Might as well have saw cut it if it was still gonna crack and look messy, at least the saw cut would've looked straight

It depends on the slab, but you would use the same rules as saw-cutting.

What if you were to run a deep jointer then close it up with the bull float would it have the same effect?

We use a soff cut blade thickness of .100” which is less than an 1/8” wide. These zip strips have opened up and chipped off on a jagged run with rebar in it. Absolutely waste of a product.

"kind of rusty" - you let your rebar sit right on the bottom. that's wrong

You are correct. The rebar needs to be at about 1/3 the depth of the concrete, measured from the top. For a 6" slab, it should be 2" from the top. The bar resting on the substrate like that is doing nothing to control cracking. Chairs are cheap and the rebar being at the correct depth will make a big difference in reducing cracking.
