EDIT: For all viewers that have no time to watch entire video and didn't have time back in school to do their home work: Liquid nitrogen = Liquid air so it's not toxic and it just boils away when you poor it in to the lake :D So no fish or lake was harmed during the video but I am again surprised how little people know about basic stuff :D Big thanks to Audible for sponsoring today's video! I have been using audible for many years so it's easy to promote them and the Expeditionary Force is probably the best audio book so far that I have listened so if you like scifi I strongly recommend to give it a try!

It would be a question of whether the water would freeze over the opening or whether the pressure of the expanding nitrogen would keep it clear.
@WoodworkerDon

Hmm??? Only way to know for sure is to try it once. 👌
@soylentgreenb
@soylentgreenb 5 лет назад
@@NovaKnightThe nitrogen would keep it clear. If the ice sufficiently resisted the pressure would rise towards ~500 atm. At some point, probably 10-20 atm the container blows up if the ice magically resists. I predict water would get into the flask as it is opened (btw, can't close it completely, must have some kind of one-way-valve to do this; otherwise you might die from metal shrapnel when it explodes; what keeps the nitrogen cold is that some of it boils off continuosly). As the water gets in it boils very violently and blows a big nitrogen bubble under water. This escaping nitrogen keeps more water from getting in. As the stream of gaseous nitrogen dies down, more water gets in and it repeats. What makes pouring water on an oil fire so particularly stupid is that water sinks in oil; so it sits at the bottom and boils. As it boils it mixes further with the oil and boils faster and mixes further and boils faster and creates this fireball of atomized burning oil. If you could release a large volume of liquid nitrogen under water, "deleting" the container instantly as if by some magic (not sure how you'd be able to get close to this in practice; maybe a very large lid on the container and mechanism to yank it away quickly), the nitrogen floats rather well and the escaping gas might keep it somewhat insulated. I bet most of it makes it to the surface and spreads out from there; I don't think it would be as violent as water in hot oil (kindly disregard the fire).
@pflaffik
@pflaffik 3 года назад
@@NovaKnight I believe that a small opening will freeze, theres no room for water to get into the container and the water will freeze on its way in. What happens next is pure speculation, the N still evaporates and eventually builds up a pressure, Lauri just demonstrated how weak ice is at so low temperature so the ice cap may blow off and the process repeats. Only one way to find out.

Take a steel container and seal a second insulated container (or just metal tubing, maybe melt some tin or aluminum to fill in the gap between the tube and the steel wall) around the outsides so you can have LN surrounding an ice extruder. Make a sealed door on the bottom that you can open once the water is frozen and if it works well enough you could manufacture one continuous ice block.

Because you were just pouring the liquid nitrogen into the box, there was probably a bunch of liquid nitrogen that never came in contact with the lake water. If you could find a way to introduce the liquid nitrogen underwater without it immediately freezing and clogging clogging up with ice, you'd probably get much better results.

ok for that experiment you need a control. say a proper Pool of water. like a pool? and inject through the bottom. but even then the problem with Liquid Nitrogen being poured or injected it will form a solid surface, and will continue to freeze on top of that, it will not mix and freeze with the water because of varying temperatures cellular compositions. to freeze the lake maybe a bit more than that, would be a liquid nitrogen bomb submerged in the lake, getter a better result than that.

Liquid nitrogen is fun to play with. You can freeze flowers and then the petals break like glass. I want to see you guys get some dry ice and put it in some coke bottles with a little water and throw them. Put that in slow-mo. They sound like cannons going off.
