Finally my camera has been returned. I have a wonderfully sunny day which proved to be an island in the storm. Waste comes over from the house (Nothing cooked just raw veg waste) A couple of pumpkins gave in to the frost so they go in to. I start making plans for the cold frame lid to be revealed later. The wind has taken its toll in various places, Broccoli are on the lean again and the old broccoli is ready to come out. I go over my thoughts for the carrot bed in the poly tunnel. I settle for working outside due to the sunny weather, time to work on the shed base area I think. Levelling goes well and then I leave it to settle. Ive decided to use my own compost for potatoes this year and the compost is now running low for my needs , who would have thought.A little more moving out of my old space and I'm done for the day.
UK Allotments are the ideal place to learn how to grow fruit and vegetables. My allotment is a no dig allotment and I share how to grow vegetables and how to prepare a no dig garden. If you are growing in a backyard garden or homestead and you want some tips on how to grow vegetables I hope my channel has something to offer. Allotment ideas are always worth sharing and I am happy to share my gardening ideas and failures so that we can all learn to grow vegetables together. I also learn on the allotment nearly every time I am there and learning how to grow in a Polytunnel or greenhouse can be a fun an exciting experience too. If you are one of the many allotment beginners or thousands of people growing in your garden for the first time then join me growing on Allotments For Fun and food and get some allotment ideas

Morning Malcolm. What a beautiful blue sky! Definitely made the right choice to work outside. I was out all day yesterday after days of rain, pulled the rest of my leeks as they were a bit pathetic and haven't fully recovered after the frosty December. Still delicious though but no point leaving them in any longer. Like you now now planning what to do with this space for this coming growing season. I did a lot of flower clearing and planted the rest of my spring bulbs finally - I am so late with that. Definitely felt the muscles aching last night, which is good. Have a good week. 😊👍

Just be careful you don't want to injure your neck again. - re the shed might it be an idea to buy/get hold of some breeze blocks to raise the floor of the soil surface and therefore help to keep the shed floor from rotting if that area has a tendancy to be wet - would it be possible to get hold of some more of those plastic pallets which again could be a support for the shed floor - the carrot bed why not just fill from the poly tunnel bed's poor soil and then enrich that bed with your compost Great video as always 👍
@MalcolmKingswell
@MalcolmKingswell Год назад
I will Stephen, it will definitely need to be raised and not sink over time so I have some thinking to do. I will fill the carrot bed from the tunnel as long as I have enough to replace it with. So much to do lol, take care Malc

Just had a thought ..... What about using all that clay you dig out of the raspberry bed as a base. Dig out some of that good soil put the clay layer down, tamp it then lay your eg. breeze block sub floor. A lot of work I know 😊

Sunny here in Lincs. as well Like you, took the opportunity to move some compost onto the veg beds - having it well covered makes it so much more pleasurable to deal with. Good and friable instead of a sloppy mess. Local robin has gone to bed this evening with a full tummy, having gorged itself on the woodlice inhabiting the most recent pile of material. I'm sure I heard it saying "Good times!".

Good idea to work outside in the sun when not too hot & not in the poly tunnel look how much you achieved. I can see you having a decent sized shed there Malcolm Do you not have to put it on concrete base? I’ll have to keep a watch for when you get it to see how it’s installed. Hope the Mrs Had a cuppa ready when you got home. Cheers for now.

I had an area like your terraced area where I needed to construct my greenhouse. I did a retaining wall-and then filled in the gap with weed-barrier i\on bottom, then old pavers, gravel, sand and soil, and topped the entire area with pavers. It works well. Not bad for me, 69 yrs old. What you did is good but I am worried you may have pooling water In or under your shed, like you said. You have that big slope in front. Your area is almost like a watershed area.

To stop your buckets sticking together, put a plastic milk bottle top at the bottom of each bucket when storing them, should stop that problem.

Hello, could you not do a 50-50 mix of your spent compost that's in the bin and the potato buckets, then you'd have 5 buckets worth of horse poo for one of the beds thats a bit short?

It's all looking great there. Quick question... how damp do you normally keep your manure pile? I managed to find a place about 20minutes drive from me that has a constant supply... but I noticed my pile had become quite dry (it got up to around 70c when I first got it... but it was likely a bit damp then). I've had a sheet of cardboard over it to stop it getting too wet... but we've finally had some quite hot days this summer (in Australia)... so I'm thinking it might be better to leave the cardboard off and maybe give it a water when I water the garden?.
@MalcolmKingswell
@MalcolmKingswell Год назад
Hi Chris, I guess your temps are much higher than mine , I think keeping the covers on helps keep the moisture in but I would water it once a week in hot weather with just a watering can of water.....hope that helps Malc
