Postmodern Jukebox is at it again converting stellar rock songs from the 90's into 60's covers in this recreation featuring Haley Reinhart. I was actually familiar with the original song (shocker!) so hearing this just released a few days ago got me extremely excited. There's so much emotion in the original No Doubt released, which started as an upbeat break up song and evolved into a somber tale.
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Postmodern Jukebox for the first time, performing a cover of No Doubt's "Don't Speak” .

Haley is the whole package. She was clearly born with a great set of pipes, but on top of that, it's obvious she has worked very hard to perfect her craft. Her singing techniques, her body language, and her stage presence are all very clearly honed over hours and hours of practice. This is what defines a true performance artist. I can't stop watching and listening to her. It doesn't hurt that she's gorgeous, either.

No one is born with a 'Fantastic Set of Pipes* Haley Reinhart comes from a family 👪 who where her dad is a professional musician. I believe that mom is also. THAT MEANS THAT from day 1 she had access to professional musical training for free. Id be surprised if had a different profession.

Well that's not quite true, is it? If Peter Dinklage had been Shaq's son, no amount of training or coaching is going to let him slam dunk a basketball. The diaphragm and vocal tract are as prone to genetics as a person's height.

Bobby McFerrin is surly one of the most accomplished vocalist. He’s classified as jazz, but his career is hugely varied in how he uses His voice. He usually does improv. In some manner. His father was an opera singer. And one can hear the huge range in his voice. He seldom just sings songs. But after he disappeared from public view after his hit “Don’t worry be happy”, he was directing famous orchestras introducing voice to the orchestral pieces. Currently he is doing Circle Songs (I think)where he directs the audience to make an improv piece. There is a TED talk where he leads the audience in singing a pentatonic scale by jumping across the stage. There are not many interviews, but the one I saw drew me to him as a person. I don’t know how this incredible vocalist could be brought to this channel… but he should be known and sppreciated

Love many music styles, but I have a soft spot for torch singers, and I don't know too many can compete with Haley. The breathiness, perfect pitch, perfectly timed growls, and package that with even the more subtle gestures and acting, sells her delivery. PMJ always well arranged. And she kills it.

Hi Elizabeth, It's Kevin. Hoping all is well? Thank you for sharing this version with us, First time hearing it here with you. A few things come to mind about this cover, Some may not be popular but, It's what I got from Haley's version. Firstly, Haley has a beautiful voice & You were right, The setting, Her lovely gown definitely gave it a more elegant performance overall. Also looked like Hayley was having a blast while singing this, It gave me the memories of a big band performance with an elegant singer from the old day's when we didn't have much variety too choose from on tv. Oh Oh I'm dating myself He! He!. It was fun to watch (Key word Fun) Right after watching/listening to this I listened to the original with Gwen. My thoughts & Maybe only my thoughts are this, Hayley made this her own while making the performance more fun. But for me, The actual emotions & what the song is really about were sort of lost in Hayley's version. Hayley's voice was amazing but to me it looked like she was making this more of a fun song taking away the true meaning of the song. Where as Gwen singing in her softer, lower tones, Made it a deeper sad song giving the true meaning of the break up. But overall, Hayley did an amazing rendition in which I would listen to again, For sure. Hayley sure can sing, Wonderful highs & lows. She definitely has a sweet touch of elegance that not many have.. Thanks again, For sharing this. Throwing this out there again, Recently I've sent some song suggestions from The Canadian Rock Band GODDO Hoping you will take a chance & pick one or more of those songs I sent To react too while hearing for your first time. You Can Never Go Back Anymore, Once Again, There Goes My Baby, Tough Times. Thanks Elizabeth, Take Care & Keep safe!

Having spent my teenage years in the 1960s, I'm aware of how much diversity of musical style blossomed in the decade. I feel sure that the wide variety of styles that Haley displays throughout this cover is intended to encompass that range from the '60s. As an obvious example, the loud, belting part was clearly reminiscent of Janis Joplin. I wonder how many other artists from the '60s can be identified as the prototypes - the acapella part, the swing part, and so on? As an aside, I hope that Elizabeth has listened to Janis. Maybe some comments sometime on what she thinks of her performances?

The next PMJ singer I'd suggest is Allison Young. Perhaps their "Mr. Blue Sky." She does a vintage kind of thing and records a lot of classics on her own YT channel, and you can hardly go wrong just picking one, or one of the duets she has done with Josh Turner on either of their channels ("josh turner guitar" channel).

It would be great to see you explore some performers you have never reacted to. For the following I suggest album versions as I am unaware of any high quality live performances: Gojira - One of the greatest metal bands. I recommend "Flying Whales" since it is one of their best. You need to do "Art of Dying" at some point. I think it is their best song just not a good choice for someone's first time hearing the band. Death - A pioneering force in Death/Progressive/Melodic metal. Their early stuff is more intense and thrash and becomes more melodic as the albums progress. For that reason I recommend songs off the final album "The Sound of Perseverance." My personal favorites on that album are "Story to Tell" and "Spirit Crusher." You should also react to "Voice of the soul" as a sort of double reaction with one of the prior ones. It is a short instrumental song but amazing. Just not long enough to warrant a solo reaction.

Just found you TODAY....Re Puddles and Haley Reinhart - Mad World. Puddles is so undervalued for his abilities -(but not by you). Haley simply rocks it all. SO refreshing to FINALLY have someone with an ear and credibility to properly analyze singers' voices. I have no idea who you are - but appreciate your commentary to pieces!! Just listened to Diva Dance (Feb 05/20). Please re-listen to Laura's version. There is a claim of no digital enhancements what-so-ever. Not so. Please listen for the miro-second delay then over dubbing to give a fuller richer sound. Perhaps one slightly flattened pitch. Particularly in lower and mid ranges it fills out her vocals to be rounder, richer. Very first note onwards you can hear 3 layers (at 14:43); Glissando at 16:24 very evident too. Not the kind of digital enhancements you may have been originally listening for, BUT once you hear it, you can't unhear it.

How could she not be good a capella? Her vibrato isn't fixed to one speed, and she's mastering more techniques on how to choreograph breathing to volume to expression than most any other person her age. Having followed Haley for ten years it's always interesting seeing other singers attempt to mimic her vocals on some songs, like "Creep" for instance. PMJ has implied they'll be performing this song on their upcoming tour. I don't think Haley plans on touring w/ PMJ, I could be wrong but IF Haley sings this on tour w/ PMJ, it will be for special occasions or if they video it, so It'll be interesting to see whomever Scott picks to sing this song on tour if it's not Haley, how they tackle the different textures Haley imbued in this cover
@Smo1k

There's a couple of points in Creep where I think Haley's doing a bit of the same as 80es electric guitar nerds would do: Show you their entire playbook and call it music... But. For a grand total of 3 seconds out of 5 minutes, I can take a bit of TV-shop's "But Wait There's More"ism ;) (Edited: Metaphor McGoo)

@HaleysTusk

@@flavoredwallpaper One thing you should know about Haley, she's extremely loyal, she knows that it was the combination of PMJ, the timing when she joined them that has opened many doors for her, and that Scott has always been generous w/ his support for PMJ's artists. I've seen at least 3 different Haley shows where Scott is the guest and each time, he takes the mic to remind people how special it is to get to hear Haley live, sometimes tells the story of "Creep". I have a feeling this friendship will extend well into each of their careers. All that being said, PMJ is a 'collective' IMO a sort of 'springboard' for up and coming artists. By it's nature, PMJ veterans move on to their careers leaving room for new up and coming talent. If PMJ had stayed w/ a set cast, maybe there might've not been room for Haley in 2015 to show what she could do that convinced Scott to record "Creep" in Switzerland. I told Scott that he's kind of this generation's "Dick Clark" bringing new talent, new musicians on his platform to allow to gain a fan base, get experience touring, then move onto their careers armed w/ what experience they gained from being a part of PMJ. I'm hoping this cover gets traction that gets some TV/airplay so that Haley gets to perform this live w/ PMJ in front of a larger audience, like Creep did

@@matthbva yeah, your best bet at that was in 2015 when Haley toured the US, Europe and Australia with PMJ. I imagine she might perform with them every once in a while, for a special occasion or if she happened to also be in town, but unlikely for the whole tour.

Your enthusiasm and genuine appreciation for her talent and vocal capabilities is exciting to see and hear ! In watching this I am in awe of Haley's tonal pallet. In the Creep video you talked about how she uses lots of different sounds. In listening to this I am struck how unafraid she is to make "Ugly" sounds. She growls, and whines and places sounds high in her nose to great effect. She is fearless in her use of unusual techniques to achieve her unique sound. She uses her voice like a collage artist, tossing in different non traditional sounds, anything to help tell the story. Its a great lesson for all us singers who just stick to the traditional path we have been taught. She is a true artist, her creativity and skill is on full display here. It is inspirational. By the way, when will you collaborate with PMJ? I'm sure they would love it if you approach them with an Operatic take on Bohemian Rhapsody or something. Just putting that out there in the universe. Maybe we can manifest it for you.
