Alzheimer's is absolutely the last thing you'd want. I took care of my mom for the last ten years of her life. She got to the very last stage of Alzheimer's. They even forget how to swallow. What a great talk! He makes it very simple, to summarize do these for reducing risk of Alzheimer's and increase well being: 1. Eat colorful fruits and veggies daily: blueberries, grapes, broccoli etc for better memory. 2. Take Vitamin E to eliminate free radicals from brain but not just from pills but from foods like nuts / seeds (just a few), spinach, mangoes etc. 3. Reduce trans-fat from foods like donuts, pastries; and saturated fats like from Bacon, meat, cheese/dairy. 4. Reduce metals like iron, copper. Do not use iron skillets etc. 4. Exercise: nothing crazy, just do brisk walk three times a week, up to 40 minutes each time. Do all of the above and one can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's by 80% even if you have the gene.

@@Mercymurv "believed to be'" doesn't prove anything. I haven't read anything about a connection between eating animal products and dementia. I would have to see the nature of the proof. I'm sure that it is extremely thin! There is a 2013 video on youtube in which Dr. Greger says that vegans/vegetarians have 3 times the Alzheimer's of meat eaters as well as the same rates of heart disease and cancer. The Alzheimer's makes sense, because so many vegs are deficient in B12, as are older people. I eat little meat and lots of vegetables, but regard a vegan way of eating to be high risk and I supplement with B vitamins, including B12. Since Alzheimer's has been referred to as type 3 diabetes, I think it more likely that it is a high carb, high sugar diet that is likely to be the key causative factor.

emotion is not scientific and is used by the snake oil merchant in selling their wears. The emotion is to sell a story regardless if it has any merit or is just BS. At around 6:40 in the video he talks about Iron and copper in the brain and talks about a rusting fry pan. this is absolute crap. we have many minerals (metals) in our body and of course they are in an oxidized form. Iron makes up the majority of our blood as being the major component of Hemoglobin. without it we will not be able to transport oxygen to the cells or brain. once you have to revert to emotion and distortions, any truth if it exists, is lost. entertaining yes, accurate not really. there is an agenda in Dr Barnard's talks and they all revolve around a vegan or no meat diet. it would be interesting to find out if there are any pecuniary interests at play.

I can relate. My mum passed away last March after 16 years of Alzheimer’s. Five year as a complete vegetable. She was diagnosed at 66, quite young actually. I was 34, too young to loose your mum, too young to parent a parent. All the women in her family died of the same illness. I became vegetarian (almost vegan) years ago, just by chance, then started running, cycling long distance. Again by chance. I didn’t know I was fighting my genes (and the fear, a paralyzing fear sometimes!!!) that way. I’ll keep eating a plant-food diet and exercise daily. Keep learning new things (my job helps luckily). I also stopped drinking alcohol and started meditating. Women in my family had bad genes, yes, but they never changed their lifestyle. I have. This is my personal bet I can fight my genes. I am fortunate enough to have access to this content as my English is near native levels. But many Italians can’t and I think they’re missing a lot of vital information. Thank you for your researches and for sharing. You and other like you (dr. Greger eg) can really change the life of people worldwide. Thank you, Dr Neal Barnard. I wish my mother knew what you've just taught. She would not have suffered from Alzheimer's. It brought such agony to both my mother and her family that I wish no one in this world would ever have that awful illness. When my mother passed away I had no more tears to weep for her; I only had only tears of joy that, at last, she was free from her immense suffering. I miss her, but not her agony. My dad has lost 50lbs and was able to cut his meds in half, I’m 35lbs down and have twice as much energy and stamina and my crazy heartburn that I struggled with for years went away in a couple weeks.. and I’ve only been on this diet for 5 months! I suffered from sever attention deficit all my life. As a child I used to think I was just not as smart as the other kids. Over the years I learned to cope with my ADD. Finally in my late 40's when it started affecting my work, I decided to go on medication. Fast forward a couple of years I heard about the Keto Diet and Intermittent Fasting. I decided to give that a try to lose some weight and surprisingly I noticed a change in my focus and clarity. I was all of sudden have bursts of super focus and my mind was not wandering. I have been on the Keto diet for now 6 months and have no trouble focusing. I am not medical expert but I love the new found focus, I have lost 35 pounds. I am also a long distance runner, before Keto I would carb load before a race like a half marathon, now I run a half marathon without putting an ounce of carb in me. So though I don't claim to be an expert, I love the positive changes that Keto and Intermittent Fasting has made in my life. Just my two cents !!!

In my experience (just based off observation), I feel that movement and using your brain, whether its reading, writing, building things, or anything that causes you do have to figure something out, is the best thing you can do above diet. NOW, I know that diet makes a difference. I am just basing this off the people that are old 70+ and still cognitively sharp. I had the same experience with my dad that he did. My dad was only 62 when he died of Alzheimer's (top 10% for how young he was). He was always on the lazier side. Looking back after he already got really bad, I realized that he wasn't just lazy when it came to doing chores around the house but anything that required him to critically think like reading instructions, or having to figure something out, he'd generally shy away from or take the easiest route possible. He used to be horrible at cleaning up around the house, always wanted people to do stuff for him and wasn't that organized of a person outside of his interests like music (guitars, amps etc) and anything to do with his motorcycle. I started observing a lot of people that are 70+ that are mentally sharp and realize they are always doing things for themselves. Still cutting their own grass, taking care of the garden, grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning, etc... A lot of those people I am referring to still eat meat, dairy, pastries etc. Now I'm sure there's more to it and genes play a roll as well but I do not feel like those people have particularly great diets but they all are hard workers and always want to do things themselves. That's just what I have observed. Anyone else have thoughts on this?

Those are very valid points. I'm no psychologist/psychiatrist but I wanted to point out that your dad had classic symptoms of undiagnosed ADHD. Even though this is my second time watching this I feel as if I am learning even more. It doesn't hurt to watch things twice when they can help you live your best life as this program does. Really enjoy the way he is so down to earth and not condescending or preachy!!!! I think I will have to check and see if he does any more talks!

One of the best, most empowering talks on health and the impact we can have through the simple choices we make at the grocery store … thank you so much for sharing, because the government doesn’t profit from doing so, and we have to rely on remarkable individuals such as you to spread the word.

Now what I would like to do is to go back in time, and I want to sit down with my dad, and I want to say, “Dad, I found out something really important. We can change our diet, we don’t really need that cheese and that bacon. There’s plenty of healthy things that we can eat. Let’s bring in the colorful vegetables and fruits, let’s make them part of our everyday fair. Let’s lace up our sneakers, let’s exercise together.” It’s too late for him. But it’s not too late for you. It’s not too late for me either, and if we take advantage of what we have now learned about how we can protect our brain, then perhaps, families will be able to stay together a little bit longer.

He is my hero Dr Neil n I watch/ listen to him daily just to remind myself to eat colourful fruits and vegetables 🥦 plus exercises ( n just one piece of steamed salmon a day my own choice n no meat.) I am 88 and very active visiting friends/ people in care homes and hospitals 2-3 times a week. I don’t drive and take public transport daily. I am told I have no wrinkles (maybe they need glasses) I cycle 3000 pedals on a mini cycle machine daily and it takes 40 minutes . I used to walk one hour in the morning and the same in the afternoon. I don’t have a TV but I watch TEDx a lot especially subjects about improving the brain and the heart as I have a pace maker. I have been playing 2 games of 10 pin bowls each week with a friend for over a year and the highlight of the week. I thank Dr Neil for all the above………eating well.

I've been chopping 2-3 cloves of RAW garlic everyday for the last 2 years. My Blood Pressure prior, was around 138 or 92. After a couple of months my blood pressure went down to 111 or 70. Also since taking it I haven't gotten any sicknesses such as the flu or a cold. I give a spoon full of RAW chopped garlic to my wife and two children atleast 4 times a week. They went for a visit to the Philippines with a bunch of family members. Once they arrived in the Philippines everybody in the group got food poisoning except my family; I read that Raw Garlic kills the bacteria from the degraded food in the stomach, stopping you from getting sick. After that incident all of my extended family members have started eating Raw Garlic weekly. If you rub a sliced piece of garlic onto acne, in a few days it will dry up and disappear. I had a tooth cavity and rubbed garlic on it and the pain went away. If you rub sliced garlic onto your mouth gums it will eliminate gingivitis without medication. One other major benefit of eating RAW Uncooked Garlic is mosquitoes won't bite you. The mosquitoes smell the garlic in on your skin and are repulsed by the smell and taste, I'm speaking from experience. The list of benefits from garlic goes on and on. WHAT TO DO: Chop up 2-3 cloves of RAW Garlic on a plate, let it sit for 15 minutes so the chemicals in the garlic mix ( the chemical mixing is the secret ). Then take a spoon and swallow the RAW Garlic with a spoon and a glass of water ( don't chew it or you'll have horrendous breath ). Do this 4-5 days a week and you'll immediately start seeing the Health benefits. Remember for acne elimination you have to apply it externally. God Bless.

Please don't take this nonsensical comment as actual health advice. Get an opinion from your doctors. If you doubt the first, get a second from a different doctor, and so on.

My Grandma who died at the age of 104 years, had incredible memory till the last week of her death. She literary had no reason or cause for death. All her organs were still fine and were functioning to the required extent for the age. She unfortunately had a stomach ache for 3 days, she stopped eating suddenly and happened to be hospitalized and died in hospital. Until then, she was never hospitalized for any health issues to my knowledge. Her skin was glowing and she could read and write, even at that age. I have never seen her complain about anything expect for some fatigue and some hearing problem since 2 months before her death. She is vegetarian to the core. Had her coffee even till last days. Ate neat clean homemade food only (till her last day at home). Her lifestyle was so perfect. Even till the last week, she used to wake up at 5AM in the morning, goto bed at 9.30PM. I'm 35 YO now and have only seen her having the same disciplined routine, like a machine in her life. I have big time learned from her, that life style and food habits are the important factors that determine the quality of life.

Thank you for an eye-opening presentation. Unfortunately I have had three strokes one in 2016 that I was hospitalized for five days I walked out and luckily didn’t have any major deficits. In 2017 I had another not realizing I even had one and was diagnosed later by an MRI in 2018. My most recent March 2022 which was quite large on the right side of my brain I was in the hospital for two days again walking out with no major deficits. My fear and anxiety has kicked in big-time because I am trying to figure out what to do to prevent a future stroke from happening. Statistically it says usually after your first one he would get a second one within five years. That did happen it was only one year apart but now it has been 4 to 5 years since my last one. This right one is quite large but they said it was about 5 1/2 inches big. I notice certain things about how I might say something my family picks up on some of the inconsistencies that I may have. This was an amazing talk I will definitely start to implement the color wheel as I Call it but if anybody has any helpful information or suggestions please reach out to me I cannot walk due to lower back problems so I use a recumbent bike and I am up to one hour a day at level two for half of the time and just yesterday went up to level three. Again thank you and I am deeply sorry for your loss.
