POTENCY VS TENACITY Explained star wars galaxy of heroes swgoh

all abilities start at 100% potency
so equation is 100+potency-tenacity=chance (Door 2)
This is why characters like CLS or GAT are better as their equation
is 100+potency-100-tenacity= real chance
(15% hardwired failure not included above )

lol all you guys that still don't comprehend: three seperate doors to represent three different checks. There is no addition or subtraction of probabilities between doors.

Yes I get it now, but I've been going through videos, forum, reddit posts, as far back as I can find, and no one really gave me an explanation as to why, just one sentence lines about tenacity being crap, useless, not worth farming etc...

OK, Ten mods where also the second 5 star mods I was able to get while chasing Palpatine, and it was either those or health, with the latter of course being better, but crouchingrancor's page on mods per character, he actually recommends them for beasts like Thrawn, Gen Kenobi, 3 sets on Rex, Yoda, Hera and more, and this guy claims to be an authority on everything SWGOH related...

Watch at 1.5x speed. 16m spent on something a picture could have illustrated. Edit - tl;dw: There are three requirements for a debuff to be successful. All three have to be fulfilled in this sequence: 1. The toon has some chance of applying the debuff (see ability description). If this chance is not 100% then there is some RNG at play. 2. The next chance is 100% + toon potency% - enemy tenacity%. This is usually a gimme in PVP except for CLS, GAT, and Wampa. Some enemy bosses have really high tenacity. 3. There is a 15% chance of failure. RNG determines this and some debuff abilities circumvent it. From the video, 15% seems to be hardcoded. It was unclear to me from the video how this interacts with a toon's resistance or evasion chance.

Nice vid man, i would like to see an explanation about defense vs offense and how that translate into damage. For example, is it better to mod a tank with a defense set, so he receives less damage, or health set, so he can survive more damage? What's the formula?
@WarriorPresents

My misconception was that if an ability had a 70% chance, potency mods improved those odds. I had thought that the formula was Ability's Chance % + Character's Potency (including mods) - Opponent's Tenacity. So if the ability was 70% and the character had 100% potency add (natural plus mods), I would have thought the ability was now at 140% (not 170% as 100% of 70% is still 70%, so it would be 70%*2), then it would subtract the opponents tenacity, which if that was at 50%, would put my overall potency rat back to 70% (knocking 50% off of 140% means 70% chance to hit). Hearing that there are three doors and the ability's 70% chance is not to actually land, but merely to get past the first check, and that percentage never changes is depressing. They way they advertise it is misleading IMO. It reminds me of how "rate up" in the Fate/Grand Order game is done. FGO will advertise that the rate is up to get a certain 5* Servant when you use crystals to summon. In reality, the 5* summon percentage stays at 1%, but if you get that 1%, then a second check is done on which Servant you'll get, where the "rate up" Servants have a high percent chance of showing up. Thanks for clearing everything up.

Thanks for the video, Warrior! I appreciate when you do in-depth guides like this. Also, I found something pretty interesting I want to show you on the SWGOH Reddit. A topic by the name of All Characters (Including Unreleased) started by the user FamousVQ. It shows you all the characters currently in the game and those that have been datamined in an Excel document. Something else to note is that this list includes PVE characters who according to a response by DEV Event Designer Capgasp "are rather unlikely to ever be released as player obtainable units" like the Cartel units. Just something that I thought you would like to see.

Thank you, that was a great explaination. There was only one thing I was left confused on, which was a door 2 mechanic. I felt like you were saying you needed 140% tenacity to stop 140% potency. While technically true that it requires at least that much to guarantee a stop, any tenacity from 41-139% tenacity is still useful as it offers a chance to resist. The only reason I pointed out my confusion was so anyone else in the same boat could get clarification by reading this. Again, great video and thank you.

Warrior, I've been thinking, and it would seem that if Potency was not a base 100%, it would mostly never apply. So, that might have been the idea behind the mechanics implemented. I do think that you could still clarify a couple of concepts, specially by putting names under the three doors, like: Chance, Resist and Evade. This is specially important, because, and please correct me if I'm wrong, Evasion is a thing with some leaders, like zMaul and Old Ben. And then you have the infamous Accuracy arrow, which would apply to that third door, right? Because you put that 15%-RNG, but you didn't explained that component very much. Another point that I think would be important to make, is that the Resist door takes into consideration the attacker and defender "level difference". If you have a lvl 75 against a lvl 85, you are not going to pass that door much. As you get to lvl 85, everything is as you said. But it is important to understand this for people leveling up toons.
@WarriorPresents
@WarriorPresents 6 лет назад
+baldusi for the tenacity side it's a case-by-case basis as their leveling up their characters but for PVP bottom line is tenacity really doesn't work
@baldusi
@baldusi 6 лет назад
I was more thinking of expalining to new players why their lvl 75 Resistance is failing miserably to Expose in a Raid (the level difference issue). Same issue with Evasion Up. Those are the parts of the equation that new players might not understand, even after watching your awesome video. I mean this because your mods video was such an eye opener, that i went from having the worst mods to being one of the gurus. But, even in that video, a clarification that mods only apply their effect to the base gear of the toon, would have completed the lesson. I deeply enjoy, admire and thank your videos, and I was only trying to add a constructive crisicism. Hope you don't mind.
@WarriorPresents
@WarriorPresents 6 лет назад
+baldusi absolutely and I like your input. Just know that when people are growing a character such as those you're talking about their characters gear level is suffering and that's where most of the natural potency will come from just like speed Health protection and everything else. That's where mods come into play to shore up those deficiencies

Nicely stated. Basically, we can use tenacity on certain toons effectively in Raids and light side/dark side battles but tenacity mods are mostly a waste in arena. I guess one could load Thrawn up with tenacity mods, but when you look at other factors like speed, potency, crit chance/damage, you have to contemplate what you lose just to gain that amount of tenacity.

Hi, Warrior! Next time you speak with the devs ask them about that tenacity up buff. When chars have 20% tenacity and Rex or Chirrut puts the tenacity up buff on them so how much tenacity will they have? I never get through this buff. I mean no one of my characters could apply any debuffs to the character with tenacity up buff from Rex or Chirrut. I tried to make as much potency as possible and sometimes it was was more then 100% (200% totally if those 100% basic which you are speaking in you video are thrue) and could not apply any debuffs or turn meter reducing to those with tenacity up buff. Looks like a bug.

Thanks for the video - great explanation. Going to rip out Rex's tenacity mods now. When you talk about Thrawn, I think it should be mentioned that the +100% tenacity from Ebb and Flow only applies while an enemy is fractured. So a lot of the time tenacity mods on him will be useless, right?
@WarriorPresents
@WarriorPresents 6 лет назад
+Eric E no you still have to remember that tenacity mods will still reduce a percentage of the potency. For example if they had 60% potency and you had 70% tenacity then you would reduce the chance of that ability down to 90%. While it's not a huge reduction it's still reducing the chance at door two

Good video but I am 99% sure you have the 15% base resist wrong. Devs have said this is the minimum resist chance, your video implies it is added after the tenacity check. Also tenacity-potency is the same as 100+potency-tenacity with fewer elements :)

I wish you would go over examples a little more. Like the 80% you spoke of, which is the first door, then what percentage would it be affective (doesn't have to be precise) if someone had 50% potency from mods, excluding door #3? Or Idk, a similar example. Thank you though for the explanation!
@WarriorPresents
@WarriorPresents 6 лет назад
+oscar mend yeah I just didn't want to make the video any longer. Long story short you basically need to have enough potency to overcome your opponents tenacity. And the only time you want to use tenacity as if your able to significantly overcome your opponent's potency and even then they will only reduce a percentage chance of the ability
@pduncan88
@pduncan88 6 лет назад
Great video!! Can you ask the developers how much tenacity the HAAT tank has? Also how does dodge/deflection chance play into this? Is that an extra door you have to go through?
@WarriorPresents
@WarriorPresents 6 лет назад
+pduncan88 I believe the tank has between 140 to 180 percent tenacity not a hundred percent on that and the third door is where Dodge / deflection can occur
@pduncan88
@pduncan88 6 лет назад
140 or 180 would be a big difference on how to mod a resistance team for example. If a character has 10 percent evade, then there would be a 75 percent likely chance to stick the debuff for door 3 (100 - 15 - 10)? I figured evade would be a different door completely because a character that evades dodges the attack entirely, while the 15 percent applies only to the chance of applying the debuff.

I think there's something missing when you're talking about door 2. Yes, the ability starts at 100% potency. But if you have an ability at 177% potency, like Captain Han in your example, you don't need 177% tenacity to stop them from getting through door 2. So long as you can get the potency - tenacity < 100%, then they have a chance of not getting through door 2. So, someone with 100% tenacity will stop you 23% of the time at door 2. If they actually got 177% tenacity, that would mean they will resist the effect 100% of the time, but you don't need a 100% resist chance for tenacity to be valuable. Therefore, tenacity and potency are very much relevant in PvP.
@WarriorPresents
@WarriorPresents 6 лет назад
+TomBombadil you are right but most mod for potency on their potent characters about 80%... you would HAVE to Exceed that just to get a tiny percentage chance to not have it apply....
@johnmayer9811
@johnmayer9811 6 лет назад
True, but my point is you can't ignore modding for potency and think you won't get resisted from door 2. It seemed like you were saying potency mods don't really matter for PvP, only for PvE. But maybe I misunderstood.
@WarriorPresents
@WarriorPresents 6 лет назад
+TomBombadil yeah that's totally not what I was saying. What I was saying is that tenacity mods are pretty wasted on characters because everybody mods for potency which means you should probably use your mods for better stats
@johnmayer9811
@johnmayer9811 6 лет назад
Right, but if people realize no one is modding tenacity, then they'll stop modding potency because they will have enough potency even without the mods. In any case, modding speed to get out in front of the debuff is probably more effective than trying to resist it.

@WarriorPresents
@WarriorPresents 6 лет назад
+S Lee well for example with Darth Vader his turn meter removal happens 50% of the time which means it gets stopped half the time at door number 1. Then it goes to Door Number 2 and does a potency tenacity check to see if the character you have has enough potency to apply that turn meter removal

Was looking for info on cls and while you mention him you don’t explain it When he has +100% tenacity does that mean if he has 50% base that it’s doubled to 100%? If so is that 100% from the attacking toons potency eg attacker has 140% potency - 100% there is 40% chance or is it 100% tenacity nothing lands?
@WarriorPresents
@WarriorPresents 6 лет назад
In your scenario where he has 40% tenacity his Zeta would give him another hundred percent putting him at 140%. If an opponent had a debuff that landed a hundred percent of the time they would still need their character to have more than 40% potency to even get a chance. And even if they had a hundred percent potency would still only have a 60% chance of passing the potency tenacity check. This is why that Zeta is so powerful as it can shut down De buffers

So let's say old ben has 1 potency and the opponent hast 99 tenacity. Would that mean 100+1-99 = 2 . So the debuff would go through door 2?

Epic video!!! god like. Will you do a video with the value difference of getting defense/offence as a percentage and defense as a number on a mod. Example two gold mods drop both are identical except one has defense as a percent the other as a number. After upgrade both improve there defense 4 times. Toon A equp. one with a starting defense of 0% and then the other and you see that the one with the percentage on average is X weak then the one that started with a non percent. Also the differance in expected value between hp/protection as a percent and as a number starting on a mod.

I have two questions warrior: 1- I heard once that the level difference between the characters changes the equation, like the rancor who’s lvl 90 or for the non 85 pvp. Is this true? 2 - The tenacity down debuff seems to apply always with my KRU. And it doesn’t say that it can’t be resisted. It even applies on enemies with that tenacity up buff from Rex and chirrut. Is the tenacity down buff an exception?
@viniciuspepino8834

Warrior Presents but I can apply tenacity down on enemies that have tenacity up. I wonder if this particular debuff doesn’t have to pass the second door.
@Sporrik
@Sporrik 6 лет назад
As far as I know, tenacity down goes through tenacity up. I use Dengar (yes I run a BH team) in arena and whenever Rex or someone else applies Tenacity up, I use his AoE and it hits them with tenacity down. Dengar's AoE applies it based off of critical hits, not potency, so unless this changes it then I think tenacity down can go through.

Was wondering if you're planning on doing a video of how you would change your modding strategy now that you have this information. For example I stack a ton of potency on my resistance team Right now, but am noticing not much of a difference in being able to apply expose than before in pve, basically I used to be in the 40s and now in the 70s potency on everyone. For example even with over 70 percent potency on the big three, they were almost unable too land debuffs on mobs in the Ground War event.

@WarriorPresents
@WarriorPresents 6 лет назад
+Nathan Crocker no 65% chance to get through door number 2 if you use your above stats
@WarriorPresents
@WarriorPresents 6 лет назад
+Nathan Crocker each door is a separate equation see you can't create a single equation for all
@nathancrocker3894
@nathancrocker3894 6 лет назад
Right, each door is its own step. In my example after door 2 the probability is 65%. I think I had door 3 wrong. It shaves of 15% of attempts no matter what, right? Door 3 is always 85%. Door 2 is the only part of the equation that I have any control over. But there has to be an equation for the probability the debuff will land. My best guess is Because door 1 is 100% = 1 and door 2 is the difference between attacking potency and defending tenacity 140-75 P(door 2 and door 3)=P(door2 )X P(door3) =65% x 85%= 55.25% That daze would be applied. If it was its basic at 70% chance of offence down P(d1 and d2 and d3) = P(d1) x P(d2) x P(d3) =70% x 65% x 85% = 38.68%
@WarriorPresents
@WarriorPresents 6 лет назад
+Nathan Crocker you're mathematically trying to combine all three doors. You go through the first door and then you have to go through the next door and then you go to the last door they're not mathematically combined
@nathancrocker3894
@nathancrocker3894 6 лет назад
They have to be mathematically combined. There are three imputes, the doors. There is one output, the debuff sticks or doesn't. The game must use a function of the three doors to determine if the debuff is applied. Even if all three are applied independent of each other there must be a order and a probability can be determined from that.

Warrior Presents so correct me if I’m wrong, if Dooku has 125% Potency and CLS has like 6% Tenacity (random numbers), Dooku can apply the effects because he has higher potency than CLS’ tenacity? Therefore the higher number determines whether the status effect applies or not?

+Johnny Boy the issue is the three different doors are not one equation it's three separate equations that occur
@gazzadthomas
@gazzadthomas 6 лет назад
Warrior Presents. Three separate equations that he has just applied probability too though right? 70% chance through door 1. 90% chance through door 2 and 85% chance through door 3. You can multiple them out to give you definitive odds. What's the issue with that because that's the way I understand it. Curious to know if I've missed something.
@johnnyboy3563
@johnnyboy3563 6 лет назад
+Warrior Presents They are conditional on each one occurring. Example. Say door 1 is 100% because ability always applies, then door 2 is 100% residual pot, then door 3 is 85%, the three multiplied is 85%, which is what you would expect. On the other extreme, if even 1 door is 0%, example target has tenacity up, the probability is 0%. The rules of conditional probability hold.
@trygvesolberg739
@trygvesolberg739 6 лет назад
It's conditional probability and independent events.. The Probability for getting through door B isn't affected by the result of getting through door A, (or the probability of door C). Simplified the percentage chance of getting through a door doesn't change whatever the outcome of the other doors. E.g R2D2 basic stun A:80% B: 100+potency-tenacity % C: 85%. *The percentage numbers sticks* Therefore P(A)*P(B)*P(C) is valid, and is the equation according to the laws of conditional probability and independent events. Which also shows; If you can't get through one door, your debuff won't stick. As warrior stated and Johnny Boy explained
@johnnyboy3563
@johnnyboy3563 6 лет назад
Lord Thaos Yes exactly. Like flipping a coin three times. Getting all three tails is 1/2 * 1/2 * 1/2 = 1/8. You need to pass all three doors, only difference is the probabilities are not fixed at 50%.

I think this explanation makes things much more difficult than it really is. The chance to resist is simply Tenacity - Potency, with a minimum of 15%. So, if you have 50% potency, the enemy has 50% tenacity, you have a 15% chance to be resisted (and thereby, an 85% chance to land your debuff).

+Vohbo Vohborian incorrect...
