I like your content and have been following for a while. I have a request, can you please angle the camera down or move it further back? it is positioned to high above your head and it is really off putting to watch. I keep trying to look past it but I can’t focus on what you are saying because I’m disoriented by the angle. There is not enough of your lower body in the shot. Thank you.

How do you watch when you’ve got other kids that are needing attention?
@AndreaOlson
@AndreaOlson Год назад
Well I have 6 of them, so I know how it goes!! The only way to do it is to GET HELP. If you have a partner, it would be great for them to take care of the home and other children while you focus on potty training (ESPECIALLY important for the first 2 days). Or perhaps hiring a babysitter or taking kids to a grandparent or working on it when the others are at school or daycare... Take a look at the calendar and find at least 4 days in a row to commit to it, and definitely reach out to your community for help 💕 👍

Dear Andrea, I was following your instructions, it was awesome. Yesterday, I took my 11months old baby to bathroom. He hated passing pee, because I took him nearly 10times to bathroom, so he hated go to bathroom. So I have decided to start potty training after a few days.

Around that age its common to see baby wanting more independence and refusing to go potty when YOU want them to! Here is some info www.godiaperfree.com/196 👍 all the best!!

Do I leave them naked so that I am able to observe their cues ? I have 10months old twin boys
@AndreaOlson
@AndreaOlson 6 лет назад
At 10 months old you should look into elimination communication, not potty training. If you do begin EC, you start with naked observation for a few hours a day. That way you can learn baby's timing and signals.

One of my Twins is resisting potty doesn’t like to sit on it. Lately I’ve only been putting him on in the morning just to establish the routine for myself and get them in the habit before I remove diaper completely. Any tips to get him to stay on the potty ?

The other twin has picked it up very quickly already pooped in potty twice and peed in the morning in 3 separate occasions:D!

Distractions are a great way to keep kids sitting. Books, bubbles, a special toy, a cup of water, etc. I'm so glad to hear that it is going well for one kiddo, that will help the other kiddo get the idea too.

Thank you for your book! We’ve been doing ec since birth! Now I’m looking to get my baby out of diapers as a back up for pee. He has always worn cloth diapers as backup. He does most poop in the potty. Should we take away diapers and just start to potty train? He is 12 months old. Is that too early to no longer depend on backup diapers?

Dear Andrea, I am potty training my almost 21 month old. We've been doing EC since he was 3 months and started to put him in undies around 18 months. Personality wise he takes a LONG time learning how to do and be confident in learning how to do something. He's proven this with everything. (Crawling, walking, trying real foods) However, I'm slightly concerned that I've truly missed something/ screwed something up. Again, we're approaching our third month doing this. He seems to be going into a potty pause and is resisting even being offered the potty at all. We work on "push undies down" and "pull undies up" every time. I sign for potty most of the time (I do honestly forget sometimes, but most of the time it's second nature at this point with him being my second EC baby. ) I've tried placing him on a seat reducer and he just cried. Help, because honestly I'm on the verge of tears.

Hi mama! I do have a solution for you! 🙌 At 21 months, and with the resistance you are seeing, it is time to really give him all the tools and independence he needs to do it himself! Since you are seeing so much resistance now, I would recommend a "reset"... basically just go back to diapers for a week or two and do no potty stuff unless he asks. During that time, gather your resources to start potty training and make a solid plan. My Tiny Potty Training book is excellent to help you with that process in a way that really encourages independence in the process and makes a clean break from all the teaching/learning he's done with EC before.🥰 Check out this free class as a start godiaperfree.com/starting-potty-training/

Back again!! Thank you for the ray of sunshine!! Toddler is now 2.5 yo. We got TPTB early on, and did our full PTing time wrapped up at 18 months, so basically a year ago. With the business of life, we still had diapers around. Toddler started waiting to pee in car rides and nap time, then started to like the wet diaper. So I ripped off the diaper bandaid at just over 2 years old. We had some misses in the car, but are finally over that, and she's telling us and holding pee when on longer trips, and yes we still have a potty in the car for quick stops. Nap times are no issues anymore. No issues with poops for a long time. But overnight 😑 She was getting up and going for a while. Yelling for Dad. Then, started going by herself. Then would change panties by herself, so we would her and change towels. Then she started to sleep in the pee 😑 Currently, I am setting an alarm for 2a & 7a to do a night pee or change sheets. Sometimes she will not use the potty. If you could please point me to resources you have on this, much help appreciated!! Oh and all the bladder control and weak bladder videos are driving me crazy since I've listened to your helpful advice for several years 😆 Then started sleeping in

Well, each child is very different, so it is possible that her body really is not ready to hold it all night (there are genetic, hormonal and developmental factors that affect our ability to hold all night). Almost all of my resources on this topic are for EC at night which is quite a bit different, though the TPTB nighttime section will be a good place to start. I also have this little video where I talk a bit about my experience with one of my kids👍 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IVp3jto2N9g.html

Thank you! Are there other things we can also start teaching now instead of waiting until the future? Thanks! (19 months now, working on potty training)
@AndreaOlson
@AndreaOlson 2 года назад
You can do it all at 19 months! A couple things to practice as games might be learning to mount the potty or toilet, and pushing down then pulling up pants. As well as washing hands etc...

Would you potty training aide help with sleep time pottying? My 22 month old twins are day time potty trained(cotton underwear no messes always tell me when they need to potty) but I've been putting then in pullups for their nap and bedtime as a backup and they do sometimes hold it but not reliably and I'm trying to figure out how to get past pullups...
@AndreaOlson
@AndreaOlson 3 года назад
Start with limiting water before nap and night. Also, protect your mattress and go for it. Sometimes it just takes accidents for them to hold through. Do talk to them before nap or night time if you decide to do this. 😊

Just because something is old fashioned doesn't mean its good?Just in terms of what you said about what people did before nappies. For example people used to hang their kids in boxes outside of buildings to get outside time?? Also I have always struggled with the words training because it sounds so militant...thoughts? BTW this is not meant to come of negative, I just discovered you and this concept and its blowing my mind.
@AndreaOlson
@AndreaOlson 5 лет назад
Hi Harriet! When I said to think about what people did before diapers, I meant that they did potty learning much younger than the current "norm". Babies and young toddlers are very capable of using a potty. With the invention of the disposable diaper, and the "study" by Dr Brazelton and Pampers, the average age of potty training completion went from 18 months to over 3 years old.

I am excited to try this with my newborn. I noticed in another video when you were on a trail you left a baby poo under a rock and didn't wipe baby's bum. two things... 1) do you ever carry out the poop? / worry about contaminating nearby water sources 2) no wipe due to lack of wipes on hand or he had a clean bum?
@AndreaOlson
@AndreaOlson 3 года назад
You absolutely can carry out if you prefer. An old yogurt container with a lid that snaps on will fit in a top hat potty, then you can put the lid on when baby is done. Often baby doesn't need wiped. In the EC hold the bum stays much cleaner.

@@AndreaOlson Fascinating! I didn't know baby's bumb doesn't need wiping with EC. Is this only for outdoors? Or anytime while doing EC? (Including at night and at home in the potty?)

My baby is a year old and it's January, I've been wanting to start EC since he was born but was overloaded with the information and well...life. You have helped me so much in cutting through the information overload and I finally feel ready to start EC. My only concern is, it's winter and we live in the mountains. How do I watch for his natural timing and cues without his legs freezing? We stay at home indoors majority of the time, he sleeps in his own room, and all I've been able to ascertain is that he is a stealth pooper and doesn't seem to give ANY indication when he is about to or in the act of peeing. How would you suggest I begin observations?
@AndreaOlson
@AndreaOlson 6 лет назад
Kiersten, you absolutely don't need to have him naked to observe. Put him in socks and some leggings (like BabyLegs), a warm top (that doesn't go too far below his belly button), and what I refer to as a sumo-style diaper, which is a thin cloth diaper or towel tucked between his legs and held in place with a "diaper belt" (which can be something as simple as the elastic waistband cut from an old pair of his pants). The thin diaper will keep him covered but because it's coverless, you can see immediately when he wets, and so get a better handle on his timing. You can do this! :) If you want an in-depth dive into "how to know when to potty", I cover this in my Potty Time Master minicourse.

If we are moving soon, should I wait until we are settled into our new place to start EC? He's met me with resistance, and I feel like it might be a bit much on both of us to start, then stop for the traveling and moving, and then restart in completely new surroundings.
@AndreaOlson
@AndreaOlson 6 лет назад
Hey Kiersten! Remind me how old your little guy is now. If he's already 14+ months and resisting so strongly, I'd plan a potty training experience in a few weeks after you're settled into your new place. Get my Tiny Potty Training book now godiaperfree.com/cm-tpt-book and make your plan, and when you're settled, go for it! If he's under 12 months, part-time EC is a totally do-able option and a way to integrate this in your routine, no matter where you are. Check out my podcast on that here godiaperfree.com/part-time-elimination-communication-explained/. :)

He's 13 months, and by the time we are settled in he will likely be 14 months. I just yesterday replied to your e-mail asking what's holding me back from starting, and there I go more in-depth with our particular situation. Thank you again so much for all your help! I will definitely be getting that book once we're able to. I am completely determined to help him be more independent with his pottying, and Daddy agrees!
