Welcome to show me cables. Today we’re going to be taking a look at power connectors.
The type of connections we’ll be going over are the IEC and NEMA standard connectors frequently found in data centers, offices, and home usage.
Let’s start with the IEC connectors.
IEC connectors refer to their connections as either an Outlet or an Inlet compared to the standard Male/Female or Plug/Jack.
It also uses a number system, in which the odd numbers are Outlets and the even numbers are Inlets.
For instance, the C5 connector is an outlet and the C6 is the same form factor, but is an Inlet.
C5 and C6 can commonly be found on laptop power supplies, portable projectors, and some desktop computers.
C7 and C8 can commonly be found on battery chargers, power supplies, video game consoles and some A/V equipment. These connectors are available in both a polarized and non-polarized version. The key difference being that the polarized connector will have one side squared off.
C13 and C14 can commonly be found on desktop computers, monitors, amplifiers, and printers.
C15 and C16 can be found on appliances that generate a lot of heat. It has a similar form factor to the C13/14 but with a small notch underneath the ground. They also feature a higher temperature rating, making them ideal for higher draw equipment.
C19 and C20 can be found on high power workstations and servers, power supplies, large network routers and power units.
Now let’s take a look at the NEMA connectors
1-15 are the 2 pronged power connections found in many older wall outlets that have not been grounded.
5-15 are the 3 pronged power connections found on wall outlets that have been grounded.
5-20 Are similarly formed to the 5-15 but with an additional horizontal blade and are rated for slightly higher amperage.

@@stevejohnson1321 That can't be as they are also used in the EU. Without downloading IEC 60320 i'd guess at least up to C16 the insulation level is 1000 V as they are used for 240/400 V systems. Allowed amps are on the wikipedia page. That info could be added with an overlay without reuploading the video.

You should have mentioned that a C15 cable fits in a C14 device, but C13 cable doesn't fit in a C16 device. This allows cables rated for high temperatures to be used with many devices, but high-temperature devices won't accept cables not rated for it.

Hi, im trying to find a specific connector for a launch sega saturn, its similar to the universal power cables however it is not slotted, it is however polarized. Example, if the non polarized example of what im looking for looks like a 0 instead of an 8 then the one im looking for would be shaped like a horizontally stretched D. Any advice?

I many power adapters and I understand the power cord connections into the "block" or converter. What I am having issues with are the varied connectors into the devices. You have connectors for Dell laptops, Toshiba and so on. There are even a couple I have that the device connector is approximately 5/8" OD, with three pin inside. Similar to the connector for a Ford Mustang. So can you help with understanding what all these device connectors go to? Thank you.

They all have different faces but do the same thing right? I.e they all just deliver the AC power from the wall socket? I have a table fan with a long cable and am researching the possibility of cutting it amid and reconnecting the two ends with C7 and C8 instead so that the C7/C8 can go thru small holes on a cabinet door. Is it doable? Or is there other better options? I’m surprised no one really talk about it on the internet 🤔

Why do C13/C14 in computers and power bricks often come loose so easily? They wiggle like if the receptacle doesn't have completely straight sides. I need to shove the plug in with force and hope it sticks and I won't need to touch it to dust it off.

You can get adapters that take have a 5-15R on one side and a 1-15P along with a ground lead on the other. You plug in the 1-15P to your 1-15R and then screw the ground lead into the box, usually through the screw in the center of the faceplate. Make sure to use an unpainted screw, and double check the box is grounded. If the box isn't grounded, hoo boy. You should probably rewire.

Why are your NEMA connectors upside down?
@pleappleappleap
@pleappleappleap 4 года назад
I won't speak for them, but I've found it's better to have the ground pin facing upward. Why? Because if the plug is only in half way and something falls into the gap, it is better that the offending item touches the ground and doesn't short the live to the neutral. That's bad news.

It's actually because of intelligence they invented these plugs. These standards are made from their previous iterations. There will be newer and newer standards after they found some problems or specific needs to be addressed.

@@dputra You are confusing intelligence with cleverness. Humans are clever and invent many things, some good, some atrocious. Other animals are far more intelligent since they do not breed way out of the numbers their environment can support; they do not routinely pollute their living space, and they do not destroy the biodiversity of the planet - only humans do that.
