Meat Pies are an Aussie favourite and they don't have too much in way of vegetables in them generally. Our Recipe for Potato Meat pies have a couple of veggies smuggled into them to keep the kids healthy and happy as well. A great weekend project that's quick, easy, budget friendly, filling and most importantly Tasty, we do hope you give it a try.
INGREDIENTS:
2 medium poatoes
100g minced/ground meat . We used beef but you could use lamb, chicken, turkey or pork for this recipe.
1 carrot
1/2 onion
1 clove garlic
50g grated cheese
1t vegetable salt
1 sheet of puff pastry
1T cornflour mixed with 30g water
125g stock, chicken, beef or vegetable works well here.
We used the sunbeam Pie Magic 4 but any pie maker could be used for this recipe.

Glad you enjoyed it, nothing beats a good home made pie and these little pie makers are a godsend. We never have any waste in the kitchen, always making a little extra to fill Pies for the following days lunch or the freezer for an impromptu meal at some later stage. Thank you for the lovely feedback and for watching.;-))

Thanks Cheeky. Real practical stuff. You are the first cook I've seen that partly cooks the pastry bases before adding the filling. I'll try that. 👍

Thank you Lucy, most people associate Australia with Meat Pies but our pie shops and bakeries here, sell so many different varieties nowadays. This has to be one of my favourites, along with a chunky pepper steak pie, which reminds me I really must make a video of that. Hope you are keeping safe and well and keeping away from crowds and places of potential exposure to this nasty virus. Take care and thank you for watching.;-))

Early life on a farm has taught me to respect food, try to never waste it. Stock up on home preserves and take advantage of groceries I normally use when it’s on special. I can’t believe where people are actually stockpiling this stuff especially perishables. You can always put a few extra cans or jars in the cupboard but even the shops freezers and fridges are empty. I can’t believe that many people normally eat out and now they are having to cook at home, which is adding to the shortages. I’ve never seen anything like it.😳

We alway make her Birthday Party cake together. Her mummy is quite an accomplished photographer and has captured some lovely photos of her cooking with me. The very thought of her warms my heart, she just turned 7 so she is quite the little chef now.thank you for watching and your great feedback.;-))

@@CheekysKitchen I love sweet potatoes 🍠 always in my cupboard & I grow them wish I could grow pumpkin 🎃 like Richo me so jelly lol….my grandson turns 11 next Saturday one week after his nanny, we used to cook 🧑🏼‍🍳 👩‍🍳 together all the time, I just adore him, miss him by the loads now always at school & school events 🥺🥺 but I guess school must come first lol. They are coming over tonight they live in Brisbane 2 hrs away 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢 their lives are very full on so I cherish very moment I get with them. Does your daughter do photography or just personally for herself? My daughter & I love taking photos, when hubby (Pete) & I travel & we stop at places & go on our adventure he just rolls his eyes at me because I’m forever taking photos lol. Oh also in my half & half potatoes I sometimes also add caramelised or just fried onions or fried onions & red capsicum & mushrooms. Also have you seen Coles brand “Caramelised Onion & Balsamic Chutney” sooooo tasty & great value…I’m addicted love it on home made pizza….need to give it a go 🥰 anyway time to🤐up….enjoy your day 🥰😘

Havent seen the coles chutney yet because I have rushing in snd rushing out . I really miss my leisurely stroll around the supermarket taking in all the new products and international ingredients. I always collect the free recipes and books on offer and have found them to be really good to use seasonal produce. Have a wonderful night with your visitors. We are still being super careful because my Mum can’t get vaccinated and is very immunosuppressed at present. Look out when I can get into my Asian supermarkets snd fruit shops. Wish your Grandson the Happiest Birthday from us for next Saturday….. is it your Birthday Tomorrow Lorraine? I’m glad you grandson has shared some wonderful cooking memories with you. Make the most of it before it’s no longer cool to hang out with Nanny. It won’t be long, they grow up so fast. My daughter does photography professionally, weddings, families, birth photos and pets. She had her photo published on the front cover of a prominent Bridal magazine. I am very proud of her, she also has a full time job and is a wonderful mother to my gorgeous grand daughter. Hope you have a Fabulicious weekend, I’m guessing your grandson will be a big fan of any Macca meal you make. The pie maker makes the cutest little double cheeseburgers too. Keep safe.;-))

Thank you Michelle. We live in a little place, only 500 residents so I have to travel to town to shop. I’m actually quite used to self isolating and stocking up on staples. As a result of this channel I also have a huge array of spices, condiments and canned foods on hand as well as lots of home preserved jams, pickles, sauces, stocks and plenty of dehydrated fruits and vegetables too. I have always bought toilet paper in bulk, when on special, in fact a friend shopping with me once asked if I was expecting a Cholera plague. I can’t just pop down to the corner store for a bottle of milk in fact all of my neighbours at one time or another has borrowed sugar eggs, flour etc even a frozen chicken once lol. Our workshop is extremely well stocked as well for the same reason. My late neighbour called me Bunnings and wanted to know if I did rain checks haha. I’m also pretty used to swapping out ingredients as well which sometimes leads me to invent new recipes. My grand daughter doesn’t like vegetables but happily munched into this pie and has changed her mind about carrots now that she has tried my Honey carrots and carrot cakes. I also like that I can get 4 pies out of one sheet of pastry and they are a good size to manage. I hope you are staying safe and well and if we all pull together this terrible virus will hopefully leave us all alone soon. Thanks for watching and you kind well wishes.;-))

Oh Paddy Joe, sorry to hear you are having trouble get groceries too. I hadn’t been to the shops for a while and this week, I called in to get some ingredients for a recipe request from one of my viewers and honestly got a shock. The car park was empty the shop was devoid of most things, even the freezers were completely bare. Where are people storing all this stuff? People are selling freezers on gumtree that look like they should be thrown out for nearly new prices. It’s just crazy. Lucky I have RU-vid cooking and my editing to keep me busy otherwise I’d be really worried. Hope you get some nice fresh food soon, we aren’t used to food shortages in this country. It might make people be a bit less wasteful, with a bit of luck.;-))

Whats the name of that portable stovetop your using?
@CheekysKitchen
@CheekysKitchen 4 года назад
Gee bunnylove2780, I didn’t know it would be so interesting. It’s an induction cooker, the brand is Highlander. It’s an 1800watt portable bench top appliance that can be dyed on its end in a cupboard. It’s perfect for my RU-vid cooking because I can bring it to the camera and light set up and be simply wiped down and put away after use. I carry one in our camper too , when we have power it’s much cleaner and easier to use than gas. Glad you enjoyed our recipe and thank you very much for watching.;-))

Hi Cheeky great job.what is the cooktop you are cooking the meat mixture in? Thankyou.
@CheekysKitchen
@CheekysKitchen 2 года назад
Hey Stephen, thanks for the great feedback. That is a little single plate portable induction cooktop. We did an unboxing of it quite a while ago. Bought it off eBay and it’s so light, stores on its end so take little cupboard space, wipes clean easily and I find the heat control so much more accurate and easier than gas. I carry one in my Motorhome so I can cook away from the camper or on the outdoor picnic table. You do need power but they are more energy efficient that the original glass top hot plates. You can’t cook with regular or ceramic or glass pots or pans but most cookware is now suitable for induction. I liked it so much I replaced my regular glass top range with an induction range with a built in wok burner. I use it for everything and would never have gas if I had a choice. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.;-))
@stephenmcfarlane7961

Thanks for your detailed reply Cheeky.i love inductio. Have a nuwave model that goes up in increments on 5 degrees.so much easier to control heat than normal electric hot plates . Interested because yours seemed to have a dial on it and I wondered how that controlled temperature. Thanks for your videos and your response.
@CheekysKitchen
@CheekysKitchen 2 года назад
Yes Stephen, you are quite right, it is quite an early portable model. I actually sold it with a camper a few years back. I didn’t have gas connected and was showing the prospective buyer why I couldn’t justify an annual gas inspection for the vehicle, a dedicated area for a vented gas bottle and the ease and safer usability of the induction hot plate. I didn’t intend to sell the hot plate with the van as I use it on the patio to keep nibbles warm or when filming as it can be moved to the lights and camera area but once the new owner saw it, they insisted on having it included. I now have an eco heat one that has a variable Power so is even more convenient for my latest Motorhome. You can buy a plate to sit between the cooktop and cookware not suitable for induction but that defeats the purpose and convenience of induction in my humble opinion. I just bought a microwave toaster, that makes perfect grilled cheese toasties. Works exceptionally well. I will be doing a video soon showing just how clever it is. Thanks for the feedback and your kind support.;-))

@CheekysKitchen
@CheekysKitchen 4 года назад
Thank you very much Philip. The stove is called a Highlander. It is a portable induction cooktop. Very light, pretty precise temperature control and wipes clean easily. I bought it off eBay for under $50 a few years ago. I did an unboxing video of one similar to This but ended up selling it with a camper an we made. I like that it is portable so I can use it in my cooking tutorials, without having to shift my camera tripod and lights set up to the stove top which actually encroaches on a doorway so inevitably gets bumped. Thank you for your enquiry, you nice comment and for watching.;-))

Hi again. You have helped me before. I'm having trouble getting my pastry nice in my pie maker, like in a real pie. Is there a secret? Do you use all puffy pastry?
@CheekysKitchen
@CheekysKitchen 3 месяца назад
Thank you for your question. I think you will find bakeries use short crust pastry for the base and puff pastry for the top. I have used both methods and have been pleased with the results. The pie maker immediately starts cooking the base because it applies direct heat to both the top and the bottom at the same time whereas commercial bakers use convection heat, like a souped up version of your household fan forced oven. I personally don’t like thick stodgy pastry like that found in cake shop pies. The main reason I love the pie makers and sausage roll makers is the ability to choose ingredients and cook them to my families personal taste. I have also found a big difference between pastry brands, some are much nicer than others. We don’t like the taste and texture of Aldi brand pastry and during COVID, when it was difficult to source baking ingredients we found pampas and borgs pastry to be very well suited to the pie maker but sometimes you just had to take what you could get. It’s personal taste, availability and trial and error. There is also different results between different pie maker models and different sized pie makers too. If you are after a crisper more cooked finish…. Try cooking your pies a little longer and experiment with different pastry brands. I do hope that helps and thanks for the great feedback, your valuable question and for watching.;-))
