Let's have a close look at the Potensic ATOM, a sub250g drone with a 3-axis gimbal-stabilized 4K camera! We'll go through what comes in the box, check out it's app and how to launch. Then we'll try out the camera stabilization, return-to-home capability, and finally try visual tracking and quick shots. I identify pros and cons all along the way.

Potensic ATOM SE was my first drone. Great drone. Very resilient. Happy to see they have added a 3 axis gimbal. Will make it so much better to have a horizontal horizon.

I have a Mini 2 and a Mini 4 pro. This reminds me of the mini 2. The price point is very reasonable. I did crash my 2 which is why I bought a 4 so it would avoid obstacles.

This looks like a really good option for those who, for whatever reason, might not want to buy from DJI. On a dull day, the colours on the trees looked spectacular and the whole package seems to do very well. BTW - are we to have a series of 'Don's Rules' - like Gibbs' Rules - with the first being, 'if the drone faces you, you must wave' ?

This seems very similar to the DJI Mini 2, which is still my go to drone when travelling outside of Canada or flying in sub freezing temps. I'm kind of wondering if they have ND filters for this. The Fly More kit is a sweet deal, especially for those looking to get into drones for the first time.

Yes, it's a pretty good package! I haven't seen ND filters for it...they would have to have clips around the camera nacelle since there are no locking holes on the front.

Thanks for sharing Don. I'm not really much of a drone pilot and have only had experience with the Potensic Dreamer. It was kind of big and really didn't have a very good camera. The controller wouldn't open up enough to fit my Stylo 6 phone. I honestly don't think I would be into wearing goggles but it would be nice if you can fit a large phone or even a small tablet into the controller. Some of us old guys have bad eye sight but still want to fly drones. This looks like a winner for sure. Mainly for the price and incredible video resolution. Great job on this video.

Thanks! Yeah, a Stylo 6 is a full cm taller than my Pixel 7 Pro, so I don't think it would fit. A DJI Mini 3 or 4 with the nice built-in screen in the controller may be a great option for you.

I have a bunch of DJI drones, Mini 3, Mini 3 Pro, Mini 4 Pro, AIR 2S, AIR 3, & DJI FPV Drone, all are fly more combos with RC & RC 2 Controllers, I also have the Integra Goggles Motion 2 Combo. I just got the Autel Evo Lite + Premium Bundle on the 18th of this month, & I got the Atom 3 Axis Gimbal Fly More Combo about 10 minutes ago. I only bought the Evo Lite Plus, so I had a decent Drone without Geofencing. I got the Atom for a non Geofenced back up to the Autel. I haven't opened the Autel yet. But I'm going to try out the Atom today lol.

@@DonJoyce I just flew three batteries threw the Potensic Atom & it sure isn't a DJI lol. I'm used too great cameras & excellent range. Im loosing a bar of signal strength, with the atom at 100 meters. I did push it out to 1 kilometer, & still had control of the camera & drone, but it only had 2 bars of signal strength, & the cameras image quality isnt what I hoped for. I guess I've been spoiled, by All my DJI drones. I hope my Autel Evo Lite + is somewhat on par with my other DJI drones. Im going to give this Atom to my son.

I thank you for the comprehensive and insightful tutorial based on which I have shortlisted this drone. I however have a query regarding the app and the need for internet connection to login each time. My primary utility of this drone is in remote areas without internet access. Will the app function/ login be enabled in such areas?

The app does not require internet access to fly the drone, only for things like updates to the app itself.

Mate nothing wrong with that, what a great little drone. Camera looks good. is it a 1 1/3 sensor? It looks to be about $500 AU which is a pretty good price. Nice mate, enjoyed. Cheers :)

Yes, definitely a good drone. They may give DJI a run for their money. The only sensor information I can find says, "Equipped with 𝟏/𝟑’’ 𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐘 𝐂𝐌𝐎𝐒 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐫 and a 𝟏𝟐𝐌𝐏 camera capable of recording 𝟒𝐊/𝟑𝟎𝐟𝐩𝐬 video". Thanks for watching, Matt!

An excellent review and tutorial Don. A fairly impressive sub205g drone and great that it has the 3-axis gimbal. Looks like a good alternative to say the Mini 2 depending on price.

I bought one of these drones the other day. Awesome little drone and takes great quality photos and videos. The only downside i've found is the lightning cable connector into the iphone doesn't hold a connection. It's loose in the phone and keeps disconnecting. Not sure if it's my lightning connection on the phone that is to blame, but i need a workaround to be able to fly.

Glad to hear you like the drone! The cable from the controller to the phone is just a standard usb-c to lightning cable, with 90 degree ends ... Just get a replacement from Amazon and try it.

I'm not a great evaluator of video quality...at least from a technical perspective. It seemed very good and comparable to DJI mini 4 pro to me. But that was a nice day with even lighting. Can't speak to low light. I'm not sure if you can buy Nd filters for it either.

Hi Don.. Have you by any chance updated the firmware recently on the Atom? I updated yesterday 23/11/23 and the video quality now is absolutely terrible.. Its now just a blurry mess in 4k.. all fine details trees/branches/grass is just like a watercolour painting.. During the update it said gimble tweaks, noise reduction in low light has been improved, white balance has been improved amongst other things have all been updated. I guess its the noise reduction thats ruined image quality... wondering if you suffered the same effect after update!

My friend has the Atom se model and its sucks the horizon can't even level on all his videos due to a single axis. I'll pay a bit more for the DJI instead. Even this one with 3 axis, I'll choose DJI over this as this charge more money anyway I rather go for the DJI.

I bought one of these ATOM drones mainly because of your review. It's my first drone and overall I'm satisfied with the purchase but my videos aren't nowhere near as stable as yours (and other reviewers I've checked). Most of my videos have a visible wavy / jelly distortion. I checked the blades, did the calibration and it has never crashed so I have no idea what's wrong. Wow! That is definitely bad. I heard someone else mention that a firmware was released recently that seemed to trigger this. I suggest you contact Potensic technical support and report it. They may have a solution in the works. That is NOT right!

Did you read the user agreement before running the app? Did you swear allegiance to the People's Republican China and their government? Did you acknowledge that everything that you take on your drone film and photos belongs to them? If you clicked "yes", then you did.

@@DonJoyce Microsoft does not have a standing army. I suggest you use a phone that is not hooked to a cell phone service and use a "burner" email to sign up for an account. Login in via wifi to get the app and firmware updates. Don't be "numb and dumb" when dealing with the CCP.

It's nice they added optical tracking. But why oh why oh why didn't they keep and improve GPS follow-me?

Yes, the visual tracking seemed to work well. Can't comment on the GPS tracking...did they have that?

@@DonJoyce If you do a couple steps in the local park yes it works. Soon you go on a bike trip it hopelessly fails. It only follows from behind, without obstacle avoidance, and I don't have eyes in the back of my head. Watching the phone screen is not an option. I won't even start about all the times you have to stop if it loses you. And the Atom SE had GPS follow-me. But programmed completely wrong. My $135 drone does it perfectly so no reason why Potensic or DJI or Autel or Fimi can't. But you have to understand what works and what doesn't.

@@DonJoyce I have tried to get other companies to listen too. Never an answer. And most reviewers only know DJI,s Active-track so they don't understand either how exactly follow-me can and should work.
