-Potty training tip: every time they eat & play let them out immediately after -Create training: don't yell/punish the dog in the crate. The crate is their safe place, their den. Most dogs won't mess in the same place they sleep
I just got a Cattle Dog/Border Collie mix. Frequent trips outside is also a way to teach your dog other things as well. Your dog should never go out of the door before you, its not only disrepectful, but potentially dangerous if he bolts. In 3 days, I have taught my dog to sit 3-4 feet from the door, stay there while I go out with the "stay" command, and only exit when I say "come". Constant reinforcement of these behaviors daily will not only make for a more well behaved dog but could potentially save their life
Liz & Lou ty I'm working with my Red Healer.. he is so smart, but potty training has been a challenge.. he sleeps with us but does not wet the bed at all.. im going to try the leash being attached to me while I'm cooking. I'm trying to teach him to scrath the door every time we go outside
@@crystalgypsy2581 you can get a bell for them to push with their nose. Luckily for me I am in Australia and can sleep with the back door open atm ( summer ) so my girl can go in and out when she wants but need to work on her bell training ( ebay )
Editing is my biggest struggle lol, I must have lots of coffee and even by the time Im done and I think I did a decent job, I watch it back and im like well that was boring lol. There's defiantly an art to editing.
Mine slept in a crate the first night I had him. Then he slept in my bed. I only woke up one time with a wet leg. And he only had two accidents in the house. But every dog is different
Omg this helps me so much. I’ve had her only 3 days and Luna refuses to potty outside! She has accidents in the house. When I take her outside I take her for at least 20 minutes. I have yet to buy her puppy pads just in case, and she doesn’t have a crate to sleep in at night. But she has done amazing sleeping on her own in her bed at night!
The two best tips are crate training and getting a potty bell. No one told me about crate training and it was really hard to have a puppy. With a crate for sure took off a lot of stress. Some people say it's horrible to crate train but it's not. They love it if you make it a positive space. Also chuckit balls are the best if you have a dog that rips up everything. Also if anyone is planning on getting a new puppy I suggest watching as much Zak Georage videos as you can before deciding. I learned everything great from him.
This might sound kinda gross, but it works: have your dog go potty in the same spot every time and leave a small bit of poop at that spot for your dog to smell. And use praise much more than punishment. I have a blue heeler/pit bull mix, named Ratbait, that I rescued from a very mean man. He is the smartest dog in the whole wide world! Really! He gets very anxious if I even raise my voice, and praising him for being good, rather than scolding him for being bad, is a much, much more effective method of training for him. Love your channel! Completely agree with you on everything you mentioned. Did this exact thing with our heeler and he was fully trained by 3-4 months. He loves his crate he naps all day just like Louie. Makes it so easy to run errands that way. I made the HUGE mistake with my old dog with pee pads because I was terrified she would get sick from not having all her shots again HUGE mistake that I will not ever repeat. Our vet agreed it’s damn if you do damn if you don’t do he supported letting us train him outside. Not to mention socialization is HUGE for heelers. We started taking ours at 8weeks to the farm where our horses live with tons of barn dogs all shapes and sizes as well as humans. Would do it again if I had another puppy.
The best advice I can give anyone who is trying to potty train a dog is have a dog door. Buy one and install one or move somewhere with one. Nudge your puppy from the inside of the house to the outside through the dog door. Then nudge the dog from the outside back in. Then repeat this a few times and the dog will start to realize the difference between inside and outside and you won't have to let them out to go to the bathroom they will sprint right through that dog door so they can go potty. If thats not an option a kennel works great but you can buy a dog door for less then $100 and install it yourself very easily, or you can buy doors with dog doors already installed in them if you or your friends/family aren't capable of installing it on your own. Either way a dog door will make your life easier. We have potty trained multiple dogs this way and they never have accidents in the house once the realize they can come and go as they please via the dog door.
Great tips! First, If you are someone who isn't willing to "work" your dog do not get a Cattle dog. Mine was 10 weeks old when we got him. He has had two accidents in the house and it was because of medication. I don't know how but he has been potty trained since we got him five years ago. We took him outside on a leash every hour and he would do his business. He slept in a very large crate in our bedroom every night until he was one. When he was out of his crate he was being engaged by my husband or myself. We would put him down for a nap around 2pm in his crate for about two hours because he needed it and we wanted to establish the crate as his. He loved it and was a little sad when we put it away for good. He chest bumps us, barks or touches his leash when he needs to go potty. He is such a good boy.
I don't have a Blue heeler I have a rat terrier beagle mix and he was the easiest dog ever to house train I had him house trained in a week's time it took two or three days to train him for a pad and then three or four more days to train him outside and he does have accidents every once in awhile if he hasn't been out for a long time but I've had to work 12-hour shifts and 13 14 hour shifts and he doesn't use the bathroom in the house now of course he's really old now he's 14 but over the time that I've had him he has had very very few accidents in the house...

When mine were 7 weeks or so, just watched for them circling the wagons and I would get them to go outside. and within week or so, they would come to ask to go out( by coming to you and then looking at the door.)

So I just got a puppy, everyone has told me to crate train him but I'm a bit against it because I work long hours and I don't want to have him restrained in a crate for over 10 hours a day. I will get a pen and have him there throughout the day just so he has more space to move. Am I making a mistake?? I'll just have the pen until he's fully potty trained. It's my first puppy ever and any advice will be very much appreciated.
My blue healer is a puppy and I try to take him outside to go potty and he won't pee but as soon as he comes in the house he uses the bathroom. Have any suggestions?
Side bar might be get new puppy in summer as part of plan. That way you aren't out in freeze. Don't give them socks!!! I don't know why but I wouldn't say Amelia my ACD isn't crazy. She always has energy and likes to be outside but as she has gotten to one year old she has lost her nipping and not herding me. We are still fighting intermediate jumping up on us but it has become less and less. I think Lou and the ball is very funny. WE have a Hartz bacon flavored ball that squeaks which has really held up.
Hi Liz &Lou, my dog was a stray, she is about 2 yrs old and was very skiddish when she first arrived. Dottie has been here about 2 months and is beginning to relax however, she has pooped inside 3 times and I always let her out after eating. But I don't always go downstairs with her. I am a senior and sometimes my arthritis doesn't make the stair very easy todo. She exits thru the patio door onto the deck and sometimes she will go down to the yard but most times she doesn't. Will I have to go down a few more times to Re-enforce what should be happening? I like the idea of bells at the door so she can let me know when she has to go because she doesn't bark like most dogs. Quick question, you mentioned you were gone until a certain time everyday, how should I do the training if I'm home everyday? Just stick with the 20 mins go outside? We do plan on walking a lot and trips to the park
We just got a red heeler mix. She is a 1 year old rescue. I tried the crate training and she pooped and peed in it. Should I keep trying it? She was in it for about 4 hours.

my blue heeler cant go outside yet until she has all her shots. She has to pee and poop inside the house for now so thats why we are using pee pads for now. I cannot wait to potty train Freya outside. 🐺
gabo amador that’s not true.... my dog doesn’t have all her shots the vet told me don’t take her outside of her bathroom area which is the yard... to keep her away from other dogs and there poop but in your yard and only your yard with only her poop is safe
We got the dog a crate but he is whining constantly in the crate (it’s in my room) we even put a blanket over it. He is only eight weeks old and he has had about 5 accidents and I would like to get a little more sleep than an hour. He only sleeps when I’m sitting cris cross. We don’t have a boxed in yard or anything just a park beside our house and I don’t want to have to take him out every 30 seconds. Last night I got about 4 hours of sleep and it probably seems like I’m complaining but not when he still pees on my floor. Any tips that could help me?
