Potential Lies to You

I wanted to test potential for some time, but it took me a long time to get the brain cells going to come up with a way to tease the info on potential stars out of Football Manager. I am fully aware I get dumped on for not controlling variables so I’ve set out to do that when talking about potential because few things are more important in FM. I mean, what if your wonderkid is not a wonderkid at all? That’s a disaster story that has already befallen me in FM21.
If I missed a part of this or you have another idea about the extenuating circumstances that could affect potential ratings of your players in football manager, please do actually let me know. I spent a good day thinking of how I could cover this and the solution was surprisingly simple and involved no scouting at all (thank goodness). Everything is easier with the editor!
Sincerely,

This completely changes my perspective on Youth Intakes. Maybe those "meh, he's gonna be trash or riding the bench forever" 16/17 year olds aren't as bad as we thought and my very good scouting department/Youth Development team doesn't deserve to get fired after all.

It's quite realistic. Think of all the failed wonderchilds at 17 or 18 y/o, who play at a mediocre lever 5 years later. Of course you can only have an accurate potential as older the player is

Some turn out to be Iker Muniain where injury prevents the Messi like ceiling but still turns out to be a very serviceable player in La Liga at Athletic Club. He isn't world class, but one of the youngest players to ever have 400+ appearances at a club despite the injuries. Edit: Yet others are Jose Baxter, Baxter appeared at Everton at the same age Muniain appeared in Bilbao or Messi became scary. Baxter proved to be durable but never improved after the age of 18 and eventually was in the lower leagues of English football.

maybe it takes into account injuries at a young age being more detrimental to their progress, like on average in 100 simulations if 5 times they get a bad injury they only get to half their potential then it'll bring the average down half a star or something

@Embetebe

It could be a simple bit of hard coding that 16 year old's potential rating is deliberately made to hit a ceiling in order to stop people buying up all the 16 year old wonderkids. By forcing it so that the true potential is only more visible once they are in their 17s would give other teams a year of opportunity to identify the player and compete with you for the signing. Worth remembering a lot of countries require players to play for 3 years for your team before the age of 20 in order to be considered home grown and hit quotas. Depending on the country, only discovering the wonderkid aspect once they are 17 might disqualify them from gaining the home grown flag.

I apologize in advance for off-topic but since you've mentioned home grown players I need to ask. In my first season I gained promotion to Finnish Premier League and no decent (I'm saying Finnish league 2.5/5 caliber) home grown player wanted to sign for me. Okay. I just got promoted so it was expected. For some reason board tells me I need to get to playoffs(first 6 teams)? With heavy grinding I get it done, finishing 5th at the end. So logically, now at least decent home grown players from second league will want to play for me, right? Well, couldn't be more wrong. NO ONE home grown with a grade above 9 wants to sign for me (money isn't that big of an issue, they keep complaining about the club). Tons of players from second league refused to talk with me about joining. I have a team full of foreigners now and I need to have 4 home grown on field at all times and 9 home grown in total (7 on bench). To make things absolutely absurd, the board decided that this year I need to qualify for Europe? This is borderline unplayable and I'm considering quitting. Any advice would be highly appreciated.

Realistically, if Zealand (who I say would have low JPA/P in the game) saw a 22 year old with that kind of CA he'd say that guy is bad. This is honestly a great video which provides definitive proof that age influences scout reports. Imho, Zealand is the singular best FM RU-vidr; consistently provides amazing content and can has an ability to clearly and concisely explain quite complex game mechanics. But I wonder if CA has an influence on the ability to judge potential too. Just a hunch, but I think that logically it would make sense (at least irl, idk about FM's mechanics). It would be quite difficult to look at a player who is currently not very good and then attempt to accurately determine just how much he can improve. On the other hand, if you have a player in their late-teens / early 20s who already has a CA of (for example) 120-130, I think it would be able to easier say "yeah, this kid is already good and at his age he is only going to get better. He could end up becoming the real deal".

I remember reading how when Alex Ferguson saw Paul Scholes for the first time, he said: “He’s got no chance, he’s a midget.” Even the best managers and scouts in the world will disagree over the potential of the same player. I get that 20 is top for scouting, but it shouldn't be taken as that means it's a perfect scout. It's the best a human could possibly be at scouting and predicting into the future... which is always going to have massive variance. It'd be more accurate to say there's variability rather than that potential lies to you... it's more like it's tricky to get a specific and fully accurate estimate of potential (or at least the scout's reports should be taken with a grain of salt).

Along with Potential rating, you need to change the other hidden attributes such as 'consistency, professionalism, pressure' which will help player growth and avoid 'injury, bad tempermant which hinders growth. Also before scouting give it a few weeks on the game as the scouts dont seem to pick up the changes to the player database straight away.

I did play an FM save with the editor turned on and would check the the players potential and stuff. Didn't change anything, just sneak peaked at that juicy potential and from my findings, you are correct, the younger a player is, worse is the scout at judging him. Also, at youth intake, just because your couches say at best 3* potential when the intake comes in doesn't mean that's their potential. I had guys with 160 potential which was huge for my team and the head of youth thought he was a 4* at best, after a month or even a few weeks, he realized that the player was a 5* instead... Also, I found a Czech newgen player with 198 potential that I absolutely threw all my money at him and kept him playing in Romania until I decided he won me the Champions League :D also, another finding was that once the player passes 23 yo it's harder for a small club to get a good offer for a player unless you already are a rich club and the player is at worldclass level and playing every match later edit: oh, also, there are also 16 yo newgens that start with CA of 120 for instance, but their PA is about 125... not joking... just because they're young and good, doesn't necessarily mean that's a guaranteed 150 PA. they might never become any better than they currently are even thou they have almost 20 years at their disposal to improve their game

I'm not sure if you use a different camera or if the whitebalance is a bit off. When you are in your room you look crisp, sharp with a pleasent amount of blueness' in the shot which makes it cool. But in the intro it looks less sharp and very green. Maybe in the editing take a bit of green away from the highlights, by adding purple and then very slightly add green back in the shadows (if that is needed). Or add a bit of blue in the edit in the intro, so that the shot in the intro and the rest of the video looks the same. Perhaps it is more the lighting in the introroom that it is green, but still you migth be able to fix it in the edit. Not sure which editing program your editors is using but with premiere pro that is very easily done with the lumetri color effect and then under color wheel & match. Just my 2 pennies worth of feedback. The rest is great!

Yeah, the camera he used for the intro isn't that great, I'll suggest to him maybe looking to upgrade at some point. The color is definitely off so for the future I'll ask what Zealand wants to be done about that. I personally don't mind it looking different than the rest of the video since it's clearly its own skit and not the core of the video.

Once i found a regen Romanian player who was 16 at that time, i thought that he looks really good for that age, and i sent Scout for a report, he came back with a report of 55 and said that he is going to be bad. But I saw that all the big clubs are Interested in him, so i took my chances and bought him for 6 million and he later on became a world class player. Soooo, f*ck Scout reports and coach reports.

back in fm20 on one of my first saves i signed Gabriel Barbossa for Arsenal, as a replacement for Lacazette. The 4.5 star potential never really kicked in and he was borderline terrible, oustcored by 5 or 6 players in a young squad. Managed to go into the CL final on my second season where he missed 3 or 4 chances and I ended up losing. I sold him for a small profit and 4 or 5 seasons into the future he managed to go back to Brasil. One of the biggest flops in my fm career and I'm still pissed that I couldn't pull out the best of him.

In the game notes when the game launched they did say that PA would be able to change over time if the player did or did not get the career opportunities and experience to reach their potential. As a 16yo player this future is much cloudier than at 21yo, and at 27 its less likely the player will develop before they age out. If the player is properly developed from the beginning of their career not only could they reach their potential but they could increase their PA too. But thanks for proving it! PS - Don't forget that star rating is also relative to the other players on your team too, so if you have a lot of PA 200 players it becomes "average" and suddenly they are all rated 4stars max.

Hey all, I'm kind of new to FM21, What is the difference between the yellow star and the white stars when it comes to ratings? I'd guess that at a certain age some attributes improve more than others. For example young players (16-17yo) grow better in physical abilities than 20 year olds do. Those improve more in mental abilities 18-19 year olds grow in technical abilities more than in physicality. Hence these fluctuations occur. For some playing roles physical ability isn’t necessary. If then the PA doesn’t get used up for physical growth, then the player will improve more in the mental and technical attributes, which influence the star rating more. I hope you could get my point and maybe this could be true

I find it strange that attributes don't whim to ability, you could have 20s in all attributes and the player would still be 1* would love to see how he'd play? Would he rise to his potential or would the CA hold him back? Seen a few times where attributes look brilliant but the player itself is average or what you not expect but then you get your "jesse lingards" that don't excel in anything but absolutely show up in form and are vital to the team.

You need a more consistent and larger group of scouts/coaches and not just one player. 20 JPP still isn't perfect, so is it just player age or is he not getting an accurate read on this particular player. You need to retry all this with lots of 20 JPP staff looking at lots of players to get results we can form a conclusion on. I'd guess that it's kind of related, the younger the player, the more things are likely to go wrong before he reaches his potential your staff will hedge their bets on the potential to a larger range?

I have found 2 regens with 200 ability out of 200+ regens in my playing time of 600 hours. 1 was a central midfielder on my Manchester United team through my own youth intake, whilst the other was a central defender out of Bordeaux for some reason. When the 20 scout was judging the 16 year old 200 potential at 4.5 it seemed as if (I know this isn’t the case) he was hesitant to call him 5 stars and was doing that to give some wiggle room. Like when someone is called “the next messi” at 16 years old, it’s like he knows he’s 5 star but he was just giving himself room for error to play it safe

Hi all....The star potential rating .... rather than a simple representation of what a players potential ability is (200 = 5* etc) it probably more a representation of the ability the player is likely to attain. The player could have 200 potential but there will be other traits that will stop him reaching that potential, or getting near it . We know that coaching has an impact on a player development in the game as does attitude, how injury prone etc. Similarly I would assume that there would be additional coaching/ scout attributes that will be used in conjunction with JPP/ JPA which are used to create an accurate star rating. So probably not a simple case of 200 potential = will be a monster player or 20 JPP = will find you all the wonderkids.

brother, if you ask me the 1JPA was the most accurate in terms of the CA vs PA, you ll say that i am crazy but listen to me: the more you get the player closer to his peak age of stopping the evolution into his potential, the lower the stars should be as there is no more potential to develop. So for example, at the age of 22, with the current attributes, despite the potential set to 200 , he is a 2 star potential player...for me that is accurate as he can no longer develop
