#Posture #BodyAnatomy #Comparison
In this video, I am talking about the posture, (the three most common sitting positions for playing flamenco guitar), and I talk and compare the body anatomy (the arms) of 2 guitar legends Paco de Lucía and Vicente Amigo.
Video Contents: 👇
1- Intro Falseta "La Villa Vieja" del Maestro: (00:00 - 2:17)
2- Sitting Position One (Crossing Leg): (2:17 - 4:14)
3- Sitting Position Two (Foot Stool): (4:14 - 5:08)
4- Sitting Position Three (Traditional): (5:08 - 7:15)
5- Common Point (Stability): (7:15 - 8:54)
6- Body Anatomy (Paco's Arms): (8:54 - 12:17)
7- Body Anatomy (Vicente's Arms): (12:17 - 13:34)
8- Body Height/Chair Height: (13:34 - 15:05)
9- Video Outro (With Demonstration of the Three Sitting Positions): (15:05 - 16:06)
When I first started to analyse my hand and try to compare and "match" it with Paco, I noticed that there are just many things that I felt are just impossible to copy, even just simply placing the arm on the guitar, I found so much difficulty to get it like him. Copying Vicente's posture I was totally ok with it, which got so confused and wondered for a very long time, "why is that?".
We, (or most of us I guess), just get so amazed by Paco's hand and fingers and the way they move, it gets all of our attention right? Until I noticed one day, "Oh my god.. Look at his arms!" It changed the way I see Paco's technique, I noticed it's just useless to try to copy, as his body is completely different it will never work for me personally exactly the way it did for him, (because I'm not Paco!).
In this video, I explain and show you with pictures what I'm talking about exactly, (It's nothing special, but it's just something we need to keep in mind!).
I hope this information helps and give you a better understanding on how to approach the technique in guitar, as it greatly did to me.
Thank you for watching and I'll see you next time,
Warmest Regards,
Luciano

For all other tall people here, I'm 1.93m, with long arms and torso. And when I started playing flamenco about 11 years ago, I copied the cross-legged posture of Paco. I had tried the traditional flamenco posture sporadically before but always abandoned, as I thought it makes picados, arpeggios.. etc harder. But about 2 years ago I started seriously practicing playing in it, and I had a break through.... My experience is that it's all an illusion, after sticking with it for a few months, my body adapted to the traditional posture which I now find superior in every possible way. I can now play things like Guajiras de Lucia and Plaza Alta no problem... And of course, you don't get lower back pain and your legs don't fall asleep, you can hear your instrument better and get better feed back and also the back of the guitar vibrates better, switching right hand positions between thumb techniques and finger style techniques becomes more intuitive, your left hand moves easier along the neck when the neck is that higher, and overall I find that one becomes more emotionally connected to the guitar in the traditional posture. I think Juan Martin was spot on when he said in his book, and I'm paraphrasing, that (even if you don't end up playing in it all the time), mastering the traditional posture is a must for any flamenco player.

It's unbelievable how you cover all the topics that are so important and with such an understanding and ability to explain and teach them with such a clarity! Thank you! I was just these days struggling with posture as I understood that I'm not having good one and this cleared alot now! My arm has big distance from shoulder to elbow and from elbow to wrist, but you made it so clear and now I understand my own anatomy better! Thank you brother, perfect lessons!

That has always been my main problem with guitar, the posture. As a tall guy, 1,93 m, i have to take off my arm even for some arpegios and rasgeado. So now i m playing crossing the other leg , and i m more balanced , less twisted... Paco revolutionazed the guitare crossing his right leg, now it s my turn !! Ah ah 👹👹👹 Good lesson Maestro, thanks.

Thank you so much for all this effort maestro! You are amazing as always and tremendously helpful to many people. I always use crossed leg and I got many times numb leg during performances.. I would say in all performances I was not playing classical with the classical position. This video was a joy to watch! Jeronimo Maya who is also VERY tall uses a crossed leg but not so much close to the ankle but closer to the knee to manage less leg tension, numbness and optimum height of the guitar. It has helped me a lot with shorter chairs. Anyway.. Muchas Gracias por todo maestro! Salud y un abrazo fuerte!
@LucianoGhosn
@LucianoGhosn 3 года назад
Thank you for watching as always Andreas! I didn't know Jeronimo Maya is tall! I also do that by the way, I keep the knee closer, it feels more comfortable for me, Paco used to put the ankle closer, it's another thing which I didn't mention in this video about Paco's body, but he had also pretty short legs, he can control way easier don't you agree? His anatomy was just perfect for guitar really from head to toe.. Un abrazo!

Another great informative video Luciano keep em coming. I found the the arm comparison very interesting my arms are the same as Pacos but I have a wide palm but short fingers so picado for me doesn’t work like pacos keeping the thumb in facing down and the palm flat I have to have a slight arch and thumb out and that feels comfortable to me I’ve also found having short fingers when carrying out abanico I cannot get the power as much as someone with long fingers Final word I’m loving these videos and again the intro piece amazing loving the use of those chords

Hello! depends on your back, how you are built, you can develop big problems on a long way to play legs crossed. Make sure to strech often and feel if your back is doing ok. So i bought a pad to put on my leg (any leg) and play without problem. The pad also prevents to use a footstand which can unbalanced your back and shoulders on a long period of time. I guess i was'nt naturally built to play guitar and i play all day long. This way i dont feel any pressure anywhere. I also use it (pad) for practicing electric guitar without a strap cause i started to have neck problems years ago. When i started to use the pad, all problems went away. I thought of saying cause i had a few little problems that prevent me to play like the flamenco positions. Even as a kid i had problem to have a good position at classical.

Very nice video and important topics that are rarely discussed especially the part about the chair since it makes all the difference when playing cross legged. I hope that you make a separate video on what to look for when choosing flamenco chair and how to determine the chair height based on ones anatomy. BTW, I never thought of Paco having huge hands and they're definitely smaller than Vincent's Amigo's, Grisha Goryachev's and yours I think:)

Having the guitar at an angle is difficult for picado unless you have very short arms. Your elbow is closer to the body meaning you can hold it without effort easier. Classical guitarists use this position so they have an optimal paralel shape of the left hand and the neck. Thats why they always have such beautiful finger placement on the neck, and their fingers get less bunched up, making it easier to play notes more clearly.

So right! We never talk about the anatomy of players. If you are super tall or have long arms you are at such a disadvantage. I have long arms and Big hands. If you are tall with long arms you need almost perfect upright posture to do picados... or hike your elbow up to like 90° So good for analyzing this. Tall people with long arms are at such a disadvantage. You really need to be short person with a small length of arms and Huge hands I think. But if you have a long spine you are at a disadvantage I’ve been thinking about this a lot. I think Paco had great anatomy. Not too tall, short arms and big hands

To my knowledge this is the first video talking not only about posture but also about anatomy in flamenco. Speaking of anatomy, Vicente's fingers have an unusual quality in that the top joint can kind of bend backwards. I find it really odd to look at how he does picados, for instance. I am not sure if such a large degree of backward joint mobility is helpful, but he sure plays like the great master that he is.

Glad you enjoyed this video too Hierro! Yes his fingers are indeed special, and this bending in his finger (bending the first joint when playing), will result in sweeter sound. He is indeed a great Master. Cheers!

I can tell you.. day in day out I have trouble figuring out what's the perfect position... :) Thumbs up, If you feel like the guitar could be constructed in another way to fit better to the players need. (Not talking about traditional positions with little stools).

I understand yes, it's feels very unnatural. Then we would need each guitar to be customisable to each player!

Maestro, in the second position you have to hold the guitar when doing picado anyway right? Because it sounds as if you solve the picado problem of the classical position of having to hold when doing picado but in my case it keeps falling... Hope I explained myself and congrats for the videos!

@LucianoGhosn
@LucianoGhosn 3 года назад
Yes I understand what you meant, in the traditional way of playing, when you're doing Picado it's very difficult to hold the guitar.. That's why I almost never use this position. I have to hold the guitar from the left hand when I do Picado and it becomes very inconvenient. Thank you for watching the videos, glad you're enjoying them! Cheers!

Maybe the size of the guitar Paco uses {bigger and deeper body} contributed to his arm and wrist looking straighter .

Thanks for the remarks on moving the guitar around too much. I find it to look very forced, pretentious even, at times. Even with some maestros... I'm not into the "show" aspect of music a lot, as I think it can distract from the essence of what is being played. Minimal is key, in my opinion.
