I’m sure you’ve seen pictures of the Potato Chip Rock hike even if you’re not familiar with it. Potato Chip Rock is the iconic rock formation in San Diego County where everyone grabs a photo of themselves perched out on the rock, over the oblivion. The hike to the rock and summit of Mt Woodson is a fun one, with a few options to get to the top. It’s a hard hike because of the uphill, but otherwise well-marked and easy to do.

To each their own. I love to hike and specifically look for challenging hikes with a lot of climbing. But I won't do this hike because of the crowds. My motivation for hiking is to get away from everyone for a few hours--that's just me. Looks like a nice hike.

That's why you get to the chip by 7am.

He’s not joking about the people on this one. The crowds are honestly a huge deterrent if you actually want to enjoy nature.
@Hikingguy

Yea, when there's crowds, you mind as well just walk through downtown San Diego. But when it's 6am and you have it to yourself, it's great.

@Mark Sturdivant oh yea, weekends are bad... I've done it on a Sunday later afternoon and it's much better though, but it's prob a bit of a crap shoot
@Hikingguy
@Hikingguy 4 года назад
@Mark Sturdivant thank you thank you! They're both tough but on Whitney it's the altitude that gets you. C2C is tougher but you start really low and at the high end it's not so bad. For me C2C has been a little tougher I think.

I've hiked the trail many times. Spot on advise about getting up early and getting there just before dawn. I hate the crowds so leave early and pass them on the way down. Btw its pronounced Pow Way. John from Poway. Thank you for your video.

Thanks for the note and pronunciation guidance! I'm originally from the East Coast so I'm pretty good at mispronouncing things!

I like how the trail changes every now and then, from a wide path to a rugged hike and so on. Great video and great sights to see :)

At 22, I tried this hike for the first time in 1988, and got too tired to reach the summit. I've hiked it dozens of times since and, at 54, did it easily yesterday in 3 hours of brisk hiking. The ladies in flip flops probably hiked up from the Ramona side which is largely paved and not challenging.
@Hikingguy
@Hikingguy 3 года назад
yea lots of folks come up on the paved path but the Poway route def has plenty of people in flip flops, jeans, etc. too

@@Hikingguy I've never seen that, but I believe you. In any case, I try not to judge other hikers, since everyone is different and a better judge of their needs than I am. As an example, I've been up and down Iron Mountain over a thousand times. Unless the temperature is over 95F, I don't carry water. I've been stopped on the trail by other hikers and treated like an idiot because I'm not carrying water, but the truth is that the hike is not a challenge for me, I can't possible get lost, and I pre-hydrate with a liter and a half of water and have water waiting for me at the staging area. I've never even come close to needing water on the trail, sub 95F. I also usually hike in socks and Ecco-style sandals (not flipflops) which some people find incredible both as a fashion choice and as safe hiking gear, but the sandals work really well for me unless I'm having to climb or hike in snow.

Hi. I just watched your Garmin InReach versus ACR Beacon RU-vid which I found very helpful. I was wondering if when my ACR beacon’s battery dies, you mentioned to buy an upgrade for about $150 more. Do I just trade in the old one and pay the difference? At the moment I don’t have the one with the view window. In addition, I was wondering, instead of spending a subscription on an InReach would I be able to get use of my Midland walkie-talkies in the same way? I just bought a pair and I believe they have weather and GPS also. I would think that would save money although the InReach looks very compact.
@Hikingguy
@Hikingguy 2 года назад
1 - For the battery, just go to an ACR service center or send it in (locations on their website) and they'll swap the battery and reseal it. You get the same unit back but with new battery good for another 5 years. 2 - Walkies will only work if someone at rescue is on the other end. The walkie talkie channels are not monitored for emergencies. Some people do bring portable amateur radios with them though, you may want to look into that. But if you have an ACR and get in trouble, I think you're okay with just that.

Ii think the parking officially opens at 6am but not sure if the gate is closed. I'd call the park link in the guide and ask.

BTW how stable is that rock to stand on?
@Hikingguy
@Hikingguy 6 лет назад
Well, it'll probably break one day. It shakes a little when someone jumps on it. If it does break when you're on it, you'll probably fall 30-40 feet, maybe break your legs. I'm sure people fall off of it (who are drunk, etc.).

Thanks for doing this video. In the past I think I mention I am in a wheelchair and would love to do this. After seeing this it helps to know what is expected or I can call the city if they let me drive up on the fire roads? Lol ... let me know if you know who has information ok driving up for wheelchair users
@Hikingguy
@Hikingguy 3 года назад
Good question, I think you'd probably want to go up the shorter route (see the article in the description) which I believe is paved all the way (go over the route on Google Maps satellite view). That might be your best best. To call for more info, try Poway City Hall..
