I really loved this reaction video! It was nice to see more than just someone's facial reaction; you had actual things to say haha and I even learned some things. I highly recommend watching her live versions of Creep. The best one in my opinion is her singing Creep at the Amsterdam Bar & Hall. It's...unbelievable....vocally and her stage presence. She's come a long way since this recording.

The first time I heard this I was overwhelmed. I tried, after binge watching it, to understand what was going on. Powerful stuff and so well formed. Drama, art, emotional? Poetry. I still don’t know enough to understand what happens when I watch it again, but it’s still almost too good to be true. Thanks for your reaction.

Haley has been on long tours where she has sung Creep and Seven Nation Army while employing her rasp and her growls night after night with no deterioration of her voice whatsoever. As she is very unique in that regard.

Haley's stage performance should not be overlooked. It adds and elevates her already amazing vocal performance! I've been watching quite a few reaction videos to PMJ's Creep, and the ones I like to rewatch are by singers and vocal coaches who add insight as to why Haley's vocal performance is amazing. Your insights as in instrumentalist adds a new perspective, and I'll be rewatching this reaction video too! P.S. Great technical review of this video. Part of the creep video's success is probably because it was reacted to by....everyone who does reactions. I like it, I watched a ton of them, but I wish more people would also react to the lesser known PMJ covers. Some have 1 or 2 reactions/reviews, a lot of them have none, even though they are quite interesting musically. For example: Criminal (Fiona Apple cover;Singer: Ariana Savalas), MMMbop (Hanson cover), Worth It (Fifth Harmony cover; Singer/Sax player Grace Kelly), etc.

Enjoyed this video, nice dissection of Haley's performance. BTW re: scatting sounding like a trumpet. Here's Haley performing w/ her friend Casey Abrams where she doesn't sing, but uses her 'hand trumpet' on "Steam Roller Blues" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5dK7ikvK0_I.html My two favorite live scat performances are when Haley Did the Traffic Version of the Blind Faith Classic "Can't Find My Way Home", ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rfgTHVGtjjA.html And two years ago, again w/ her friend Casey, this time my favorite all time Haley scat on her original song "Last Kiss Goodbye" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kI1U5aPklY0.html I'm addicted to seeing Haley perform live, and advise anyone who asks to NEVER miss a chance to see Haley perform live. @@DJSwitchPDX Casey was never on the Voice, he competed on Haley's Season of American Idol, Season 10 in 2011. It's been almost ten years, people forget which reality show. Some people think Haley competed on "America's Got Talent", but again, Haley has only competed on Idol. Haley did a PMJ video w/ the seven foot clown, Puddles, a Cover of Gary Jules' Mad World. Puddles competed on AGT, so people confuse it and thinks Haley did too: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aVevvbFNKiY.html Haley and Casey's duet of Moanin' was a break-out highlight of the season, with a TON of scatting, and one of Idol's all time great 'non competition' performances: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UURTLsneDgE.html Since then, they've been dubbed, "Caley" . I've seen them perform together quite a few times. They are great artists on their own, but together, it's insane the talent that comes off the stage. Here's one of my favorite performances from them, the classic "Cry Me a River" but done as a Bosa Nova: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IY5qic_Lbk0.html

@@DJSwitchPDX LOL No worries, I really enjoyed your reaction while dropping knowledge, they were genuine and sincere. One of the fun things I'm really missing out now in the time of CV19 is meeting w/ fans at Haley's shows and talking about Haley. It was quite a thing going to Europe and talking to European fans who never in their wildest dreams thought they'd see Haley live. I've seen her a lot and I still love seeing her live. She is 100% genuine. I know it's shouldn't need to be said, but, NEVER miss a chance to see Haley perform live. It's frigging incredible. Every time. I leave you with one more video. Since I started following Haley in 2011 I promised myself if Haley EVER performed in the UK, I would see it. The UK appreciate these types of female singers, Winehouse, Adlele, Stone, N. Jones, etc. So Months after Haley joined PMJ, she would joine w/ them on her first ever tour after Idol. I found a way to see that show in the UK. This video is of "Creep' live BEFORE PMJ posted their 82 million view video. This video became my first video to hit 100,000 views, it rode the Haley/PMJ wave. Listen to how quite & stunned the audience is. Remember, this was before the video, no one saw it coming ;) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nawPI6MqsT0.html

I haven't heard anyone mention Joss Stone in a long time. That girl is ABSOLUTELY incredible and I have no idea what happened after her big White Stripes cover here in the states (which is still a banger IMO). I know she has a base and she continued to work/tour/etc, but she deserved way more billboard love here than she got. I will absolutely watch this! I really appreciate you stopping by my channel and sharing some Haley love with me! She really is an amazing talent and it's easy to see why her fanbase it's so passionate, so doing more of her stuff in the future certainly makes some sense to me.

For me, my favorite parts were the scat, just before the scat, and the whatever it was at 22:23, that led into the scat is her sexiest moment. Finally, at the denouement of "I don't belong here" at the end, her voice seamlessly melds with the trombone for a nanosecond and you can't tell the difference between the two.

She really has incredible tone control. I played this for a DJ friend shortly after I posted it and his takeaway was that she sounded like a horn player more than a singer sometimes, which I think speaks to her incredible flexibility and range.

I have personal experience with vocal nodules. That supports your thought about singing with a rasp. But I was 19 in a band doing 4-5 gigs per week at the time. Actually had to quit the band for a few months, but eventually got back for a while. But WAY later in life, I sang with a band for about 20 years, sometimes twice a week, usually only a couple of times per month. And I learned that you can do a "growl" without damaging your vocal chords. Hint, it helps if you can hear yourself in the monitor mix. 19-year-old me had to scream to be heard. 50-year-old me had a better solution - I could hear myself singing, and singers will understand that, I hope.

OMG!!! YAYAYAYAY!! Thank you! This made my day! ;) Edited to say that I haven’t even watched your video yet, but I just saw it here. Can’t wait!! Edit 2: I’ve watched this video 1,000+ times and never ever really noticed she led them in from the start. I guess all of the emotions are on high alert so early it’s simple to miss these very important note-worthy pieces of the performance. Edit 3: in terms of her rasp, she reminds me very much of David Draiman of Disturbed. To have the ability to control that growl and protect the vocal chords one has to have ridiculous experience. Edit 4: not only is her note & power range incredible, it her style range is as well. She can go from sounding innocent, to sexy at the drop of a hat. Likewise she can throw in the rasp and skatting at the blink of an eye. Understanding where to toss those stylistic choices, without over- or under-doing requires a ton of balance and control.

You mentioned that you still like the big band type music, if that's the case you should check out this - Jeff Goldblum & The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra feat. Haley Reinhart - My Baby Just Cares For Me. I've lost count of the number of times I've watched it. Blows me away.

Yup, that Jeff Goldblum. Turns out, like Hugh Laurie, that he is multi talented.

What I like about Haley's scatting in "Creep" is it sounds like an instrumental you would hear in a flim or cartoon depicting someone fleeing. The footsteps so to speak ("she runs"). The #1 and #2 PMJ videos were recorded on the same day--during a day off while on their first European tour. Both are remakes of videos they had previously recorded with different artists.

That's really interesting! I didn't know they were remakes! It's cool that a "day off" resulted in their two biggest videos to date ... I've had musician friends talk about pouring hours and hours into a song that means the world to them, and the one they wrote in 10 mins by accident is the one that gets all the plays on Spotify. Weird how that works sometimes! Thank you for watching!

Great job with your analysis. As a fellow musician myself it's so nice to hear technical comments from the POV of a critical listener. As you know, musicians can be the harshest critics of players and performances. That being said.... did you know that Haley was signed with Interscope records I think in 2011? The morons there just dumped her because they had no clue what the hell to do with her! That's the music business for you...The hell with the talent. If we can't market her throw her away along with the baby and the bathwater. I worked for RCA Records in Camden,NJ so why am I not surprised. All they needed to do was find the right producer for her. Well...so it goes. She's a real treasure and I hope the exec's at Interscope are right now kicking themselves in the ass. I like your channel and your take on things so I'll subscribe. Looking forward to more of your insights. Good Job!

You know that I love your reactions, as I learn so much. If you thought this was good (and it is), check out Postmodern Jukebox version of "All About the Bass". The first two singers on that video were on the same season (separately) of American Idol...they didn't win, but both finished high up. Please do that reaction (you will see something fantastic in the middle by the Bass players). I know that you will think it's super great !!!!!

I've had one or two folks mention him and I checked out one of his videos. I dunno how he has that much control in the high register, but he must spend a lot of time working on it.
