He has the audacity to call people lazy, even if they dont provide good infrastructure, health care and internet access. I was raised from poverty. Its not because of laziness. Moreover, the education quality in Indonesia it's lame. Meanwhile in java island people had 9 score education, in Sumatra we only got 4 score. Lack of infrastructure, there's no internet. People don't know about tech tings and everything that could improve their knowledge and prosperity. People can't get out of poverty without proper education and right information. And also good infrastructure including internet, road, health care
9:20 at first, he said that his people are progressive. then he claimed that they are lazy. and then, he said that he doesnt even know why they're that lazy. and then he passed the responsibility of governmental work back to the people. if only you guys see how many face palm i did and how many animal names i swear after seeing this
my dad once went to Aceh for work for a month. It was stressful, because Aceh ppls were famous for laziness (they wont go office before 10am), stubborn, close-minded (due to religion believes they hold tight), and local government has zero effort. they event refuse change, and my dad work was in vain.
Says a man that is sitting in an office that probably isn't elected. It's disgusting calling his own people lazy, when Clearly the odds are stacked against them. I am lucky enough to be born in a medium income family, in a medium sized city. But luckily the poor here can live comfortably and has the means to get out of poverty, and it really is about being lazy or not.
My heart aches for these people. Indonesian people are some of the most sincere, kind, and generous people I have ever met. I am furious by the illegal logging, and the traitorousness of that government official calling his impoverished people lazy,
Illegal? You think people go burn the rain forest down, cut all the trees and turn the place in a plantation illegally..??? Use common sense. Not DUHHHH!
Indonesia is disgustingly corrupt. You should check out the Act of Killing, it is about the genocidal military coup of Indonesia which took place in the 1960s with the backing of the western powers. It killed at least 2 million people, and is the origin of Indonesia's corruption.
Bapak-bapak : "Menurut saya malas" Rara : "kenapa pak?"
Indonesia population grew from 87 million in 1960 to 270 million in 2020. That's almost 200 million people that need accomodation, room to make business, and farms to feed them.
@@michelledelfiana9105 this!!! There's so much the people could do. Especially in a nation that is conveniently (for those in power) centralized. I have heard so many stories from people, where the government takes their lands away, or forcefully get them to sell their lands at low prices... so low that their produce pays more then the actual cost of land. It's disappointing really. If only the government would appreciate using locals as workers and train them to work, but I guess the government is to lazy even for that.
Without deforestation, there is just not sufficient land to plant palm tree. Then poverty will continue follow by extreme poverty for many Malaysian and Indonesian.😥😥
WOW!!! he blatantly blamed the people why there is no progress in their community??? No farmer is lazy they are just being unfairly exploited by corporate giants that is why they become poorer and poorer.
Sy kagak ngarti kenapa kebanyakan pejabat klo di tanya masalah di daerahnya kebanyakan nyalahin masyarakat nya. Kagak sadar apa klo ekor ngikutin kepala.
Okay, I am not from Indonesia so I don't how their politics work. Was this guy elected by his constituents or was he an appointed government official? He just straight out called his people lazy in front of the cameras. I wonder if that will sit well with his constituents.
This is not about poor people being lazy but the reality is the rampant corruptions and as we know these big companies where able to do their bad deeds because of the political officials who accepts payment from this companies. No one to blame and should take responsibility are these government corrupt officials.
Thank you for bringing this to the table AGAIN! It provided me lots of resources, data and aspects that I can have a deeper look while writing thesis about it!!!
It's not about the 5-hectare cultivation but rather how you utilize the available land for maximizing one's income. Good agricultural planning is equally important to eradicate poverty. Agri-Cultivation, Animal Husbandry, Fishery, cottage industry, etc, thrive side-by-side to excel being a farmer.
Massive deforestation was never an economic necessity. None of this ever needed to happen. The govt of Indonesia needs to get out of the business of liquidating forests. Forest liquidation and forest conversion are the Indonesian national economic policies that created this ecological horror. The end of Indonesia's forests will happen in our lifetimes if the Indonesian govt doesn't reverse it's policies. We've heard it all before. Reforms are coming. Yet they never do and that's because the Indonesian govt has not changed it's economic development practices, namely liquidating forests and converting them.into expanses of pulp and palm oil plantations
Deforestation and poverty are definitely big problems in all of Aceh, but it is curious and unfortunate why VICE singles out Aceh Tamiang government, and fails to mention that pemerintah Aceh Tamiang has already take many historic steps to help solve these issues? Misalnya: - Moratorium on new palm development and review of all existing licenses (2018) - Formation of Green Growth Acceleration (Tim Percepatan Pengangunan Hijau) in partnership with local NGOs - Dll. A simple Google will pull up many concrete examples dan statistik resmi (termasuk dari lembaga penelitian dan ilmiah) that show the success of these efforts on slowing deforestation and improving VICE hanya meluangkan waktu 3 detik untuk mengatakan “meskipun deforestasi sudah menurun” tetapi gagal mengakui Aceh Tamiang adalah salah satu Kabupaten di mana penurunan PALING drastis karena kepemimpinan dan kolaborasi antara Pemerintah, LSM, dan sektor swasta. I like VICE news, but imbalanced and incomplete reporting like this can cause more harm than help.
Janji2 doang halah"
@@mantabsekali920 makasih atas jawabannya bang.
Stop pointing finger towards someone else. If only we can see that all the sources of problems lies within ourselves. Instead of pointing finger towards someone else we must take a good look within ourselves first. Consciousness and awareness are the main things that today's people are lacking.
They aren't lazy. They just don't get the lot of access, well education, and investment to expand their resources. We don't need to work hard. We just need to work smart and innovative.
I don't understand why blame oil palm for deforestation. Does opening up durian, rambutan, jengkol, mustard and chili plantations not cause deforestation? the flood is only caused by deforestation? what about climate change, garbage, location, land subsidence etc. why not discuss about corruption? logging in conservation areas is caused because there are people who support it secretly. also why is palm oil cheap? because palm oil has a higher productivity per hectare than canola, coconut, corn, cottonseed, olive, peanut, safflower, soybean, and sunflower. what a wonderful propagan... i mean insight
The answer is pretty simple. For smallholders with land less than 5 hectare, it is more profitable to grow other crops than palm oil. Growing palm oil needs a lot of investment and other forms of capital and it was not easy for these people with limited resources. Zulkifli said it himself, he only earns 300 thousand rupiah per month from palm oil cultivation, they cannot compete with the efficiency of large companies with thousands of hectares. Growing other crops meanwhile, needs only small portion of land and less effort, thus less costs. However, many of these small holders have minimum technical know how on growing other crops as they lived most of their lives knowing only how to grow palm oil (checkout the indonesian cultures of “latah” in the palm oil industry expansion during the 70s-90s). At the same time, the productivity of palm oil for most of these farmers are also declining because most of the palm oil trees that they owned are now in average older than 20 years old which is beyond their productive phase. Because of this they have to replant, however replanting also causing problem, the farmers have to wait for 4 years or so before they could finally harvest the palm oil. What are they going to do during this 4 years? They are poor, not very well educated, and have been relying on palm oil for most of their lives. The most logical thing to do is opening up a new land to cultivate more palm oil by cutting down trees or burning the forests. Growing up other crops indeed going to help the farmers. With less land needed and more profitable outcome for the farmer, cultivation of other crops could help reducing deforestation and better the socio economic condition of the people. But these people need help, education, infrastructure, technological know how and etc which is something that can be provided by the gov or ngo or even other palm oil companies if they ever care about the environment or these people. This video does not necessarily talk about corruption but it tells us about the structural discrimination by the gov towards these farmer. Tengku's responses correspond with the "lazy native" myth theory by Husein Alatas about the southeast asian society. Back then, the dutch colonizer used this concept to strengthen colonial ideology and capitalism in the mind of the natives. This colonial ideology survived into the post colonial world of modern Indonesia. Governments tend to think that the natives are lazy and therefore legitimize to neglect most rural area people with their needs and focus the state budget on something else that they think to be much more productive instead. The importance of this bit of interview I think is to show how Indonesian hasn't really moved on from many colonial ideologies even after more than 70 years of independence, and how these concepts are still embedded in the structure of the society and have real impact on how the society views themself and therefore how they function. Deforestation does cause the flooding, you can read it yourself on the internet, there are literally tons of academic journals and articles about it, just read. You said it yourself that palm oil is cheap because of the high productivity but at what cost? Again these small farmers cannot compete with that. At first, yes they can compete, but now with the expansion of large companies they no longer have a chance. I agree Palm oil is not to blame, but human greed and ignorance, such as by saying any video related to palm oil as a propaganda piece without giving any relevance, context or supporting argument is to blame.
Yap setuju. Jawaban kalian 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Remember guys right now the indonesia gov is battling with EU at WTO about this and about the nickel export. Pas banget ya video nya, hhhmmm fishy, isn't it? Semoga bapak2 petani ini keadaannya tambah baik.
A politician completely out of touch with the people they are supposed to represent and support? I for one am shocked! Who would have seen this coming?
Cashier owning land - NIL , Farmer - 5 Hectare. Something is very wrong if he can only Panen 1/month. and getting that amount. Need to look at how he maintain his farm?. Of course Goverment help/responsibility to infrastructure is paramount.
Blame to Chinese-Indonesian own palm oil company who get high demand of worldwide palm oil, US Europe Are High Consumer palm product like soap and beauty appliance
Palm oil stores solar energy in its wood(Infact the heat of the wood that ignites comes from solar energy... Also CO2), and is an high growth wood crop!! in about 20 years a palm grows up to 12 meters!!..honestly, I think it's comparable to a local forest in terms of wood growth(the measure of stored CO2 and solar energy)... Obviously the wood of the cut plantations must not be burned ... but it must be used to make wood objects that last over time. If it stores solar energy it means it takes away solar energy from the environment and so it breaks global warming. Surely better than non-tree oil crops... Human beings, see better where's global warming.
It's sad and disgusting how "From the people" turn into power hungry politicians after they are elected "By the people" but then are no longer "For the people". I thought according to our ideology, we share an identity as fellow Indonesians so we are able to take care of eachother. But individualism takes place. In my opinion, Further decentralization of the government should take place, but with better oversight. When you say something as leaders, please act on it, and actually see it through and keep maintaining your words... Why not hire rangers from locals... pay them to take care of the forests? I know it's hard to prioritize the people, the economy or the environment, especially in a nation that is so in need of economic stability, yet the people's lives are so intertwined with the environment.
There are still plenty of good quality forest in Sumatera. Must we keep our forest to help climate control when in faraway land there are not much forest left and residents and industries continue to burn more fossil fuel that to "HELP" warm the planet they are campaigning about. These folks in Sumetera need to feed themselves. Is that sinful ? Large plantation means work for them to make a living.
Let's say from this region the palm oil industry disappeared. Will that help the situation of the people? Destiny is made by God and your will not by an unfair circumstance. The owners of companies who made billions must be really bad to establish an industry that supports everyone in the region either actively or passively or both. To be fair the doc. Should show who was helped by this industry.
It's a catch 2-2 ... While i do acknowledged there was an inherent problem of lack an inovation comes from the farmers ( lazy ) it also exarcebated by govts official who are too lazy to bring the solution for the farmers ....so it was a devil circle of nothing done and nothing moves on .. nobody was an innocent here ...
