Pouring Molten Lead Into An Anvil (and adding 60lbs)

My railroad track bridge style anvil now weighs 115lbs! About 55lbs is from the steel(tracks, tool steel face, base encasement), with the remaining 70lbs coming from lead. I believe that lead can effectively add weight to your anvil without deadening the rebound or breaking the bank. I bought all the lead for this anvil off of Ebay and because I waited for the deals, I got it for less than $1/pound.
This video was shot over a period of about a month, with the shipment of lead being delayed, as well as me just not finding time to shoot.

Good solid work buddy - I got really lucky and got a 450 pound monster anvil in great condition for 70 cents a pound - a few years saving up and searching but a great result at the end - don't give up - somewhere out there is an anvil for you

It’s been 4 years but I’m still hopeful that one day there might be some blacksmithing videos…

I purchased 50 lbs of reclaimed lead shot and poured the bb's into the voids of my anvil stand without melting them first. This way they are easily removed should I ever need to get the lead back out. What I used are very small lead shotgun bb's gathered up from shooting ranges that have been sieved and washed. I had just enough void spaces to use all of the bb's from two 25 lbs bags of lead shot. Not only did it add the extra weight that I was looking for, it also took all of the ringing noise out of the anvil and anvil stand assembly.

Lead shot is a way more practical idea for most folks - and safer too. I saw an anvil years ago where a steel base was made with lipped edges and the anvil was suspended about 1/2 inch above the base while lead was poured to fill the whole space between anvil and stand. He said It really quietened the anvil a lot which was his aim. It was in a built up area and folks had been complaining about the constant ringing. Another method is to place 1/2" thick quarry conveyor belt between anvil and stand. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-82TyALbco-I.html

I would add another piece of steel plate to the very bottom, a wider larger piece, it would add weight plus would balance out the top heaviness. But, that's just me.

Good video but I think you would be much better off adding steel to your anvil then lead. Two reasons, 1. Steel is much cheaper then lead and can be welded to the base or were ever. 2. Lead shrinks when to solidifies will end not firmly attached to the anvil. The loose lead in the cavities would kind of make the anvil preform as a dead blow hammer.

This. The purpose of weight behind an anvil is the transfer of energy. Lead isn't going to transfer energy like steel.

Cool thinking and nice work. But working with lead is not to be taken lightly. When you start heating it up you get down right dangerous to be exposed to the gasses. Same for the off gases of wielding. Everyone thinks of gloves, eye protection, but often forget about fumes and toxicity. A small investment in air filters or breathing units fitting for the type of work your doing is well worth it. This seems to be one of his last video. I really hope he didn't poison his self.

I am thinking that may have happened to him, he had a lot of exposure with little if any protection.

Dumb question....If you or someone else was to ever reheat the anvil would the expanding led cause and explosion? I know freezing water can break steel, but I don't know about expanding lead. I really enjoyed your video. Now a new sub.

I wanted to see you check the rebound of your hammer since you put the lead in the middle of it to see if it changed anything. On your next video add that as bonus footage please.

Hello, Thanks for this vid :) I have two questions about the "lead mod" - What about the sound? Is the anvil still "ringing" like a bell? - What about rhe rebound? Does the lead affect the hammer bouncing ? (Sorry for my poor english, I'm Belgian) Kisses, Axelle.

+Luke Edward Mixter Whats a hek is with your brain --- weld all pieces , drill hole , pour lead (half outside) , weld drilled hole ????7777 May be right sequence is ---- weld all pieces except one , pour lead without using optical hindsight , weld last piece ??? Or even in big hole you can just put lead pieces without melting it --- it also useful to get rig the ring. IMS(trongest)O --- all these dances with lead --- wasting your time & health . P.S. Rebound is a useless bullshit. Compare your design with striking anvil. BTW --- good work. Starting design was fine & nice. Good wishes for you.

Don't make a power hammer until you have spent a number of years getting good at the anvil. It makes it harder to learn new things and it's cheating
