My final two days at the Windy Hill Foundry while Clark was working on the Tally Ho Capstan. This video showed the outcome of the forth pour and making of the last sand mold. This is an in depth video showing everything, In other words NOT a TikToc version! @windyhillfoundry5940 @SampsonBoatCo

This capstan project has been just as compelling as the Tally Ho boat build. I feel like I just finished watching the Lord of the Rings trilogy! Thanks for taking the time to film / explain / share these videos. I'll admit that I know nothing about foundry work and it was hard for me to understand the specifics of all of the challenges involved, but these last few videos were very insightful and it's clear that this project went to the right crew for the job. Congrats to everybody involved!

Steve, don't worry yourself over us in the comment section. It is pretty obvious this is a really difficult pour, and a one time pour at that. Just do what you do, I am loving the whole series. Those who complain about the length apparently don't know how to watch a RU-vid video.

@christopherpardell4418
@christopherpardell4418 2 месяца назад
Sometimes, the know better mob actually has done sumthin and is trying to help. I have set up production tooling for foundry and casting operations. For pulling patterns with such shallow draft angles, you need a rig that can lift the pattern or drop the mold dead straight along the draw direction without the slightest tilt or misalignment. Pulling up from the center of a circular pattern by hand and eye is a trial and error method that reduces the chance of success dramatically. A jury rigged electric hoist that jerks a lot and is not directly overhead is less than ideal. A mold that was not designed to be flipped easily and to be pulled uniformly is also a complication. Ensuring there is not the slightest roughness or undercut on the draft surfaces is also critical. The pattern could have been made with a half degree more draft and that would have helped a lot. But for this foundry, I would recommend some scissor lifts and leveled benches that can be used to better control how molds and patterns are drawn with smoother and more linear action. It would make future projects a lot less frustrating.

@@10swatkins When a sailing vessel "Powers up" as it sets to the wind all the rigging (sheets/Ropes and lines) and sails tighten up it's an amazing feeling as they kind of jump out out of the water. At the same moment your adrenalin output will jump 4 fold. I have flown the Spinnaker. You put on a harness called a "trapeze" and then when the sail is full you get attached to the trailing sheet and you are able to fly like a bird for as long as you want. In Tally Ho's case you would be 40 or 50 feet above the water. You will never have any Circus ride give you any fun like that my friend. Thanks a bunch Steve, Stop by and have a look at my silver casting and pouring. I try and keep the channel clean and friendly and help anyone that asks for it. Any project will always attract a critical audience. Reminds me of a mob of cockatoos that used to watch the outdoor picture theatre in Onslow Western Australia. These birds would sit in the gum trees behind the seating and give a running commentary on the action on the screen and during some gun action the noise would make it impossible to hear the dialogue. Almost as entertaining as the movie itself. This effect is just a fact of life. Great video.

Great result, and great video as well. Don’t let people tell you not to talk to much. It is how others learn. I did some small brass and bronze pouring, but looking at this size, the temperatures involved to melt the metal? Luckily I only ever had one accident, and the damage was survivable. But people have no idea about how impossibly much energy is stored in molten metal. So kudos to Windy Hill Foundry and you as well. And hope Leo appreciates it as well.

You have shown a very raw video of the making of the capstan. The reason it looks so much better or easier in other channels is because they only show the part were everything went perfect. A friend who is a vidiographer, invited me to downtown Nashville where he was filming a new addition of an old historic building. A big company with a bunch of professionals. Plumbers, electricians, carpentry, masonry. A carpenter didn't measure correctly, or used the wrong cut. An electrician blew a fuse, they to recalculating water preasure because they couldn't get it right. Everybody made some mistake at some point and had to start over again. Not to mention how much time was wasted with peole walking around waiting for something to get done. Very frustrating watching workers walking around waiting or on breaks. I think more time was spent on editing than filming. The vidoe looks like if everybody was precise, efficient and finish in a fraction of the time. If you would have just done 3 videos. Part 1. Initial pour; Part 2. Tweaking mistakes; Part 3. Getting it right.😉. Comments? Darn, you guys are just impressive! Masters of the craft! Who needs a big company when there are people like you! Avoid all those who don't know that even big industries don't always get it right the first time, and there's always people walking around on their phone waiting for something else to be done.😂

I have none of this guy's skills or experience, but I recently tried making a two part mould so that I could make a forged carbon fibre part and it is a nightmare even for a small part. Making parts by using a pattern to make a mould and then casting the part from that mould seems to me to be a process that has it's own failure built in at every step, and you are lucky when it works, I admire the tenacity to keep going in the face of adversity. (sorry if the spelling of mould and fibre is upsetting - I'm in the UK 😁)

When I used to build balsa wood models (about 45 years ago) I would paint them with something called Dope. I would put coat after coat on, sanding between them. In the end I wound up with a glass smooth surface that I could then paint. (my P38 was a thing to behold) I know you are done and it does not matter at all now, but could you have used dope or epoxy coating to make a smooth surface? Clark dancing a jig on the sand, with you and Keith Rucker as back up dancers. - now that would be TikTok worthy.

The pattern came varnished and sealed. Clark applied a slurry of graphite and alcohol to the pattern to make it even slicker. The problem was it needed more sanding to get rid of any roughness from the pattern work... Even a saw mark is a locking point for the sand to mold to.. I have tried for two years to get Clark to go barefoot! I know once he tries it he won't go back :)

Thanks for explaning the unseen Details .. like many other Jobs .. some Things take longer even if it look easy .. it is not ! Sure Experience helps but it's not always the main Way .. sometimes you need an "creativ Detour" to fix it

Great work, a real tribute to the old-time craftsmanship! Truly amazing what they were able all this time ago. Are you going to make a spare one? Since you now seem to have the process locked in?
@10swatkins

Keith has the last two now. The 3rd to practice setup with and the last one for the finished product. If we had to Clark can easily pour a replacement now that all the kinks are worked out of the process and pattern..

Nice job! Glad you kept after it! One question as hard as it was to pull the pattern off the bottom could you have made the bottom out of the CO2 core material? I'm sure complicated.
@10swatkins
@10swatkins 2 месяца назад
The cores surfaces made that way are much more course grained. The sand Clark makes is more fine textured and gives a better finish l.

When I was a kid there was no RU-vid. There were plenty of WW1 vets and WW2 Vets and Vietnam was on. Stories were told and You could spot a Phony a mile away! Us Kids Knew Marines are Stationed at Camps and Army is stationed at Forts and We knew all the names of the Navy ships, because most of our Parents were Vets, that grew up in the great depression. kids these days think they are experts in everything but have no hands on experience with anything. When My Sergeant asked Me If I could drive A jeep I said yes and I figured it out in less than 30 seconds although my only experience was riding a motorcycle. My Parents could do anything, kids these days want something for nothing sometimes.

Young people today have no idea the true value of RU-vid, I struggle to get 4,000 views on a video while a kid playing with different toys made 10 million a year off of the millions of views! Like you I had old craftsmen to learn from and books... Hell in the 7th grade I finished the school year with 8 library cards filled in and stapled together... ( STILL can't speell worth a damn!)

Great result! Just a curiosity, is there any reason you couldn't use the co2 activated silicon sand for the main mold itself?
@10swatkins
@10swatkins 2 месяца назад
Oh I think you could, but what do I know... That's a question for clark. I would be really concerned that the gas would not reach everywhere in the 8" thick sand around the outside of the core pattern or inside the interior of the part... If you watch the SV Seeker chanel you can find videos where that was used to make all kinds of things such as the port hole covers and even the propeller blades. I think Doug used it because instead of black sand because it was easy for him and he did not have a supply of the good sand. The sand Clark makes works fine, he uses it everyday and gives a good finish so it was appropriate.

Yes, Watch Keith Rucker's channel.. He has the two casting shown at the end of the video and is doing the machining there. He is also retrofitting the capstan to be electric...
