These folks telling you to cut links out don't know what they are talking about. The chain is stretched which changes the pitch of the chain. This is what wears out your sprockets. It's like running a #60 chain on a #50 sprocket. The sprocket tooth will catch the chain bushing in the center and wear the sprocket teeth out. The more it wears the faster it wears.

Replace the chain !! IF your tensioner is all the way in your at the end of the chains life.... you should have 50% of thread left on the adjustment thread/bolt.

Chain wore out and stretched. Replace. Pulling links is a quick fix and not a permanent fix for a wore out and stretched chain. Geometry will be wrong and you will wear sprockets.

Wow Josh, Everyone wants you to spend all kinds of money ! Get a new master link, cut some links out, which can be easily done in the field with a cordless grinder, adjust the tension and finish the baling like you intended to. When your all done and it's over then make the major repairs !

Josh, isn't 20 bucks a bail better than 0? Letting it rot in the field seems counter to your goals. I understand you plan to have cattle eventually and bailing won't be such an issue. Just a dumb question I know just thought I'd ask. Keep up the good work and the great videos!

Hey Josh, I commented on a video of yours before about your flooding issue. You mentioned while talking about your future home having to put in massive pipes. Look into a heavy timber bridge. We had the same issue on the base I'm stationed at in TN with flood waters knocking out three side by side 24" pipes. We replaced these with a wider, deeper span and a heavy timber bridge. It solved the whole problem. The water was no longer restricted, and the bridge is capable of holding the weight of a mobile Howitzer (Paladin Gun). I'm telling you, that would save you time, money, and headaches. I need to get footage of it for you the next time we get heavy rains. The culverts that still exist are still backing up, but the way we built the bridge, it's almost like the abutments shoot the water under the bridge. No more problems. BTW, love the videos, keep up the good work, and if you need any advice on that bridge, I'm here to help. Matt, TN Seabee

Noticed my chain kinda loose.had baler 24 years.gess it deserves a new chain before that happens to mine. Hint.carry a fire extingusher on baler.had a roll bering go and set bale on fire.ejected bale saved baler but set windrow on fire. Didnt have fire extingsher but did stomp out. Barley.i was lucky

@stoney ridge farmer if the surplus hay is worth $20.00 a bale and yer not going to use em anyway. Why not sell em instead of wasting em? In a way yer throwin money away are you not? I understand it costs more to bale then $20.00 a bale but even if yall only recoup half yer cost, yer still bailing it anyways. Maybe there’s more logic I’m missing, cause the way I see it money is money. May not be the amount yall calculated per bale to make money selling it but if y’all let it rot instead of using or selling yer throwing money away!! Just my two cents keep up the good work!! Ps I grew up on a farm and spent every summer bailing hay and selling hay. Some years we took a loss but making $30,000 instead of $45000 was always better then throwing $45,000 away cause at the end of the year emery lil bit counts who knows maybe you could recoup yer fuel costs!!

We do the same with our hay fields currently as we don't have any livestock to feed and the hay price is super cheap so unless another farmer needs it we just cut our fields to add the mulch back to the ground and keep the pressure on the weeds.....looks good Josh!

The chain in your bailer is like the coil tune drive train in our GE transmitters.When the chain goes slack in these-jackscrews break along with the chain.And all of this is in a hard to reach area-and to add to the fun the tune capacitor drive chains are next to the coil tub drive chains.Tx is over 50 yrs old!!!The fun of short wave broadcast!

As far as your hearing you need to protect it. I was just fitted with hearing aids after many years of not doing so. $ 5000.00 worth to be exact so protect what you have left. Silly city folk question. Why dedicate so much land to hay field if it’s more than you can use or sell? Why not grow other crops there? Also, you are already bailing the hay, so it’s costing you money weather you sell it or not. Why not get a little money for it if you can? $20>0...

That's not a wasted bale, you can unroll it and bale it again. That's what I do. That's one reason I leave the loader on my tractor while baling. You can use you loader to help you unroll the bale of hay. On hills if a bale rolls into your way you can move it quickly and just keep on baling.

Popping a link out is just a day fix, need to replace the whole chain before next baling job. As others have said, if you don't replace the chain your shortened chain will cause bad wear on the sprocket and cost more money long term. Not sure if the tensioner spring needs to be replaced or not though.

I don't want to sound like a troll but the (hay) after getting and or staying wet for this long would best be described as bedding. You can't just leave it lay so bale it and hope it has a few leaves left for some nutritional value. Good luck

Not sure why you want to bale hay if your not going to sell it. Wear and tear = money. Bush hog that hay into the ground. Save time and money. That hay is practically no good for feed. Cut your losses.
@ohhpaul7364
@ohhpaul7364 6 лет назад
Like the other people have said, the bolt on the chain tensioner is all the way in, either the spring has gone bad or you need a new chain. Easy way to check the spring is to take the chain off and see how far you can move the tensioner sprocket towards the spring, if there is a bunch of slack left after the spring is fully relaxed, then the spring is probably needing replaced. You can probably tell if the chain is stretched once you get the master link to the store and it will not match the chains at the store, pins are farther apart; perhaps easier if you take the entire chain.

It isn't the cost of the bale, it's the cost of transport. Transport costs about $3-5 a loaded mile so to go 1,000 miles to Wyoming would cost $3,000 plus the price of the hay as well.

I would suggest getting a Tedder v rakes don't flip hay over the best since they drag hay together you still have alot of moisture in the hay. A old example NH 256 would be best thing to use besides a Tedder. Good video I'd bale every bale I could I try to keep few years worth of hay in case of drought

The hay will be molded it is no good a loss. It will kill the animals especially horses. Are you going to build a 30,000 dollar bridge to get to your home? Maybe some giant culverts and dirt would be cheaper. Maybe the bail is too heavy from moisture is why the sheer pin is breaking? Oh dah maybe its the chain LOL. I see. get use to hay equipment breaking that is the way it is.

From my experience of 72 years; maintenance is more than greasing and cleaning. Its replacing chains sprockets bearings at intervals. I know this might seem crazy ; don't fix unless broken but when you look at the long run its cheaper. What if you had rain on your heals and you had to get it bailed and stored. This could of cost you allot. Just saying. Love the videos.

Josh, Yes he’s right, the chain may be stretched a bit, but the sprockets are set at a certain pitch putting a warn out chain on will wear your sprockets out faster. I was a gear cutter for years and i have made many sprockets. If the chain has the right number of links and your tensioner is at it’s limit, your chain is in need of replacement. Sorry, i know it’s one more thing.
