Recently I purchased a D16Z6 valve cover that was professionally powder coated to install in my 2000 Honda Civic EX Coupe and it begged the question... Is expensive powder coating really worth the extra money? Should you just go to AutoZone and spend $17 on a can of wrinkle black spray paint and do it yourself instead? Today we're going to be putting both methods head to head and finding out which is truly better!

I bought an oven, generator to run it, and a powder coating machine so I can do valve covers & calipers. This is a great comparison between the two. I'm curious as to how long the can stuff will last.

How long does a good powder coat like this last? I’m pretty sure my last cover was the can stuff after seeing the comparison and it’s just started peeling after 4 years

Generally speaking, the powdercoat should last longer. Honestly though, if a can job can last up to 4 years it would take over 20 years to spend more on a can than you would on a powdercoat job. So it's just personal preference at that point.

Painted the jugs of my BMW and Moto Guzzi motorcycles over 30 years ago. Still looks great even after using GUNK to degrease the engine every other year or so. I stuck the jugs in the oven at about 200 degrees before the first coat. They must have changed the formula because the newer one looks much smoother. Mine has kind of a hairy look instead of a bumpy look.

Good video I really do wish you covered up the Honda with tape for before you paint the logo

It’s much easier to sand off the paint from the Honda logo than it is to tape that off. It would be super hard to tape that and make it look clean.
