Huge thanks to Uppish for pointing out that I left out #2 of the JAF perks, hahaha! You're the best, thanks so much! Here's the the re-upload, thank you all for being so patient! ^_^
Here's a video idea.... Can you get FCNY to sponsor a giveaway of a flute? It doesn't even have to be fancy... maybe even a cleaning cloth that you can sign in sharpie!!
JustAnotherFlutist Are there any flutes where instead of split E, the G# key opens the tone hole that the split E would normally close? Yes, I know the fingerings of some of the notes will change, like the low A up to the C# will be the normal fingering except with the G# key too, but we already hold the D# pinky key above the D#, so I don’t see why we can’t hold the G# key above the G#.
I love your descriptions of the "egg". I've never heard it put that way...Your descriptions are excellent and its a mini private lesson, which after many years of playing making some changes....
Just purchased the Powell Conservatory Aurumite with a 10k Gold Lumina head joint and it's fantastic - took me a while to decide and this combination is what I fell in love with! Thanks for the input and the code! It's been quite the journey! So many flutes so much to choose from!
Quinn No. That would be cool! Last summer, William Bennett had me try the Arista wooden flute with silver mechanism and it was completely different from the sound that I get on my flute
I have a ruby aurumite with a 14k gold Venti cut headjoints i also have a Burkart professional silver and a murumatsh platinum clad I love them so much!
I love the way that the Powell logo spells out VQP,which stands for Vincint Qui Patir, which is Latin. Which is translated to "He who conquers endures" in english. Yes I know that it stands for something else but I found a new use for it okay
When I went shopping for my flute I tried these flutes. But they didn’t do it for me. I found the sound to be just loud and the flute unwilling to work with me. I ended up buying a Millenium flute by Brannen Brothers. And I paired it to a Nagaha silver headjoint. For me it gives a beautiful sheet yet shimmering sound 😀
eye yam sew glad I bought the tenor recorder, instead of the hundred dollar flute! Ewe hall have weigh more work producing sound than i'd ever have assumed! I certainly respect you musicians. You are different from non-artists'. I've known a few and realize i'll never be one. But music can be fun even for us. Absolutely brilliant description of breath/tongue/mouth/etc., so very detailed i'm sure you fluteists' totally get this. Great video, youtube is lucky you're aboard.
We flutists have our own language, how peculiar. Superb descriptions of uncanny subtleties that only flutists appreciate fully. From physics, I know that lower mass = faster tracking. Are the heavier pinless mechanisms any slower to move? You are so young, but you have obviously been very well trained. My congratulations to you.
When I first bought it, I got a Philharmonic with wings! But after a couple months I started wondering if a different headjoint would work better for me. I didn't have as much flexibility on the Philharmonic (loved the volume though!) and tapers are a lot easier on the Venti :) everyone else I know who has a Powell has a Philharmonic!
After trying a million different flutes and headjoints I fell in love with a 10k brannen and a 9k powell, but they are wayyy out of my budget. I had decided to try the burkart 9k/ag and the haynes q-fusion flutes, and to me they both felt like heavy-wall silver flutes :( I had decided to try this flute and I was blown away! I fell in love with the sound and the projection, and I honestly loved it more than the 9k/10k flutes! Now I am just waiting to hear from my college professor who I'll be studying with in the Fall!
I have a Powell Aurumite flute, and it is the best flute for me. I followed JAF advice to try as many flutes as possible and after two years of searching and saving I was able to buy my Powell. The Aurumite flutes are heavier than the silver flutes but for some reason the pinless flutes feel that much more heavy.
Great review as always! I watch your videos all the way from Brazil, they're awsome! I'm currently looking for an intermediary flute, not quite at the conservatory level yet... but I just love to watch the reviews, all of them. Best wishes to you :)
I would like to see the two Powell aurumite flutes compared in one video - the ruby aurumite with gold on the outside and the 14k aurumite with gold on the inside.
Thanks for posting. Do you remember if that Powell urumite you were playing was a heavy wall or was it the 0,16? Because I want to buy one and it scares me the weight.
Julia Gottheil, the Aurumite only comes in 0.16 standard wall. At least that’s what I was told. Anyway, I loved it so much that I bought the Conservatory Aurumite. Hope you like it! The weight difference from the silver one was not noticeable. I think what mostly adds weight to these flutes is their pinless mechanism. If you tried this flute, which headjoint did you like?
Can you please do the powell 14k arumite flute with silver on outside and 14k gold on inside please - and I really love the depth of your reviews thank you so much
I've been dying to try the Lumina head joint! I've never tried a headjoint with wings before but I've always wanted to. I did try the Powell Conservatory with the Philharmonic headjoint and I tried the Powell signature ( I don't remember which headjoint I tried) but for me I preferred the Philharmonic headjoint with the Powell Conservatory. My dream piccolo is the Powell signature piccolo( one of my teachers from my undergrad has a Powell piccolo and my last teacher she played on a Keefe piccolo) 😃🎼🎶❤️🎹
+Kiara Eijo That's super awesome!! All of these headjoints were FANTASTIC and had wonderfully unique personalities! It was so fun getting to know them 😊
I was wondering if you made a video about How to set your embouchure? If you haven't, I would love to see one. Thanks and btw I love your videos and flute 💞😍
Sorry if this seems silly, but I just want to make sure! So if I take flutes out on trial with the JAF code, I don't have to pay for the $70 shipping "for the first two flutes," as it states on the FCNY website? Thanks so much for these videos, definitely beneficial as I'm looking to upgrade! You should try and review the Muramatsu DS! I tried it once, and I have a feeling I'm going to take it out on trial again.. :)
I like watching these reviews and I don't even play flute. It's interesting to see you how you think instrumentally and apply it to yourself and music (it's hard to explain but hopefully you get what I mean).
the conservatory aurumite is my dream flute! I own a sonare ps601 and its a great intermediate flute but I'm making myself get the aurumite when no go off to music school.lmao so in the market for a piccolo for both indoor and outdoor preformances,do you have any sugesstiound? thanks in advance, I love watching your videos Joanna!
+angelica bohurjak Definitely rent or find a piccolo with resin (plastic) for outdoor performances, but you can try anything for indoor! If I were you, I'd choose similar spec piccolos from different brands, and when you find one that works naturally for you, narrow it down to the headjoint that will work the best for you 😊
I absolutely love watching this kind of videos! when I bought my flute in December you helped me so much for my decision, so I just wanted to say a big THANK YOU! I bought a pearl elegante 795 with c footjoint and silver head joint and body and it's absolutely perfect for me. my question is: could you please explain in a video what changes between soldered and drawn holes, because I've never understood that. byee
Hi. As far as I understand, the holes are “punched into the tube. The drawn holes are lifted from the tube holes the soldered are added to the flute after the holes are punched. These soldered holes are stronger and more stable....so extra metal is added to a soldered, and the metal is stretched out of the punched holes in the drawn holes version. Hope that helps, although maybe my explanation isn’t great. To recap, soldered key holes are added.......so more metal which gives stronger flute and drawn ones are taken from the edges of the already punched holes....therefore same weight of metal as before the metal is drawn out into chimney pots
Hi, kindly tell me what Yahmaha B foot will slip on to the Yahmaha 225 S. Likewise, the next best Headjoint. Rather than laying $2,000. for a new Flute, i thought to beef up the Flute I have. I think the upgrade may prove more density overall. Thanks for your time.
your a fantastic we flautist and all those flute are lovely why don't you give the Alto flutes a Review to whenever you get the time plus the Nagahara James Galway / standard / full concert models love looking and listening to your reviews.
Hi Joanna! Today I played at a concert! I made some mistakes because in front of an audience I get a little bit nervous. Could you give me some advise on how to be more relaxed at concerts? Thank you! Ps: I love all of your videos
+Nicole Radley A lot of desensitization needs to happen, just keep performing! I'll make another video about nerves sometime, but keep in mind that everyone is a bit different in his the deal with anxiety and stress. Observe your own quirks and find ways to counteract what you do when you get nervous! 😊
I tried both flutes during my last flute shopping experience. I couldn’t notice a difference at all between both pinless/brögger systems tbh. I would say that maybe the Miyazawa was just slightly heavier to hold. I went with the Powell because I preferred their headjoints and preferred the feel of the mechanism. But did also love the Miyazawas. I got the Venti cut on my Powell.
I love the way you explain things and I really can understand you easily :) ... I even applied for your "curious.com" courses and loving it like craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazy.... By the way I call you the "Abracadabra" teacher :-P I was wandering if you can do a review of these flute models pls: *The Di Zhao Flute Model 300 *Gemeinhardt Student Flute Model 3 *Pearl Quantz Series Flute Model 505 OR 525 I do have the 2SP for now and was looking to get one of these hopefully one day, I cant try them as i don't live in the US or in a country that do have a big music stores. So I really need your help here. Thanks for everything and hope that happiness always surround you as you are making others happy :)
I tried both. Both are great! I chose based on headjoint cuts that worked best with my embouchure and which mechanism felt best. I ended up with the Conservatory Aurumite with Venti cut headjoint.
Is there a certain name to what you did with your low notes at the 4:48 mark? They sound like very edgy I guess. I can do that but I'm the only flute that can. All the other flutes have a different tone.
+Oscat Hinojosa I call that my "laser beam" sound, haha! I noticed my flute teacher playing with that kind of sound when I was really young, so I spent a whole summer figuring it out for myself 😛 It works slightly differently for each flutist and each flute (as you can tell from all these reviews, haha!), but with patience and persistence, every flutist can figure it out!
JustAnotherFlutist so there's no specific name for it? I prefer "laser beam" more than what I used to do but no one else did it so felt weird. I also learned, but from you! So thank you.
Nah, there's no specific name for it. Every flutist describes it slightly differently, and for good reason: it actually sounds and feels different for every flutist!
I don't think I could play on a gold flute as my main flute. Especially as a blues player, I just prefer more projection to More quality of sound. So even if I could afford a gold flute, I doubt I would want it. It sounds great for baroque and romantic music. However when it comes to jazz, blues, and maybe even classical music, it just doesn't seem to project enough for me.
Isaac Keller, Jean Pierre Rampal played a gold flute in all of his Bolling recordings so I’m thinking it would work just fine in jazz. Also the Aurumite is silver on the inside and gold in the outside so it has characteristics of both metal types. You should try it! I never thought of myself as a gold flute player before either.
I own a Powell 9k Aurumite flute, but it's annoying to have to describe what Aurumite. With the 9k, the rose gold is on the outside, so people thing it's just plating. Oh well. I wish Powell would make a RU-vid video about how Aurumite is made..well not made, but the composition. I need a good way to visualize it.
I want to invest in nice flutes like thisBut im scared ill stop liking flute one day.I dont even know if i wanna pursue music after high school And i suck too! rip
