experiments. Cross your fingers for me 🤞🏻🌷

Hi. It's my pleasure to find your channel. I have been invited for an interview of postdoc position. My main research is different from the proposed project, but I have worked on small project relevant to that project. How can I show my ability to handle the project well? How can I prepare the best presentation to cover all topics? I'm ganna prepare a presentations contain 1. Introduce myself and my main research 2. PhD dissertation ( about 10 min) 3. Explain the project that is relevant to their field 4. Say my ideas about the project Would please correct me? I highly appreciate you

Looks great to me. I think the best thing you can do is clearly outline your hypotheses and how your conclusions inform your direction. Those are the ways to best demonstrate your ability to handle the project. 10 minutes is short to run through an entire dissertation so just make sure you give yourself enough time. Best of luck!

Hello! Thank you for all information. I have been invited for a postdoctoral interview, and the PI asked me: “We would ask you to prepare a 10-minute PowerPoint presentation about your work and what you would bring to the project.” I would like to ask you if you can give me some idea about my presentation. I have doubt if I should give an introduction on the topic or not, or go directly to the result of my main research, then at the end two slides about what I will bring to the project. What do you think? Thank you for your videos.

This is tough. I would do intro, results, conclusions. I would keep it really high level. With only a few minutes, you can’t go too granular.
