POWELL RIVER - The Town of Powell River is upset after learning it will be without its only ferry terminal for two months to start next year.
BC Ferries has decided to go through with a plan to upgrade the Westview Terminal in Powell River along with the Little River terminal in Comox. The route than runs between the two terminals is 80 minutes and the only way people in Powell River can access Vancouver Island.
Many in Powell River feel already isolated as it is, and say many count on the Comox Valley for medical reasons. Local businesses also use the route to receive and send goods.
BC Ferries says it will run a substitute ferry from Saltery Bay to Departure Bay in Nanaimo. But the crossing time for that run is anticipated to be three hours. If you add driving time, a round trip to the Comox Valley from Powell River will be more than 10 hours for those two months.
BC Ferries is looking into offering flights between the two towns as an emergency alternative. They are also hosting three open houses in February to discuss possible ideas and other solutions to the plan.
