Fault - Central Heating not working but we have hot water - conclusion 3 way valve motor not working.
This is MY Combi boiler & I've gone step by step through the User's manual, if you're not competent just find a plumber - DON'T touch the gas bits. PS I got it checked afterwards, thanks.

These 3 part videos are classic, with no gimmicks, just a man trying to fix his boiler without paying over the odds to fix it. Just what I needed.

Mark, thank you for doing this video series. Has helped educate me on the parts and components to my boiler and the understanding of what each bit does. It has also assisted me on dealing with an issue I have had with my boiler (same make and model). Don’t listen to the people who have told you off regarding these videos. People need to understand that some people actually like to learn about equipment, and you have actually not just opened the boiler & started taking items apart, you have in fact read the manual and done research regarding parts & fitting etc Anyway from me to you, thank you so much!!

Hi Mark great video. My sister's boiler had exactly the same problem. I fixed it temporarily by bending the spring round, while a new one is on its way! I salute you sir. We need videos from diyers like yourself to help the rest of us who give things a go too.

Good on you mate. I have same boiler and learned a bit watching this. As long as I don't touch the gas seals, pipes and gaskets I can do most jobs or preventative maintenance tasks.. it's good to know you have some new sensors and a stepper motor for the diverter valve that shouldn't give you bother for a while.... Some of the so called plumbers can try take a liberty.. the last one I had out bullshitted me just to get out the door .. he turned down the mains stopcock to slow flowrate through the heat exchanger to allow me to pour a hot bath.. was just masking the real problem and gave me more grief as the said stopcock feeds me and my neighbour if I ran a bath ( or any tap) all other taps in mine and neighbours were reduced to a dribble ,and vise versa, what a saga 4 visits later. So sometimes your Gonny have to give it a go fitting some suspect parts at cost price as long as your competent enough . Power to you

My next job is changing the spark electrode at some point as it was highlighted last service at a cost of nearly 100 quid to do. Because the electrodes were slightly warped away from each other. Now I'm only a mechanic but could it not be bent back or regapped like a spark plug??? Anyway I can get a supposed revised part for 14 quid

Yeh, the brass divertor gets a slow weep from the actuator pushrod area. Which overtime finds it's way into divertot actuator & rot's it to pieces. So changing the broken actuator fixes the fault, but to sort the heart of the problem, the divertor gubbin's themselves need a overhaul. Good work.

For the initial d.v motor head securing clip to be corroded like that, the d.v cartridge (spring loaded spindle inside brass body) must of been letting by at some point. Keep an eye on the boiler, if you develop a drip on the left hand side, it is more than likely that diverter valve cartridge. Also, be careful it doesn't leak through into the head and short the pcb (240v supply to that d.v head) - fingers crossed it will all be okay though :)

Had a plumber out yesterday to deal with a leak in our boiler (same model), says it's the diverter valve, except he never looked at the swimming pool of orange water in the chamber above. Just because they call themselves plumbers doesn't mean they're actually competent and worth the money...

@pjezdik3591

You don't need a new boiler you need a better break down engineer. He is just guessing. You can check all these components with a multi meter to see if they have the correct power to them or if they are holding the correct resistance. Without buying the part and just trying it out. The proper way a engineer should be identifying a issue is to get a multi meter out and check the components and know what they are doing to start with. Just guessing isn't the right way and then it's spending other people's money. It's not right. I am a Heating engineer myself.

Taken from Gas Safe website just saying :P What gas work can I do myself? The definition of gas ‘work’ is quite wide ranging but you can perform the tasks set out in the user’s instructions, (provided by the appliance manufacturer) that are intended for the user to carry out. This would not be a breach of the law. The law allows you to replace or adjust any component or control that is designed to be operated, or replaced by the gas consumer e.g. a cooker tap control knob. However you should not do anything that involves disturbing the gas carrying components (such as the gas supply pipe) or that could affect the combustion process (such as removing the combustion case of an appliance What gas work can be undertaken by other tradespersons? If the work required only involves the replacement of a non gas component such as a water circulating pump or central heating control valve, housed within the boiler’s decorative casing, the work could be undertaken by another competent tradesperson e.g. plumber/electrician. Providing the work could be undertaken without having to break a combustion chamber seal

Tit for brains removed the front combustion chamber panel to replace a dhw thermister. So illegal in all cases.

My Potterton Gold combi has the same diverter valve assembly. Although it is barely six years old the cartridge and actuator have had to be replaced every 12-15 months because water leaks from the top of the cartridge into the actuator and destroys it. After being charged £240 each time by plumbers, I bought both parts on E-bay for £29 total and did the job myself-it's not difficult. I have now done it three times-at first try it took me an hour and a half, but now I have whittled it down to twenty--five minutes. I estimate I have saved in excess of £700. Incidently-how come the plumbers were charging me fifty pounds for both the cartridge and the actuator? I keep an eye on it now so that I can replace the leaking cartridge before it leaks into the actuator, so the change I did last week cost me only £13!

@@stephensmith5648 Thanks Stephen, my combi is coming up to 8 years old but has always had inhibitor in it. I think the problem with the leaking diverter is a design flaw.

@patablett6741 4 года назад
@@brucemaclennan9879 thank for replying you are correct it's the heat exchanger at the bottom (at least that's what I believe its called) I have managed to fix it by putting cleaner in the Central Heating and tapping the heat exchanger with a rubber mallet or in my case a rubber cooking slice 😂 so for now debris is dislodged, I will be putting another cleaner in at some point as I have a radiator to add, then the inhibitor.

A couple of points: any decent engineer should have diagnosed your fault in 15 mins, you technically can not repair a gas appliance unless your are GasSafe registered.

@MrMeltedwellies 7 лет назад
I was told by a mate who plumbed the whole of a school, so long you are competent you can work on your OWN boiler, but must get it checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer after the work's done (by him)so i am lucky

I'm having the same problem, however ive noticed that your pressure gauge didn't rise although the temperature raised. my symptoms are the same but also include raised pressure into the red. I wonder if its the same part causing the problem. I got raped by a heating engineer the other day, came out, didn't even take the cover off, charged me £65 call out and buggered off. Time to find the solution myself. Or maybe employ a Doctor or a Lawyer because their hourly rate is much less.
