The documentary "Power" tackles the complicated subject of policing in America in a way that's clear-eyed and concise, yet increasingly infuriating. Director Yance Ford, who was nominated for an Oscar for his 2017 documentary "Strong Island," gets his arms around a massive issue efficiently and persuasively. This may sound like an eat-your-vegetables movie, but it's sure to inspire conversation and debate afterward. Streaming now on Netflix.

A terribly important work like this pairs well with Ava Duvarnay’s ‘13th’ Netflix documentary about the continuation of legal slavery as a form of punishment for crime and the capitalistic, prison industrial complex under the 13th amendment.

I think it’s hysterical that this movie is already getting review bombed on IMDB. It already has a 5.7 average score, with the 1 star ratings just about tripling the next highest review score. Easily saw that coming.

Being a former detective I sadly must agree with pretty much everything you said. In part we were the Frankensteins that created the monsters who are now out to get us. It’s way bigger than we think. Many of us believed we were doing good, most didn’t know the why

I haven't seen the doc nor did I know it was coming out until this review which is just another reminder how great Netflix is about advertising their movies and shows. That said I am guessing from the review this might more or less explain why cops have the right to pretty much do anything o you including shoot you, which might be at least interesting to know.

I'll definitely check this out. I'm glad it's only 90 minutes. That's a length that is digestible for people who might disagree with the subject matter. A 5 part miniseries of hour-long episodes might attract only the proverbial choir.

I just finished the documentary. All though there was more than few things to think about, most of stuff was cherrypicking and gaslighting. Just because there were segment where Obama and Joe supported to budget up police, doesn’t mean that the documentary wasn’t political - Well I may be slightly wrong about that, so if not political definitely ideological.

Your thoughtful discussion about "Power" inspired me to see it right away, This film should widely seen to help us all understand the scope and origin of these issues. This is the most insightful look into this issue that I have ever seen. Thank you both for your reviews.

Every citizen can purchase a gun. Police have to operate in that environment. We have created a problem, that seems impossible to solve.... Maybe, lessons on how to interact with police, for everyone.

It is weird. I absolutely am frightened of your everyday police officer even though I know many of them are trying to be moral arbiters of law and order but, again, I don't trust them. Too many of them are, well, psychos with a power trip. That being said I appreciate detectives a lot. They are the ones in the trenches solving cold cases. They are the ones that stand with the women who have been raped, the shop keepers who have been shot in the face. They are the ones who truly mend our society (assuming they are being just). So I have a split and I don't know how we do not have police. It is complicated. Anyway, I look forward to seeing this Documentary based on your discussion. You guys always rock.

The film lots its credibility when it falsified history to fit its agenda. No, policing did not “originate as slave patrols”. Continuing to repeat that claim doesn’t magically make it true. The concept of modern policing didn’t even originate in the United States. While it is true that Boston Police was the first true professional police force in the US, it was modeled after the London Police in the UK, which was already established prior. The concept of modern policing goes back to Paris France in 1666 when the first modern policing system was established by King Louis. Yes there are problems in policing but spreading false information doesn’t do anyone any good. No matter how good your cause is.

Over- analyzing doc that tells a story that is only partly true. It’s hard to take their claims of racism when the obvious Generalizing and stereotyping police dept’s is rampant in this film. The problem of Plolice corruption and ineptitude will never be solved with these chicken little doc’s. Criminals are not victims. They’re just Criminals and the Police as a whole are not all criminals

I watched this documentary because I know that policing has its problems. The film was absolutely terrible. Seriously, it looked like it was made by an amateur RU-vidr. First off the film makes very cheesy attempts to trigger the viewers emotions and fears by showing gloomy, black and white footage of nazi soldiers marching, nuclear explosions, mixed in with cherry picked footage of police conducting crowd control. The film is also very one sided and while it does point out real problems, it fails to offer solutions. This is a textbook example of political propaganda under the guise of a “documentary”.

This is a textbook example of political propaganda under the guise of a “documentary”. Another example of not understand what documentaries are for. ALL documentaries have a point of view. All of them have a slant. This is not a news report or a "debate" program.
@jollyroger6135

@@nikosvaultthere is a huge difference between “sharing a point of view” and falsifying history and using cherry picked facts to support an agenda. This film doesn’t even try to hide it.

This movie was complete trash. Folks it’s really really easy. Act right. Be respectful. Mind your own business. You won’t even know the police are there. Don’t wanna listen? Wanna act like a fool? Then you won’t like the police. Common sense people. Use it.

Thanks for the recommendation. Sadly, my first thought is what is the alternative? Currently, there is no political will to reform the police force. Just very sad to see the state of affairs we are in🥲

I'm at the point in my life where I don't believe that police officers will stop disproportionately killing unarmed black people or disproportionately killing unarmed minorities in general. I just demand as a tax paying citizen that when it happens, that real accountability is afforded. According to a 2023 mapping police violence report, that isn't the case. 1,247 people were killed by police. The most in a decade. Of those killings, 96% were shootings. Officers were charged with a crime in only ten of these cases. Which amounts to 1% of all killings by police.

"If that's something you don't feel day to day basis, your part of that group that the police state is there to protect" Wouldn't one of those groups would be law abiding? Not being facetious. And I don't agree because you're are always suspected of being up to no good, you may as well be up to no good. And some things being painted as insidious like about the military man shot opening his door with a gun in his hand. That was pure incompetence by the police mixed with fear and poor training. However I still see how messed up the state of the police is and have no doubt ( and have seen it first hand ) how corruption/ prejudices are rife. And I hate bullies and abuse of power. I don't know what the answer is to fix it but having no police is not it. Sorry about the waffle, it's early here lol. Edit: also guns are a problem. Police having them and citizens potentially having them. The amount of videos I have seen compared with to say the U.K, that would have resulted in a taser being deployed and not a gun is astounding.
