Something else to make note of: the second number in the model number also dictates whether or not the flutes have split e mechanisms as well. 1 indicates a closed hole flute with split e (ie 212, 312, 517, 617, etc.). 7 is an open hole model with split e (372, 472, 577, 677, etc.).

Played a 677 today and it was amazing! I guess I sorta knew that I was always a Yamaha girl but I just had to be shown again. It's never about the brand of the flute itself, it's about what fits your playing style and what works better for you. And with so many options, all instrumental players really have options galore :) (the world is thy oyster lol)

I play a 577 for 18 month now. Bought it after carefull trial cause it fitted my playing style well. With the bit of perspective now, I can say that a distinctive quality is the ease of playing pianissimo on this flute, even in the upper register. High notes come out easily, but I was initially principally appealed by the response in the lower register, where you have a lot of control even playing loud. I agree with the remark that pressure against the chin should be as light as possible. In short, I think the "Am" headjoint is very well designed, and will bring you very far without feeling the need for a custom handmade headjoint.

I feel like skipping the 472 and going straight to the 677 after I master my 222. I need something that I can grow into for the next 20 years after I get 3 more years out of the 222. If I had deep pockets though I'd probably step up to an intermediate flute though for the short term then go to a professional flute. Its just easier to put more money into a better flute that you can eventually adapt and grow into. The 677 would give me a challenge especially with the deep wall, open holes, B-Foot pretty much a more advanced version of an intermediate flute but at the professional level. More bells and whistles.

I have been playing the flute for more years then i can recall. I have never thought or reflected on my column of air, the spin of air or the differences in where the air moves between different instruments. I am not certain it would make any difference in my playing. It is interesting that you are acutely aware of these factors.

Hi Joanna :) I love watching the FCNY videos because I'm still very new to the flute and it's helpful for me to see your embouchure up close, so thanks haha. I have a few questions though. Is there any difference with an in-line/off-set G key besides reach for the player? Would you ever consider reviewing more student models or lower spectrum intermediate models (Like the Yamaha 300 series)?

Hmm, Joanna, I think it'd be really interesting if you reviewed beginner flutes more. Idk like maybe a Yamaha 222 which is the one i have. I also wanna see how its like and the sound difference if you played a beginner flute like the Yamaha 222 then a higher level flute like the 777 right after. I know you did do a review comparing a Jupiter 507S but if it's not too much of a waste of time i think reviewing a beginner flute similar to the way you review these kinds of flutes would be cool lol(ya know, like going through dynamics and mechanism and tone color and embouchure stuff) Just a suggestion i guess. thanks for reading :D ALSO I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS THEY GIVE ME LIFE LMAO

I learn the same lesson: If you want to play a musical instrument, go for the highest price you can afford. Reasons? Better tone, better timbre, easier to play as compared to cheaper instruments. I suffered so much as student with a cheap instrument which was hard to play well and high notes were unstable all because the music shop assistant persuaded my parents (I was a teen then) to buy the cheapest instrument. Parents could well afford the top of the line models, that's the irony.

I'm trying to get a new flute and I am debating between YFL-462H or YFL-362H. The only difference I see is YFL-462 is made out of sterling silver and YFL-362 is made out of nickel silver. Also, both of them had a gold plated lip plate, just regular model, and a student version with a C foot joint. I really want the gold plated models but I have no idea how the gold plated lip plate would make my playing better or maybe even worse...Which one should I choose?
@LaurelN1
@LaurelN1 6 лет назад
Which flute did you get? I’m getting the YFL-462. I love the rich sound of the solid silver over the silver plated. The keys are so springy and the flute is super easy to play in all octaves. Many professionals told me the gold plated lip plate made no difference in sound but was more for looks or if you have a silver allergy. I hope you are enjoying your flute. They are amazing.

@joshuaqueflander8178

I'd suggest also choosing the 677 because as I interpreted it, the 677 is a good mix of the 577 and the 777 because of the silver content, you'll have an even feel of power ad resistance, rather than too much of one side of the spectrum m

I am new to flute, and some of the expressions you use are a bit confusing; making matters more difficult is that I can't seem to find them explained elsewhere on the web. For example, when you say that air is "spinning" near the front of your mouth, are you literally saying that you have the physical sensation of that? If so, what does it mean in terms of how you play that particular flute when compared to a flute in which air "spins" further back in your mouth? Thanks in advance for any explanation you may provide. I really enjoy your videos and tips. John
@H0ngK1t
@H0ngK1t 7 лет назад
John B I interpret "spinning" is the flow of air stream projected. As which part of the "spinning" would be the most resonance point that makes the flute "sing". ☺️
