Today I'm harvesting our maincrop potatoes which have been grown in containers on the shadier side of my allotment, with minimal water due to a very dry spring.
How did they do? Good or bad? Watch as I reveal the results!
I also explain how I grew these potatoes, and go over some useful information about growing potatoes in containers to help you achieve the best harvests possible!

Your video is a great reminder of the value of patience and perseverance. It takes a lot of time and effort to grow and harvest melons and oranges, but the end result is so worth it. And the fact that you're able to make a living by selling them at the market is even more impressive. Keep up the great work! And it's an honor to have you visit our channel, we can discuss more about our experiences in harvesting and building farms.

Thanks Tracey! Mine are just curing in the shed for a few days before I pop them in my hessian sacks for storage. I had to block out the windows in my shed! 🤦‍♂️ Good luck I hope it all goes well!

Some really nice size potatoes and a great harvest! I didn't know about the trick on removing the flowers!! I was going to say it must have been quite a workout flipping out all those containers 💪I put manure in my second batch of spuds I didnt realise it could cause scab 😲🤦‍♀️ Great video Jim 👍
@downtoearthwithjim
@downtoearthwithjim 11 месяцев назад
Yes! To be honest mine fall off on their own and don't set seed pods. But otherwise you should pick them off by hand. It was backbreaking work for sure 😂 who needs the gym when you're a gardener?! Honestly scab isn't a big issue.. so long as you dry them properly before storage. And it peels off when you peel the skin off anyway, they're just a bit unsightly and not as Instagram worthy 😂 I'm not 100% sure if it's the manure but the ones which were touching it had scab and other gardeners have had similar happen to them. Thanks for watching!

@downtoearthwithjim good to know I have a few flowers forming at the minute so I might just pick them off!! Honestly Jim, when you said you were flipping out all those buckets I really felt for you, and you made it look like a peice of cake! They would have been so heavy with the water as well 🙈 really enjoying your channel 👍🌱

Hi Jim Not a bad harvest of spuds you got there. I grew king Edwards once and what a waste of time, like yours lots of small ones. The best main crop I have ever grown is sarpo Mira, I got 11lb of two seed potatoes one year, think it was luck more than skill. Another good main crop that I grow is Cara, they normally perform well, not ready to lift my main crop yet still harvesting the first early ones. Take care 👍👍👍👍👍🥔🥔🥔🥔🥔

@downtoearthwithjim 11 месяцев назад
Thanks Rob! They've not done too bad this year. Wow that's very impressive! I have to say I'm really impressed with the Sarpo Miras, last year they performed really well too. So I think they're going to be my choice each year to be honest! The blight resistance is the best thing as we have a lot of blight problems. Take care, Jim 🧑‍🌾

Thanks! It's probably my best year yet for spuds. They are a good all rounder in my opinion although I've found them to be better for roasting than for mash

Why do you plant mostly red potatoes and few white potatoes?
@downtoearthwithjim
@downtoearthwithjim 4 месяца назад
Couple of reasons. I have an issue with blight on my plot and many of the blight resistant varieties such as Sarpo Mira and Setanta are red types. The other reason, I just like them? I've not noticed any flavour difference though to be honest. I'm growing a few white skinned potatoes this year

Where do you store your pptatos after harvest?
@downtoearthwithjim
@downtoearthwithjim 2 месяца назад
I'll usually let them sit in the sun for a couple of hours to dry off. Then I'll let them cure (dry out and let skins harden for storage) in the shed for at least 2 weeks laid out in trays, in my case mushroom crates usually. Then I'll bag them up in Hessian sacks and store them in our pantry at home which is cool and dark. Keep them away from onions and in a dark cool and dry place

You seem to plant your seed potatoes very shallow. Can go much further down.
