Nice step by step that removes the intimidation away from this mod. Thanks. Tried the tool making video and I am regularly getting my students to make their own now.

Very interesting video. I've always been glad my L&L came with a vent system. In addition to the evening out of temperatures and the obvious benefit of venting fumes to the exterior, it also minimizes the time that fugitive emissions have to affect your elements as well as assuring that oxygen depleted from glaze oxidation reactions will be replaced. PLUS, you get to open your kiln sooner too to see the goodies !!!

Thanks Mary! There's not a lot of info out there about this, so I hoped it might help a few people. I think this type of venting is very important for safely and evening out the temperature throughout the kiln for better glaze results.

What is the surface temperature of the kiln with the vent kit running?

Very helpful. Going to be setting up my wife's new Kiln in the future. This really helped. Any certain exhaust hood on the outside of the house? We have a sprinkler system in the area where the Kiln will be. Understand you have to be careful with the placement due to sprinkler heads? Finally, is there a recommended height for the exhaust pipe to be? Noticed yours was above the concrete foundation but if you don't have a foundation can it be much lower to the ground?
@EvolutionStoneware
@EvolutionStoneware 2 года назад
To my knowledge it doesn't matter at what height you mount blower. Mounting it lower should be fine. Perhaps you could put a dryer vent style external cover on the vent outlet to prevent water from getting in from the sprinklers. Here's a link to the Envirovent manual. skutt.com/pdf/envirovent2/Envirovent2_Manual.pdf

Thanks for this! We’re about to drill holes in our second-hand kiln and it was nice to watch someone else do it first.

Loved this video, for some reason I couldn’t find info from the manufacturer of my kiln on how to vent, other than the system they sell. Did you use a masonry bit or jus a regular drill bit?
@EvolutionStoneware
@EvolutionStoneware 3 года назад
A regular drill bit is all you need. The brick is very soft and easy to drill through. I'm so glad to hear this helped! Thanks for taking the time to drop a nice note. Hope your vent installation goes well.

Where to buy the vent kit?

I have a small duncan kiln and I usually fire it with the top peep hole open. I am wondering if I drill holes into the bottom for my vent, would the peephole be enough air flow in or do you need the holes drilled into the lid? Thanks!
@EvolutionStoneware
@EvolutionStoneware 2 года назад
The peep hole will be too much. You need to drill the holes in the bottom and top for the vent to have the correct air flow balance.

Hello, can you please tell me whether the Envirovent 2 is supposed to be run continuously for the entire duration of the firing cycle, or only a portion of it? If it gets controlled by the KilnLink, does the blower turn off at certain times during the firing cycle? Also, how hot does the 3" flexible metal duct get while firing? Will it be too hot to touch? If so, is it acceptable to wrap the duct in insulation to prevent burns or could doing so potentially damage the blower due to overheating? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks for uploading such a helpful video!
@EvolutionStoneware
@EvolutionStoneware 3 года назад
Run it for the whole firing including the cool down. Mine is manual and not connected to Kiln Link. It has a toggle switch on the cord. Just flip it on and leave it on. The 3" duct amazingly doesn't get hot at all. Hope that helps!

I have a used kiln I just acquired. It is a 3 year old cress firemate. it has installed a Cress clean air exhaust system. I have put it in a metal garden shed with a cement floor. The tube comes out of the box, which is below the kiln switch box. (It is a kiln-sitter kiln). The problem is I have no idea what to do with the tube. Do I need to align the kiln so that the tube comes straight back from the exhaust fan, or can it wrap around the base before snaking up the wall? I also need to know how high on the wall I need to go before installing the tube into a dryer-type steel vent we bought with a little hood so the air from the kiln comes out and then down. Any advice?

Hi Jaime, I'm no expert on that system, but here's my gut feel. The height shouldn't really matter. You may want to raise it up a couple feet to keep the exhaust opening away from critters like mice outside. And I would try to keep the hose run as direct as possible minimizing turns and kinks. You can put in a sweeping arc but avoid tight bends. That's what I would do, but take it with a grain of salt. You should definitely use metal hose not crinkly foil dryer hose. You don't need a rigid duct, but you need the curvable, round, metal hose. Hope that helps! Congrats on your kiln!

Hi, the plenum cup has two openings aside from the one where you are attaching your air-duct. Do you leave those open? should they not be blocked off? when you turn your exhaust fan on will it not also suck air from the room's floor? or is there not a chance that the air that will be coming out of the kiln will simply escape into the room via those openings if the motor of the exhaust fan is not strong enough? Thanks, just curious... I'm getting mine soon and just wondering how this actually works.
@EvolutionStoneware
@EvolutionStoneware 3 года назад
Hi Luc, they are designed to be open. I found it strange at first too. Even with the openings it still pulls air through the kiln. You can test it by closing the kiln, putting the peeps in, turning the fan on, and holding a blown out match that's still smoking right over one of the holes in the lid. The smoke will be drawn in. I don't know the details of the manufacturer's design parameters, but they set up the number and size of vent holes in the lid & the kiln floor to move a specific volume of air over time through the kiln. And the fan pulls additional room air through those holes in the plenum and blows it outside.

Hi. Do you know if a DIY version of this could be just as safe/ effective if done properly?
@EvolutionStoneware
@EvolutionStoneware 3 года назад
I don't know. The key would be to try to get all the same parts. The most important would be sizing the blower properly. I don't know the CFM or size of it. The plenum is a very unique part also.

Melissa, that’s a very good question. There must be a way to make the vent. I know people who have made them. But I wonder if it’s worth your time.

OR visit us @ www.ventakiln.com and remove the HEAT and fumes from the kiln's exterior walls as-well-as from the natural leaks that all kilns have. Here is a copy / paste address to put into your browser for a short kiln ventialtion video! www.dropbox.com/s/erojivwxbwqwfrz/Ven-a-Kiln%20MASTER03.mp4?dl=0

One note... firebrick contains silica. I'm not seeing a lot of dust from the drilling, but wearing a hepa filter mask is always a good idea with silica dust.
