Thank you for this video, makes me feel much more relaxed about my 3.5 year old who is stubborn, some days he’s great at it others he’ll just say no thanks. I like the way you say it’s their body and will kinda come to it in their own time but still give the reminders and structure. I’ll keep at it.

I was so patient, no pressure at all, always giving positive messages to my 3 year old child alwyas rewarding the kid etc etc......but its been a month trying unsuccessfully. I'm running out of patience and ideas, YES Im so frustrated at this point. I feel like she is not even uncomfortable with accidents 😮....i hope this video helps me, ill make some changes around

my daughter has down syndrome and she’s 7 going on 8 !! I’ve tried to wait on her but maybe i waited way too long ! but she’s finally ready and i feel like she still makes it hard for me i’ve been doing so for 5 years she was good in the beginning at like 2 but now she just thinks i’m supposed to change her she doesn’t even tell me that she needs to go ! But i’ll most definitely take your advice!!! Stress and potty training isn’t a good mix ! single mother here … i’ve been stressed the whole time and i’m finally trying to do a better job with my temper!

My child is 4, going on 5, and I feel like she understands the potty because she does use it when she doesnt have undies on. But as soon as the panties go on she just treats them like a diaper. I'm a single mom with no washing machine and, I will be honest, the shitty panties trigger me. I can't afford to just throw them out but washing them starts me thinking about what a failure I am and how her dad should be around to help me with this and other negative thoughts. I don't want to let that sour me towards my child's accidents.

I feel you. Mine is also 4. I've tried everyhting in every book, including doing nothing at all. and it's beyond frustrating. My kiddo is smart and knows what they are doing and just refuses.

My child refuses as well a little younger but rather not sit on the toilet and run around and play instead which makes things difficult because he shows no interest in the potty

Yup my 4 year old won’t do it. He gets very bad rashes every 2 weeks. I started right when he turned 2 years old. He was pee potty trained 2 weeks in. But poop he doesn’t want to do it. He just won’t.

My son is also 4 and has no interest in pooping in a potty. Pee is no problem though. But he’s pooped in a potty twice and for some reason won’t do it again. I’m very glad to hear a few others with 4 yr olds struggling cuz I’m like geeze he’s smart, hes ready, understands it but just doesn’t care to.

My child is 6 and still won't 💩 on the potty. Purposely hides to 💩 his pants but goes pee without issues. We've tried everything... He's smart as a whip and thinks it's funny. Won't wipe or clean himself. This is very frustrating

My daughter is 4 and I’m trying to get her potty. I feel like the worst parent rn. I plan on going back to school and in that case she will be in a daycare and she has to this done. I’m just so overwhelmed and stressed about this.

Thank you so much for this video. We started potty training my son, and he got to a 50% success rate. The day care asked if we could put him back in pull ups until he can use the skill of pulling his pants up and taking them down. He is ALL about doing things on his own time, and I definitely recognize that there is a power struggle and I desire for him to be potty trained (wasn't it supposed to happen in 3 days?) is causing power struggles. He doesn't seem to be bothered by sitting in his poop and pee, and so I get a little concerned that he will never want to be potty trained. I'll be changing my approach for sure!

I feel the same way. My son is happy to sit in his pee or poop…doesn’t matter what he wears…pull up or regular underwear he doesn’t say mama I need to go potty he just goes. He has soaked our dining chairs they are ruined and our ottamn. We cannot afford to buy new things so we finally put him back in pull ups. He just wasn’t trying at all to use the potty fights us cries throws fits when we prompt him to go and has no interest in the potty itself. In the beginning of training After he got over the fear of pooping in the potty he was going really well but then reverted back and he basically should just go back in a dare diaper he’s so bad about no holding his pee or poop. I’m literally Losing hair over it and feel like just waiting till he’s 4 because he might be more mature about it. He’s going through the cry baby phase too so it’s been harder. Ugh 😣

My 2 year old showed all the signs of readiness. We started potty training 4 days ago. He did so well the first few days but today was all about accidents and power struggles. I was also stressed about other things going on, so this might have played a part in how our day went.

My son is 4 and will go pee in the toilet but won’t poop. I realized that he does have a weird “don’t look at me” while he poops in his diaper already so I can imagine how weird he feels going in the toilet. It’s just so frustrating though because he is so smart! He can learn anything 🫰 like that BUT can’t manage to poop in the toilet 😩 he does NOT want to be told what to do so I like to make him think he’s making the decision but he still won’t budge! Before bedtime I have him sit on the toilet one last night before training diapers and nothing will come out but once I put that training diaper on he feels comfortable to poop. Ughhh I need help!

Yea my now 5 1/2 year old son (smart) is attending weekly occupational therapy sessions to hopefully help him go poop in toilet instead of his underwear. He’s in kindergarten now. Fall of 2024 is 1st grade. No pressure! (Lord help us)

Thank you for this. I’m trying to potty train my 3 year old daughter but it’s proving difficult. I think she’s ready. I’ve tried and given up several times before so this is 3rd attempt. She refuses to sit on the potty but the last few mornings I’ve put it infront of her dolls house so she can still play and she’s done a poo and wee and been so happy about it. Even though initially having had a tantrum about sitting on it and saying she doesn’t need to. Im trying to make it fun, be patient etc. The rest of the day though she’s just not interested in trying. I’m not even promoting every hour! . I’m trying to play with her to make things fun but any suggestion of the potty like before going out and she has a full on trantrum won’t try and then wets herself. It’s so infuriating! I try to give her choices about where she wants potty etc. I don’t know what to do. Obviously I don’t want to make it worse but it can’t carry on like this! Any advice please?

I wish you could help us. Our daughter is four and has never been successful with potty training. Her daycare is giving up on her. She can’t get into VPK or pre K so now we are behind in enrolling her into the better kindergarten. Kids at school are making fun of her. We are in tears. She just doesn’t seem to care at times. She laughs at it or screams at us. I’ve never felt more useless

Any advice for stubborn older kids who refuse to go? We have a 9 year old in the family who actively withholds her pee and poo and you literally need to fight with her to go to the bathroom. She knows she has to go but doesn’t.

Im at the brink of collapse, add to that, that i am pregnant. Everyone i know has potty trained kids, they most did it in 3 days and mine just will give me a hard time seating in the potty. Then i have the pressure that she needs to be potty trained by october.

@@TheMomPsychologist Thank you so much she is doing so well it's day 6 now and she is pooping and weeing on the potty mostly on own but I'm having some problems with her in the morning she has a hissy fit about being put on the potty for morning wees so not sure what that is about I was thinking maybe she wants to do it independently ? What do you do if your child holds it all day long? He happily sat on the potty once an hour for a few minutes but held it for 8 hours. Refused to drink anything all day, too.

This is actually common. It's commonly due to fear of releasing the pee. Try to run water in the sink/bathtub, blowing bubbles or through a straw will help release the pee, get them laughing, or put their hands or feet in warm water. You can also set a visual timer so that they can see it. The time timer is a great visual timer.

my son will be 4 in may. He is in preschool and they are all over me about potty training. Well he refuses to sit on it, he understands what im sayin when i ask " do you need to go potty?" but when we get to the point of him sitting down he just wont. we use time out for punishment & when he sits i believe he thinks he is in trouble. Im stressed and dont know what to do. Hes teacher basically shamed me for how long it is taking & my parenting skills. Im just lost and frustrated....

Hi Callie! So glad you reached out and I'm sorry to hear about your troubles! Have you read my potty training book? There's so much information in there that I think you'll find helpful. One quick suggestion would be to frame your prompts like "When you go potty, then XYZ." or "It's time to go potty" instead of asking him. Most kids will say "No" if you ask them whether or not they want to go. Definitely refer to my book for more in depth guidance. geni.us/UgjtqbH

I am getting pressured to potty train and my daughter literally turned 2 last week and is not even close to meeting most of the items on your checklist. I don't know why people want to rush things!

If I step back and don’t prompt him he will never choose to go. He will be in pull ups till he is forty. The less I prompt the less he will take initiative to do it himself.

My daughter is almost 4, and she has some developmental delays, so we are just starting to tackle potty training. A few weeks ago, we started trying, and by day 3, she was peeing on the potty all day and having no pee accidents! Then suddenly the next day, she refused to pee at all!! For three more days, she refused to pee on the potty, holding her bladder until she was so full and uncomfortable that she would have an accident on the floor, and that would get her very distressed (despite never being scolded for accidents). I finally gave up after a week because I was worried about her getting a UTI from holding it for so long. I want to try again soon, but I worry what to do if I experience the same resistance. I know she’s capable and ready, since she did so well on her 3rd day, but it was so very frustrating!! 😣

My daughter goes back and forth. Started potty training around 2.5, she just turned 3 still no luck. We successfully went about 3 weeks in panties. Then she refused to say when she had to go or refused to willingly go. She would pick out panties . Now she asks for pull-ups; but then randomly with different people or different situations she will go to potty with no prompting and no fuss

What if they start kindergarten soon. And they have to be ready for school. My 4 year old is about to be 5, and diapers don’t really fit him good anymore. He will use the bathroom at home, but only if I sit him on it. And he will scream and holler and fight me when it comes to using the bathroom. Also he’s afraid of public bathrooms. Like freaks out when I put him on one. So how will he use a school bathroom. I’m having such a hard time with him. And his daddy blames me. And I try so hard.

I’m so sorry I totally get you. I’m in the same situation. My daughter started school and will just hold it until she gets home and is on a pull up, if she doesn’t get one she will hold it for days. And my family likes to put the blame on me even when’ve tried everything. It’s very frustrating! Have you had any progress?

I have a 3 year old and he will hold it until he’s in his diaper for nap time or bed time but refuses and tells me no when on the toilet, I have a little toilet for him and he doesn’t like sitting on the big one. Erg my daughter is 3 years and 3 months. She for sure has anxiety of peeing/pooping in the potty. We decided to be consistent and ditch diapers and do pull ups for naps/nighttime. She went pee in the potty ONCE…she was so proud of herself and went poop after. Then we didn’t see any pee or poop again for 24 hours and we were panicking and about to head to urgent care and then we put a pull up on her and of course-she peed. So now we are realllllly starting over and she’s fully back in pull ups and I’m so sad and frustrated. I don’t even know how to start back up anymore.

Is she potty trained yet? Mine went 3 days without pooping, i threw away all pull ups. So we gave her a suppository and forced her to poop. This shit is so hard! 😢😢

She is! We totally just dropped all potty training talk and stopped worrying about it. She’s going to be 4 next month. She wears undies during the day (her choice) and pull ups to bed (also her choice) we just have been following her lead. But after she held her pee for so long we just went back to pull ups and it didn’t even last that long! Once we stopped worrying about it it was like she wanted to take control of the situation and it worked out!

Yeah do it! Let her do the pull ups. I actually went on a RU-vid channel called gentle potty training. It was literally super gentle and I did that for a big but I think that kind of go back to basics because this skill is SUPER complex for toddlers. So we scaled it back big time. It’s not worth the stress while being pregnant I promise. Your daughter will get there and try not to compare her to others. Some just take longer and the doc told us medically there’s nothing wrong with kids not being potty trained until I think 5/6. Best wishes to you!!!

My son is ready based on the checklist. And he does ask to sit on the potty, granted he sometimes whines as soon as he gets to the potty. He has yet to actually pee on the potty. We are talking weeks of sitting on the potty every morning when he wakes up with a dry diaper, during the day whenever he agrees to try, and every night before bath/bedtime he sits on the potty with no success. Of course the min you put the diaper back on or he gets in the warm tub he pees. I know with boys distraction can be part of the issue and they don't realize they are going but what can I do? He is 3 +1/2.

What are you using to motivate him to go? Stickers? Toys? Treats?

Sometimes treats, like a fruit snack or a juice box. He will actually go to the toilet to urinate, but will not defecate. I've also witnessed him taking the poop out of his underwear and dropping it in the toilet with his hands at least 3 times. I've purchased several packs of underwear due to this. When we travel, I almost always have to put him in a pull-up. We've also tried letting him roam underwear-free and he will actually hold his bowel movements until we put him in underwear again. I also have pep talks with him and it works once then we're back to square one. I'm concerned he will be dismissed from pre-K program because of his resistance. I have subscribed to your channel and really appreciate your work. I'm an LCSW, but it's different when it's your own children or family. Thank you for all you do!

@@TheMomPsychologist We've tried stickers, treats, toys, instant tablet time, literally everything he normally asks for...he will sit for hours on the potty and then you take him off and put a diaper or underwear on he almost instantly goes. and then He doesn't say anything until hes already started.

I used to poor warm water over his privates and my nephew would immediately pee. After some time he did it on his own without the help of water. Also helped if I needed him to pee before bed to avoid an accident.

My son is 3 and he says he is scared of the potty. He doesn't like to be dirty or wet even if it's water on his clothes so the thought of having poop in other place than his diaper makes him freak out.

I had mine trained thoroughly and then he regressed and is having issues peeing in his sleep and poop in his pants at home. I tell him it's time to go and he freaks out on me. It's so frustrating.

My son 4.5 year old pees in toilet but won’t poop. We r trying for 1.5 years and no luck . He covers his face with blanket while doing poop in Diper. We r absolutely frustrated after trying everything.. He is such stubborn that he will hold poop for 1.5 days if we don’t wear him diper . At that point we parents feel pity for his stomach.

My daughter is 2 1/2 and she started potty training 2 days ago, she started pretty good and was exited for the stickers to put on her chart, now, she doesn’t want to sit, she cry’s, and don’t care about stickers oh candies, I don’t know if I should stop for a few weeks and star again or just keep going.. 🥴🥴🥴🥴

I used the reward system. If I say we're not going to the park until you go potty, he immediately goes potty. if I say no you cannot have a cookie, he will go to potty come back and say Mommy I go potty can I have a cookie?. If there is no obvious immediate reward he does not go potty independently he goes in his pants. I make him help me clean up and he thinks it's fun. It's been like this for 6 months. When will he go independently without having prompted.?

This process can take several months to master. I recommend framing it as "When you go potty, then XYZ." Hope that helps! 🤎

I like that this video and your book are gentle with parents. However, this advice never worked for us because my child has underlying neurodivergent traits. Any parent who is struggling should comsider an eval for ADHD among other things at some point. A Dr recently told us the power struggle is an early sign of ADHD. I don't want other parents to also get frustrated using neurotypical tips that likely won't work.

My son just turned 3. We tried in July and he has been successful. Granted it was good for a while then it turned out to be inconsistent. The last 3 weeks he just doesn't seem to care or be motivated. We've made it clear that it goes in the potty. He knows when he needs to go but he will just sit there while pee goes in his underwear or just go without saying anything and we find out later or he will say "potty" but he already pooped in his underwear. We do reward him with M&Ms but lately he just doesnt appear motivated (and no stickers wont work either because this kid is not motivated by those). Not sure what to do. Do you have any tips?

Are you incorporating a clean up routine as well? Praising for dry pants? I would also go back to prompting every 3-60 mins if he's regressing back to more accidents.

@@TheMomPsychologist hes not motivated by rewards. He doesn't care. We do praise him for dry pants. We have him clean up after he pees in his pants. Weve set alarms to when we need to take him and that worked for a bit now hes throwing a fit when he actually does go in the potty and hes intentionally holding it in when I take him at scheduled times. We literally cant yske him anywhere without some sort of accident happening

@@instillari hes doing better now. BMs are still an issue but not that much. Hes going on his own now. Before I just made him go every few hrs (before he starts playing, before we leave, if it looks like he needs to go). Basically get that in his mind to do that

@@bobbychavez6799 happy to hear it’s better! Luckily BM has never been our issue, only the pee. We set a timer but he sometimes refuses to go or will pretend to try on the potty and then pee his pants after. Ugh! Didn’t think it would be so hard

I have twin boys that are 3. One has been potty trained, even through the night since february (before we turned 3). my strong-willed other child is not. I cannot get him to say "i have to potty." or to go into the bathroom on his own... but i know he knows. Because he will only start (like a quarter size spot in his undies) and then he stops. I try to catch him always and rush him to the potty and praise praise praise for finishing on the potty but CANNOT get him to say he has to go or do it on his own... he will tell you about 1 in every 5 times that he has to go... We even stopped trying for a bit and started back up and its the same... HELP!

Try it but they work until they are bored with it. Dont give the toys or reqards until they reach a hard goal. Been doing this for two years and so far still dealing with tantrums.

Ugh. I tried at 18 months, at 2yr birthday and now at about 2.3 i still don't think she's ready. It's not that she's afraid. Shes just impatient. She'll sit and then immediately wants to jump up and play. and I don't know that I am either. It's so frustrating and I'm trying to be so gentle but it's so hard. And now we're in the middle of a move and it's hard to get anything else done.

How did this turn out for you? Assuming she's potty trained now, how long after your move was she successfully trained? We're also in the middle of a move and don't want to push any training for my 2.5 year old until she's settled into the new house.

My kid is 4, and refuses all training. Prizes and praise don't help. Literally nothing works. She won't just sit on the toilet. I bought several fun potty's, no. Nothing. I feel like a failure and people judge me.

Well this was just annoying to watch. This was just like being told "Well, mom, you just suck as a parent, this is all your fault. But teehee, encouragmenet! " I have an actual strong willed child, who knows what to do, how to do it, and chooses not to. I have tried everything you mentioned, I don't prompt hardly at all, he's 4 and he knows what to do. But he will absolutely not poop in the toilet. He will poop only in a pull up. If we don't give him any, he will hold it until overnight when he knows we put on one him. When we didn't , we had a span of 4 days where he wouldn't poop and we almost had to take him to the hospital. i'm over it. I have tried rewards, I have tried bribes, I have tried natural consequences, I have tried literally everything and nothing works. I've made him clean up his own mess, I've made him change himself, he just doesn't care. He can't go to preschool because he's not potty trained and they only take fully potty trained kids. He's smart, he's ready, he's just refusing. When I ask why , his answer is, "Because." "Because why?" "because I feel like it."

Omgosh my son is the exact same way. He's 4 and literally refuses to poop in the pot. I've done literally everything, watched everything, asked advice from everyone, sent him to granny she couldn't do it, asked the doc, talked to his daycare, ipad, reading books, singing songs, treats, letting him bring whatever toy he wants in the bathroom, playing games, have alarms to set a potty schedule, did the sticker thing, have a little potty, big potty, toddler size urinal, our whole family crammed in the bathroom for encouragement a few times, hooked up a tv in the bathroom, close the door because he might want to be by himself, cracked the door because he didn't like it closed, when I see he's about to go I rush him to the bathroom and he'll just hold it even though it's literally about to come out and you can smell it. He was on the toilet for 30 min and held it for two days after that, like how when it was right there. Longest time my son held it was going on 4 days. He'll run to check what I'm doing, what's dad doing, big brother doing making sure we're occupied before he goes. Older brother who's 17 helps out all the time but my 4 year old is beyond strong willed. I don't know what to call it, it's in a category all it's own and it seems like there's no help anywhere when it comes to this.

Same ladies! So glad to find more moms with this issue. My sons 4 and has no interest in pooping on the potty even with rewards. He’s totally capable, no delay issues. He just doesn’t want to 😅🤷🏽‍♀️

My 3 year old likes to take off her diaper and helps me clean up her poop, but won't go on the toilet. I had to bribe her with Black Forest gummy bears now to get her on the toilet. A few months ago she went pee in her portable potty without any real direction. She said she needed to go potty and I showed her where it was and left her alone. She attempted to go poop on it but she had her nightgown on so she got scared that it didn't go in the potty. Ever since it has been a struggle lol
