Welcome to the Carter Wilson Workshop with Bradley Boggs.
In a couple of earlier videos, I jumped into power carving without knowing a whole lot, and bought a lot of different wheels and tools to try out. In an attempt to share what I've learned about them, I've put together a video series discussing them.
More information will be listed in my website article: carterwilsonworkshop.weebly.co...
You can find me on instagram: @bradleyboggs
You can keep up with me on Facebook: carterwilsonworkshop
In this video series I cover the following:
Harbor Freight 22 Tooth Carving Disc (like King Arthur's Tools Lancelot)
Kwik Tool Bad Blade Carver
Arbortech TurboPlane
King Arthur's Tools Holey Galahad Flat (Medium)
King Arthur's Tools Holey Galahad Round (Fine)
Harbor Freight Carbide Cup Wheel
Harbor Freight Backing Pad & Resin Fiber Sanding Disc
Bosch Variable Speed Grinder
Dewalt Grinder
Milwaukee Grinder
Festool RAS115
Festool RO90

The chainsaw and circular saw like blades seem perfect for removing wood from the framing of a structure so you can fit plumbing, electrical, HVAC in situations where the multitool and sawzall is no good. You know when you wanna just plunge out a void for the thing to fit.

I can see a couple of applications in construction that you missed but no biggie. you have a good video and I will be watching the others. I can see from this first video I am going to have to get the chainsaw blade, the arbortec blade, and the tungsten grinding blades. I will get a lot of use out of all of them. Much more than I ever imagined. I can just see my dad, who has called me "a walking accident looking for a place to happen" when he sees these in my tool box. He will be thrilled as when he found out my daily 9-5 was jumping out of planes and helicopters with automatic weapons in warm and fuzzy places. This will be fun.

I have the harbor freight chain saw wheel and am a little concerned about the bottom mounting washer on my grinder. My washer has a raised center section for the 7/8 “ wheel . Looks like to me a flat washer would be better. Any thoughts. I have not seen exactly how this wheel is mounted .
@mikeyandalyssab4782
@mikeyandalyssab4782 4 года назад
Hey Knot, it locks down fine on most grinders. For locking it down, if your grinder has the two washers, the washer on the outside usually has one side that is flat and the other that has a raised lip at the center. For these attachments, you need to have that raised lip facing out. The flat part needs to be pressed against this attachment or else it will spin loose. Sorry if that is confusing, but once you get one then you'll understand. Also, I've been using these attachments for a few years and am trying to avoid using them as much as possible. They are hard to control and VERY dangerous. I've seen a LOT of severe finger injuries from this as the blade loves to grab and jump while using.

Thank you for the review. I am planning to build a wooden rocking horse from plans I purchased from the rocking horse shop in the UK. It looks like the arbortech shaper is the best one to use. Its so expensive, is there an equivalent tool that is a bit more cost effective? I will buy the arbortech, bit man it hurts!
@BradleyMakesThings
@BradleyMakesThings 4 года назад
The arbortech is a great tool! That being said, you can still achieve that work with other tools. The abrasive style wheels like the King Arthur Tools Holey Gallahad I showed, as well as similar ones from Kutzall and Saburrtooth) will certainly get the job done at a lower price point, and aren’t bad tools to have in the arsenal!

Bradley! I feel bad mate, I've been calling you Carter all this time. Anyway, really interesting video. I don't want to go into the safety debate, RU-vid's not the place for that, but I have read a lot about NOT using a chainsaw blade on a grinder, that it's a real hazard. Have you had any issue using it? I had a kick back scare using a metal cut off disc a week ago so I'm a bit nervous around grinders now
@BradleyMakesThings
@BradleyMakesThings 8 лет назад
No worries, Robin! That's what I get for naming my channel after someone else. And you're not the only one. Got used to it haha. As for the chainsaw wheel, it's designed for a grinder but it's definitely dangerous. Don't think I'll be using it much. The first time I spun it up I just turned on the grinder for a second and I'm glad, because it wasn't mounted right. The Arbortech is much safer, leaves a better surface and is made in Australia! It's just a lot more expensive. Grinders in general are a pretty dangerous tool though. I've had a few cutoff wheels shatter on me and it's no fun. I always wear safety glasses and often a full face shield when using a grinder.

Bradley, do you have an opinion on the Harbour Freight grinder.? It's $15 on sale! I would use it for light duty - roughing out carved eagles wings, etc. I wonder if it can handle a power career attachment though? Have you tried it? Thanks.
@BradleyMakesThings
@BradleyMakesThings 7 лет назад
William Brown I've heard the heavy duty model is better than the regular one, but I've actually heard of folks getting a decent amount of life out of them. As long as you're realistic about a possibly short life span and aren't sure if you're going to do a lot with a grinder, I'd say go for it! Keep your receipt and if it dies you can return or exchange it.

@BradleyMakesThings
@BradleyMakesThings 6 лет назад
Do you have the gold diamond grit disc or the sanding discs? The sanding discs and flap discs will do that. The grinding one probably wouldn’t unless perhaps you’re pressing down really hard.

That’s odd. Are you trying to use it really flat? That could be the issue. If not, I’m not quite sure. I didn’t use that wheel a huge amount but dont recall there being much if any burning.

Do you not hold your work piece in a vise or with bench dogs while you’re carving it?
@BradleyMakesThings
@BradleyMakesThings 5 лет назад
At the time of this video, I was either clamping the piece down with quick clamp, or adhering the piece down to the stand with double-sided carpet tape. Still do that occasionally but I have a clamping vise now like many others do. Mine’s a ridgid, but it’s similar to or the same as the Triton Super Jaws or Rockwell Jawhorse. Probably will use all 3 methods still depending on the project. Eventually I’d like to build something custom that uses wooden dogs though.
@censusgary
@censusgary 5 лет назад
Thank you for answering quickly! Yeah, I like wooden dogs, but clamps will work if you don’t have them. I don’t know whether to trust double-sided tape.
@BradleyMakesThings
@BradleyMakesThings 5 лет назад
For me the double-sided carpet tape actually worked pretty well - but the two mating surfaces (stand/table and workpiece) both need to be really flat for good contact surface, and dust free (just while adhering before beginning work). Also need to be big enough, haha. I like the idea of wood dogs over metal clamping just for safety in case the grinder slips.

So this is a problem, when guys that don't know what the hell they are talking about try to teach others, they promote tools no one uses, that are dangerous and leave out tools that we do use. Professional carvers call the chainsaw disk the wheel of death. They are for idiots who like to go to he emergency room. The turbo plain is a good tool but its a plain not a mass removal tool.We use a chainsaw for mass removal because it is the safest and fastest method. Let carvers teach carving and toss out that chainsaw disk before you disembowel yourself.
@BradleyMakesThings
@BradleyMakesThings 4 года назад
Agreed - if you actually paid attention to the video you’d see that I said I didn’t really care for the chainsaw wheel because of safety concerns and that I don’t really use it. Also, chainsaws are great for large pieces but impractical for some smaller bowls and art pieces, even with a small carving bar. Thanks for making assumptions about my skill level though, Robert. I’m glad you got your daily feeling of importance here. :)
@BradleyMakesThings
@BradleyMakesThings 4 года назад
As a side note, it’s probably a bad idea to say “leaving the carving teaching to the carvers” and yet you don’t have any videos sharing your apparently profound carving wisdom with the world.
@r.a.m.customwoodpresentsma1959
@r.a.m.customwoodpresentsma1959 4 года назад
You do bowls and mentioned another carving you did, I took that to be your level of expertise. Hollowing out bowls is not carving....it's hollowing out bowels. If you felt the chainsaw disk was dangerous, why not severely warn others, we do. I carve for a living. I am not a RU-vid wannabe. So nope I don't have any RU-vid videos. If you want to see my art, I am Man Cave Creations Canada on face book, or search my name, as my personal page is all art . As for feeling important... why else would someone who cant carve, get on line and demonstrate tools, he barely understands.
